When SuperHero Dreams Are Crushed

The Cat God's Orders

The first thing Dongwoo made her do was make sure that she would not be bothered by other unrelated business, such as school, family, or friends. It was as if he didn’t even want to have a life beyond him and his business.

Myunghee didn’t know what to think about it. Luckily she had taken a year off of school after graduating from college and before she planned to go to graduate school.

But he also wanted her to tell her parents that during this time off, she was planning to travel, a sort of self-mediating trip for herself, a trip to “find herself”.

She thought it was ridiculous to call it that, but she wasn’t about to argue. He practically insisted. And she wasn’t about to retaliate with this cat that was closely related to something holy.

Her parents were skeptical at first, especially after her little ordeal earlier, but finally relented at the idea. They felt that perhaps the near-death experience caused her to reevaluate life and consider doing something as crazy as this, although they had considered that their daughter wasn’t quite right on the head. They told her to contact them if she needed any help.

She ended her call with her parents with a sigh. She looked at Dongwoo was lying on the couch next to her.

She had brought Dongwoo back to her apartment for he said that he was going to stick with her until she finished helping all six people.

Actually, cross that. Until she finished helping him help the six people.

She wondered how long that would be.

She continued to stare at the cat and finally spoke up. “I was wondering something.”

The cat lazily looked up at her with half-lidded eyes.

“You’re a god, right? So, why do you take an appearance of a cat? Wouldn’t it be easier if you had a human appearance?”

He blinked at her.

She frowned slightly, continuing musing over the thought. “Is it because you can only take on an appearance of cat in the human world?”

The cat tilted his head. “Let’s just say that is the reason. Plus, there are some things that one can only do as a cat. And I like cats.”

“Still…”

“Are you really going to sit here and contemplate why I’m a cat instead of finding Kim Sunggyu?”

“Can’t you just let me rest for awhile? It’s been a long day. I just found out that a god saved me from dying. And instead of going on a self-reflective journey that I never wanted to go on, I’m supposed to be helping people.” She sighed and held out her arms which Dongwoo immediately jumped into. “But whatever, it’s life. Let’s meet Sunggyu.”

“You’re lucky this café allows cats,” Myunghee muttered under her breath to the white cat that was lounging on her lap as she mindlessly stoked his head. She picked up her tea and blew on it softly to cool it as she watched people walk past the window, trying to see if could pinpoint Sunggyu.

She looked down at the cat. “Are you really not going to tell me what it is I have to help Sunggyu with?” she asked as inconspicuously as she could while she glanced at the other customers.

He dragged his tail lazily from side to side and peeked at her with one eye. “Mmmm. No. I want to see what you can figure out what it is first.”

“You mean try and figure out why you wanted him to crash and die?” she whispered.

“That’s part of it. And he wasn’t going to die, excuse me very much.”

“You’re excused. And it would so much easier to go on about this if you would tell me,” she mumbled to herself.

The cat simply swished his tail back and forth.

“Excuse me, are you Kang Myunghee?”

She looked up at the sound of the voice to see a rather handsome older man. He looked about in his mid-twenties, rather young for a lawyer.

“Yes, I am. It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Kim,” she said with a smile as she gestured to the seat in front of her.

He smiled back and took the seat. “Please, call me Sunggyu. Mr. Kim is my father. And that’ll just make me feel old.”

He looked solemn right after he spoke, bowing his head in apology. “I’m sorry about almost hitting you. Is there a reason why you called me here today? Is there a problem? You didn’t really say on the phone.”

She shook her head. “Oh, no. I’m fine. I’m grateful that you paid for my hospital bills.” She hesitated, trying to think of what to say. “Erm, I guess I just wanted to make sure that you knew I was fine.”

He chuckled. “And the phone call wouldn’t suffice?”

She became flustered. “I… I guess I wanted to you to see in person.”

He gave her an odd look. “Are you trying to get more money from me?”

She waved her hands in protest. “No, no. I…I…”

Dongwoo jumped off her lap and onto the table, stealing both of their attentions.

Sunggyu narrowed his eyes at the white cat. He reached over and petted it softly. He looked at Myunghee and softly said, “Is that the cat that I almost ran over?”

Myunghee nodded.

Sunggyu nodded, looking interested, and reached over to his chin to scratch it. “I’m glad he’s fine.”

Myunghee nodded. “Um,” she started off.

Sunggyu looked up and tilted his head. “Yes,”

“I guess the real reason why I asked you to meet is I was wondering if you needed help.”

“Help?” he asked confusedly, removing his hand from the cat.

He thought for a second. “Are you studying law? You want an internship or something like that?”

