Love Can Wait

Yerim looked at the box that was sitting peacefully on her table, not even a single touch has been laid on it after the jerk, Kim Jongdae threw it on the floor.

She didn’t know what to do with it anymore since her hard work wasn’t appreciated at all. She didn’t want to keep the scarf since she’ll just remember how Jongdae rejected her ‘thank you’ gift but she didn’t want to just throw it either since it was her hard work after all. She knitted it during her lunch breaks and free time and sometimes she would even stay up an all-nighter just to both continue the scarf and do her homework. She then decided to just give it to him again, this time, she’ll give it to him and tell him what she really wants to tell him.

She was now once again back in the senior hallway, walking with confidence this time, not that silly little shy junior girl handing out a confession letter anymore. She entered his classroom as if it was hers and the seniors in class quickly eyed her, wondering who she might be. Some glared at her for being rude since they probably recognize her as one from the lower classes. And some didn’t really mind her since they probably thought she was just from the other class.

But she didn’t really care whether the people were annoyed at her for entering the seniors’ class since she was too fixated on looking for her target, Kim Jongdae. She was actually thankful that Irene wasn’t in sight cause it would be embarrassing for her to tell Jongdae what she really wants to if someone from the class knows her.

Yerim quickly spotted Jongdae since he was pretty much alone at his seat, earphones plugged in both of his ears while reading a book. She walked towards him and placed the gift on his book causing him to look up. Yerim expected to see him glaring at her for being rude but instead he looked up with a questioning look writer all over his face. He removed his earphones from both of his ears and stared up at her.

“Can I help you?” He asked, not seeming to recognize her.

She was about to say something but no words came out from and she just simply stared at him. She couldn’t help but to be in trance of Jongdae’s looks. She couldn’t mutter a single word, it’s as if like time froze and it were just the two of them in that classroom.

“Umm.. hello?” He asked causing her to snap back into reality.

“I just came here to give you that.” Yerim tried to sound mean but she didn’t know whether it worked or not and pointed down at the small box.

Jongdae looked at the box on his table and opened it, he blinked as he saw the familiar red colored knitted scarf and a pair of matching gloves in the box. He looked up at her and saw her nametag, Park Yerim, he remembered this girl giving him the box a month ago and remembered that he threw that box because she was one of those rich people who flaunt their money. He grabbed the box to hand it back to her and before he could even speak, Yerim spoke up.

“You. Do you think that just because your classmates always make fun of you means that there are no good hearted people out there? That all people out there just want to make fun of you and laugh at you? Just because some rich person gave you something doesn’t mean that that person is implying something or is looking down on you or pities you. I don’t pity you. I just gave you a scarf and a pair of gloves in return of your kindness that day. I know you’re going to say that I should have just said ‘thank you’ and not give anything more but I really wanted to give you something because it was the first time that someone treated me nicely without ever asking for anything in return. I knew that you wouldn’t accept my gift if I bought it so I decided to make you a simple scarf that would give you warmth, just like the warmth that you have given me that day. I don’t care if you give it away or not wear it ever but if you dare throw that in front of my face again, I swear I don’t what to do anymore.” Yerim finished.

She looked at Jongdae to see whether he would say something or throw the box to the ground again or shout at her for being so disrespectful to someone who’s older but all he did was sit there, completely out of words to say.

“I guess I’m done here.” She mumbled to herself and turned around, she gulped down as she saw that a lot of the seniors in the class were staring at them, more likely staring at her. She breathed out and confidently walked out of the classroom. She barely managed to escape alive with all the stares that the seniors were giving her as she walked down the hallway, thankfully the bell rang signaling the start of class causing them to quickly disperse to their corresponding classrooms.

Yerim made her way to the washroom and hit herself on the head as she looked into the mirror.

“That was totally out of line! Stupid! He’s older than you! Why the hell did you speak informally! Aish jinja! I can’t believe you actually gave him a lecture! Where did you get that kind of confidence Park Yerim?” She asked herself as she looked at her reflection on the mirror.

Jongdae couldn’t focus during class. He tried focusing on what the teacher was saying but he couldn’t. All he could do was think about the girl who barged in to their classroom and throw a box down at him while giving him a lecture. It was the first time that someone has ever been rude to him. He didn’t even know this girl, the only time that they had an interaction was that time. He thought about it for some moment as to where he had seen this girl other than that time. He knew this girl wasn’t from the other class cause if she was then he should have seen this girl when both their class and other class have joint activities but no, he hasn’t seen this girl. He suddenly remembered seeing her at one of the juniors’ pep rally.

“So she is a junior? Just as I suspected.” He said to himself.

But the fact that she was a year younger than him didn’t struck him or the fact that she had just been rude to him. It was her words that struck him and he felt guilty for throwing her gift to him. “I must have been a real jerk to her.” Jongdae whispered and he had this urge to slap himself right now. He decided to talk to this girl later after class, to apologize for what he did.

He went to the junior hallway and looked at the classrooms, but nobody was around anymore. He sighed as he knew that she might have left already.

As he walked outside the school, he saw her sitting on the very same spot from the first time they met. He saw her growling and she kept on pressing her phone.

He went up to her and said hey. She didn’t look up and all she said was to leave her alone that she didn’t brought any money with her today.

“I’m not asking for any money. I just want to apologize for being rude to you that day.” Jongdae said causing her to quickly look up.

As she saw him, her eyes widened and she wanted to shoot herself or throw herself into a pit.

“Ah no.. You shouldn’t.. I should be the one that should apologize for being rude and disrespectful earlier.” She said as she shook her hands in front of him. She bowed and apologized to him.

When she looked up, something caught her eye, a red knitted scarf was wrapped around his neck. She couldn’t help but smile, she didn’t care if Jongdae was thinking that she might be crazy or something.

“Yerim sshi, I’m also sorry for being rude to you.” He said with a small apologetic smile. “And thank you for the gift, I love it.”

“I hope we can get along as friends Yerim sshi, I’m Jongdae by the way.” He said and put his hand out for her to shake. She shook it shyly and returned his small smile.

“So, aren’t you going home yet?” He asked.

“My butler is going to pick me up but he said he might arrive two hours late since he still has to go to my dad’s office to pick something up.” Yerim sighed sadly.

“Is your house near here? I can walk you home.” Jongdae volunteered.

“Ah, it’s okay. You don’t have to.” She said.

Jongdae insisted to walk her home so she had no choice but to just agree. To Yerim, it wasn’t surprisingly awkward. He made her feel comfortable while they were walking but it was mostly Jongdae who was talking and asking questions. Yerim thought that he was just being nice since he felt bad.

After that incident, Jongdae and Yerim would always talk to each other and hang around together.
