Prologue
1897, Daehan Jeguk, The Great Korean Empire
The day was dark, a few black stray clouds thundered over with the threat of rainfall. It was the day that the moon kissed the sun, hiding any shred of light under its shadow.
The phenomena scared humans, and rapidly cooled the earth’s surface.
An icy layer of mist and fog had drawn itself over the villages, near the holy forest, obscuring everything under its velvety cloak. People all around quickly ran indoors, locked their doors, and closed their windows, until no one remained outside. Everyone was praying huddled inside their homes that death wouldn’t come knocking at their door.
A young boy of thirteen ran through the thicket of the holy forest. His destination is the entrance of the sacred dragon cave. His mission is to save his younger brother.
No one would listen to him when he said that the dragon had stolen him. No one would dare help him. No one believed him. For if you did not believe in the dragon that roamed the woods, it was safer to live in the bliss of their ignorance and never have to face fear- the cowards! Curse them all for not caring for his brother- the people of the village and his parents alike.
There was a gleaming sharp blade in his left hand, and blood covering the front of his shirt. Tears and dirt wet his face. A few times he stumbled, as his vision blurred, but he pushed to his feet and kept running. There was fear coursing through his veins- and his heart felt like it was about to jump out his throat.
He knew about the stories since he had been young. The legends about how the dragons had made humans fear, and they had to be slaughtered in wars. But they say that a particularly nasty and capricious dragon was sealed here and that he used to terrorize the poor folks of all the nearby villages, requiring fancy sacrifices to be appeased and rumors say that he also used to kidnap young men. Warnings had been told to all children, especially males, to stay out of the holy forest. That the seal was weak and the dragon was powerful, so that’s why, since then, this part of the forest had been forbidden to commoners.
He had not wanted to believe it, until it was his brother the one that was kidnapped for being to damned curious.
The boy ran even further and faster at the thought of his brother, ignoring the burning in his lungs as he struggled to catch his breath.
He could see the light of a fire up ahead. It was dark and hard to see but surely there were several men up ahead and sound of horse’s whining and loud shouting. There was laughter and boisterous shouting.
For some reason the presence of those men scared him far more than running into the dragon.
His speed picked up, pushing through the thicket. His breath coming in shallow and his lungs screamed as he came closer to the fire.
There were several men speaking a language that he had never heard before and he could hear it all clearly. Every word monstrous, their laughter, and their delight- humans were scary. The moon was just as cruel, parting away from embracing the sun, letting light shine brightly onto the darken world. Piercing through the fog, lighting up the world once again.
But it was not what he wanted to see.
His heart dropped, his eyes wide—and then the deafening sound of his scream as the world revealed the image before him.
And smiled at him, and bared the blood in his knife-
First chapter, sort of an Intro to the story.