She waved a hand in denial. “Oh, no. I studied hospitality management.”

“Then is this for paying your bill? That was because I almost hit you; you shouldn’t feel like you should repay me.”

“No,” she denied again. “It’s that, um, you sounded sad on the phone, and I wanted to see if everything was okay!” she blurted out randomly.

Sunggyu looked surprised and from the corner of her eye, Myunghee swore she saw Dongwoo snort a little.

Sunggyu smiled sadly. “I sounded sad?”

“Um, yeah,” Myunghee slowly said.

“Hmm, I suppose it’s not so far from the truth,” he mumbled sadly as he stared out the window.

She looked down at Sunggyu’s intertwined hands, noticing that he had a sliver band around his left ring finger. “You’re married?”

He looked at her in surprise at the abrupt question. He followed her gaze to his finger and smiled softly. He spun the silver ring in a circle around his finger. “No, engaged.”

“Oh, congratulations,” Myunghee smiled.

“Yes, thank you.” Suddenly, a soft melody drifted into the air. Sunggyu pulled out his phone and looked at it. “Excuse me,” he whispered, getting up from his seat to take his call.

Myunghee watched him leave and then turned her attention to Dongwoo. Glances were passed from each other as she tried to interpret what he was trying to tell her, but she couldn’t read anything from his golden eyes.

“Sorry about that,” Sunggyu announced as he came back to the table. He pulled out his wallet as he said, “That was my fiancée; she wants to meet up soon. Let me pay for your drink.”

Myunghee shot a hand out in objection. “Don’t worry about it. I’m the only one who ordered it anyways.” She dropped her hand and smiled. “Thank you for meeting up with me.”

Sunggyu smiled back kindly. “I’m glad you’re fine after that incident. But I’m sorry, I don’t need help. Thank you for thinking that though.”

“No, thank you. I guess I just wanted to help out. And good luck with your wedding.”

Sunggyu looked momentarily surprised, but smiled sadly. “Yes, the wedding. Thank you.”

Myunghee watched Sunggyu leave and walk away to hail a taxi.

She exchanged glances with Dongwoo, paid, and left.

They were back at the park under the shadowed trees.

“It’s something about his wedding, right?” Myunghee asked straight-forwardly to Dongwoo.

“I’m surprised you caught on so fast.”

She shrugged. “He looked so lonely whenever he mentioned his fiancé or the wedding. But what about it? I don’t understand his problem. Is it because he doesn’t want to marry or because of the fiancée?” she trailed off, making it an open-ended question.

“Looks like you’ll have to meet up with him again, doesn’t it?” he said with a smirk in his voice.

Myunghee snorted. “Fine. By the way.”

Dongwoo looked up at her. “What do you eat?”

“What?”

She brought in her hands up to compliment her shrug. “I mean, you’re practically a cat. But then you’re also a god. So, do you eat what cats eat, or what ethereal beings eat? Do they even eat? Or do eat air?”

She saw the cocked eyebrow Dongwoo was giving her.

“I’m only asking you this because you are going to be staying with me for a while, and I don’t want you to starve.”

Dongwoo laughed. “You don’t need to worry about me. I’ll manage. If I do want something, I’ll simply just ask you. Is that fine?”

She frowned. “I would like if you would tell me beforehand. But I suppose it’s fine. Just don’t wake me up in the middle of the night to tell me to buy a bottle of milk.” She looked up in thought. “That reminds me, I need to buy food.” She looked at the cat. “After losing them just to save you.”

The cat grinned.

“You know, I do particularly like chicken. Especially chicken .”

“Don’t just stick your head out like that!” Myunghee hissed as she stuffed Dongwoo’s poking head back into her bag. “Pets aren’t allowed in supermarket.” She grabbed a packet of chicken and put in her basket.

“Humph, societies’ rules. Why must they be so arduous? And don’t you have a more comfortable bag?”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were planning on staying in my bag. If I would have known, of course I would have presented you with only the finest,” she muttered sarcastically. “You wouldn’t stay outside, so this is the only way. it up. We’re almost out,” Myunghee whispered as she lined up.

“I know! He’s such a good catch! You should have seen the ring he gave me.”

Myunghee looked at the woman in front of her. She had a glamorous aura with long luscious chestnut hair that flowed down her back. The black peacoat hugged her body and matched with the black suede boots. Sunglasses were perched on top of her head as she continued to talk on the phone.

“Mmmm. Mmmm. Yes, I’ll talk to you later,” the woman loudly cooed into the phone. She hung up and continued to admire the ring on her outstretched hand.

Myunghee glanced at the silver ring with interest. An engagement, she assumed. And a grand engagement ring it was. A large diamond was its centerpiece but it was also lined with smaller diamonds around it.

