I’m the eldest of three children, and while my younger siblings and I are no longer living with our parents, I can’t help but be a bit envious of the childhood they’re getting and have had. The childhood I got was one no one should have.

My mother ran off when I was only three years old, after which my father took to drinking. It took a while before anyone found out about anything that went on. But to be delicate, my father wasn’t exactly a sleepy or happy drunk. He was more of a blame-everything-on-me kind of drunk. So growing up wasn’t at all pleasant for me. He’d been abusive not with just words and continuously telling me that my mother only left because of me, but also took to hitting it into me, and neglected me when he was sober. The only times he talked, well yelled, at me was when he was drunk or drinking.

The only place I ever felt safe was at school in the music room. Music became a huge part of me, a way to express my sorrow and pain, at least when people weren’t around. I had been able to sing all I wanted and get it all out to help me face the nightmares that waited for me at home.

Sometime after I turned fourteen my Aunt Subin walked in on my father slapping me across the face, things pretty much changed right after that. She took me away, reported her brother-in-law and took me in. My aunt, my mother’s sister and twin, apologized to me over and over for not helping me sooner, to which I just told her it was alright. A few months later she married her boyfriend, Sunghoon, who is a music teacher as it would happen.

As for my younger siblings, they are twins. My mother apparently left to protect them from him, but hadn’t been able to take me. In the eleven years apart from her she’d been raising them, leaving me behind. My mother died on her way to pick me up from my aunt. So instead my aunt and uncle took my younger siblings and me in.

Even though years have gone by, and I’m now a rookie singer, I still can’t find it in me to really trust anyone of them, even if I’d been saved by my aunt, trained by my uncle, and have gotten to know my siblings, they’re still people who I’m deathly afraid of, after all it wasn’t a total stranger who hurt me, even though in a way my father had been a stranger, but he’d still been my father. And look at what he’d done to me.