“Go talk to her.”

“What?” she hissed to the cat.

He popped his head out, blinking his orange eyes at her. “Talk to her. Or would you rather have me jump out and create a situation so you can talk to her?”

“Stop it!” Myunghee shouted, pushing Dongwoo’s head back into the bag. “Why do I have to?”

Unfortunately, her little outburst was heard by the others and she was returned with bewildered stares, including the woman in front of her.

Myunghee stepped a little closer to her. “Um, I couldn’t help but to notice your ring. It’s, er, nice, I mean pretty.”

The young woman immediately glowed and smiled. “Isn’t it? People today just don’t appreciate true beauty these days. Like this ring.” There was slight pause until she added, “And me,” with a giggle.

Myunghee blinked at her. “Oh. Kay,” she slowly said, elongating each syllable. “I...”

She was cut off by the other woman. “My fiancé gave it to me. It’s my engagement ring. Like, oh my gosh, isn’t it wonderful. I’m so glad I’m marrying him.”

“Uh, because, because you love him, right?” Myunghee stated, slightly flabbergasted by the woman’s talkative nature.

“Well, of course. But, you know, it doesn’t hurt that he’s a lawyer.”

“Oh, a lawyer. Hmm. That…that’s, erm, nice. Is he from a big firm?”

The woman looked at her in incredulity. “Only from the biggest. Gimsul Law Firms?”

Myunghee looked blankly at her; however, to her defense, it did sound oddly familiar.

The woman scoffed in disbelief. “You don’t know them?’

“Well, there are a lot of firms out there, so, you know, you can’t expect me to know all of them,” Myunghee tried to say.

“I can’t believe you don’t know them. Kim Gwido founded the firm and is only the top lawyer in this country! However, he is retired and oversees the firm. His grandson is rising to take his seat.”

“That’s nice,” Myunghee nodded, trying to seem interested. But she couldn’t help but to feel like the woman only cared about the name.

And just to be polite, she asked, “What’s the grandson’s name?”

The woman smiled, “Kim Sunggyu. He’s also my fiancé.”

“Please tell me that all of that was a coincidence. That you purposely didn’t tell me to go to that particular grocery store because somehow, somehow, you knew she would be in there? I knew it was too fancy for my own taste. I like modest things, you know.”

“It was a coincidence,” Dongwoo said with a bland tone.

“Ahhh, this was all on purpose,” Myunghee wailed, throwing her hands in the sky. “My whole life is a lie!”

Her cries were not unnoticed by several people walking by, giving her odd looks.

Dongwoo, happily out of the cramped bag, walked in front of her, throwing an annoyed look back at her. “Stop being overdramatic.”

Myunghee opened one eye to peek at him. “So, what now?” she asked, pulling her hands back in, along with her groceries. “I met the guy. I met the girl. They’re getting married. What’s wrong with that? Sure, the lady was a bit, uh…”

“Selfish? Conceited? Money lover?”

“I was going to say weird, but yeah, I guess that works too. And the guy seems nervous about the marriage. Second guessing himself, in my opinion, almost unsure about the whole thing. And the girl. Obviously liking the money, but I think she likes him too.”

“Right, we talked about that already. But impressive. It looks like you thought about it more.”

She rolled her eyes. “I might be a space-case at times, but it doesn’t mean I’m a fool.”

Dongwoo chuckled, “I’m surprised you know that about yourself.”

“That’s why I got friends, man.” She paused and shook her head. “Enough about me, let’s go back to Kim Sunggyu. I’m supposed to be helping him. So, I just met his fiancée. And that means that they’re getting married sometime soon. Probably. You know, I know a couple of my parents’ friends that waited years before they got married even though they got engaged. Do you think that’s like Kim Sunggyu and his fiancée?”

“Myunghee,” Dongwoo warned.

“Sorry. But let’s assume that they are getting married soon. The fiancée looks excited for the marriage, yet Kim Sunggyu doesn’t. So does that mean I’m supposed to help Sunggyu with his marriage? Make him feel like he’s making the right choice?”

She paused mid-step and gasped. She pointed at the cat, or rather shoved her fist that was carrying a bag of groceries, and exclaimed, “I know. Something’s bad going to happen to their marriage. And he knows about it. That’s why he’s so nervous. And we’re going to make sure it doesn’t. Save the marriage; save the world.”

She laughed. “I always wanted to be a superhero.”

Dongwoo snorted. “Actually, we’re going to stop the marriage.”

Myunghee sighed, dropping her hand of groceries, and walking after the white cat. “I’m never going to get to be a superhero.”
