Chapter 3 - Kim Joonmyun

Changing Destiny

Chapter 3 - Kim Joonmyun
February 14th, 2014 - Friday - 6:55PM

A heavy sigh escaped from my lips as I swiped away the bead of sweat that ran down my forehead. I was finally done mopping all of the unoccupied practice rooms after that awkward encounter I had earlier with the boy and the nice sneakers. Next on the list was to clean up after the celebration party that was being held in the main hall due to someone’s successful promotions. The company had these types of parties after all promotions that go well for all the artists almost every few months or so.
Pushing the heavy janitorial cart down to the first floor with all the strength I had left, I stopped and parked it just down the hall from the main hall. Snapping my gloves on, I grabbed a brand new trashbag and headed inside the main hall. I was told by my boss that the party would be over by about 6:30, so I decided to wait a little longer just incase anyone stayed after. As I stepped inside, there were tables full of used napkins, dirty ceramic plates, half-empty wine glasses, and an abandoned buffet table along the side of the room.
At the other side of the room, a group of teenagers who were about the same age as me stood around just laughing and talking amongst themselves. Once they heard the door shutting behind me, the talking stopped and their heads all turned to see me. A dirty smirk played on one of the female’s face and her eyes rolled along as she crossed her arms. I heavily sighed and looked away to begin my clean up as peacefully as I could. I was in no mood to get into a small fight, and I was definitely in no mood to get fired. Quietly picking up all the disposables and throwing them into the trash bag, I could hear almost everything the kids were talking about in the corner of the room-
that included me.

There was a loud high-pitched scoff, “I feel bad for whoever has to clean up this mess. She must have to work really hard in order to get this place spotless or else there would probably be consequences that could possibly affect her job here.”
Giggles erupted out of the group right after, and I could see out of the corner of my eye that they were all looking at me. I rolled my eyes and whispered loud enough for her to hear, “Aish.. 짜증 난다 (jjajeung nanda ; Annoying)..”
“Bwoh?” another unpleasantly and loud scoff spat out of from across the room. Next thing I knew, the clicking of several heels made it’s way over to where I stood alone. I looked up to see about six girls standing around me, including their little leader.
Keeping my glare strong, I confidently looked at her straight into her fake double-eyelids and blinked.
“내가 당신을 위해 무엇을 할 수 있습니까? (naega dangsin-eul wi-hae mueos-eul hal su issseub-nikka? ; What can I do for you?)
“Actually, I’m one-hundred percent sure that I overheard you calling me names. 내 말이 맞지? (nae mal-i maj-ji? ; Am I right?)” She cocked her head to the side and kept a poker face on.
“아니. (Aniyo ; No).” I blandly responded without looking away. “Now if you will please excuse me, I must get back to cleaning.”
She fakely and obnoxiously laughed out loud, “Ahh, right. I shouldn’t disrupt your..” she waved her finger around everywhere, “...job.” She then paused for a moment and then smirked, “쓰레기의 소녀. (sseule-giui sonyeo ; Trashy girl)”
My head snapped up and I stared at her. Annoying me was a first, but calling me names and messing with me is a different story. She popped open and raised her eyebrows as she covered with her hand, “Oh.. did I offend you? I’m so sorry, I’m just clumsy with my words..” She picked up a wine glass that was about half-way full from the table next to us and slowly tipped it on it’s side. My eyes were burning into her scalp and fake extensions, and I couldn’t help but want to slam her face onto the ground and make her clean it up with her tongue. When she was done her water show, she dropped the glass and the shattering sound echoed along the empty walls of the main hall. At this time, my hands were balled up into fists and I bit the inside of my tongue as hard as I could to contain myself from yelling in her face.
“Omo! I’m so sorry again! I’m clumsy, remember?” She shrugged her shoulders as her face showed an expression of fake sorrow.
“Yah...” I managed to mumble through my clenched teeth.
“We would help you clean up but, we all have to go back to our homes to get some rest. Unlike some people we have training tomorrow morning. You know, because we’re trainees of this company.” She shifted her weight onto one foot and crossed her arms. “Trainees who become stars and celebrities. And then we become famous and we get to live our dreams making more money and having a better life than just cleaning up after other people for a living.”
It was like she wasn’t even messing with me anymore. It was like she was mentally punching my mind, trying to get me to think that she was better than me in as many ways as possible.
Even though I knew that she wasn’t any better than me, I wanted to tell her but I just couldn’t.
I don’t have the heart to say such awfully mean and cruel words to others, no matter what they’ve done.
My father told me that my mother used to always say that
‘everyone has a reason to their mistakes’.
So, I just looked at her and I couldn’t help but wonder why this girl has to feel the need of bothering others like a bully.
I just stood there with my jaw clenched, fists balled up, and the anger boiling inside of me. I was frozen, and I couldn’t help but feel defeated. So I just squatted down and started picking up the shattered glass pieces off of the floor.

“Wow.. her poor personality matches well with her poor job.” She added along as the girls giggled around her. I was no longer furious, but I was still angry. I was angry and embarrassed to have to do such a thing without even defending myself. As I threw away the pieces of glass into the trash bag, I felt a quick and sharp pain in the palm of my right hand.
Aish..I quietly whispered to myself and instantly closed my hand again. I could see the dark red liquid about to drip out of the white plastic glove, and the pain was just starting to kick in. My eyes were swelling up and I bit my lip as hard as I could to contain myself from looking like a fool.
“가자 (gaja ; let’s go), it looks like she’s got it all under contr--”
Her voice was cut off by one of the main doors of the main hall opening and there was a sound of running feet coming towards the direction in which we stood in. From the sounds of it, it only sounded like one person rushing over.
“Oh! Suho-oppa!” the girl’s voice perked up with excitement once she saw him, and a big smile took over her face.
His breathing sounded unsteady, and he stopped as her stood next to her.
“What happened? Is everyone okay? I heard a glass shatter from outside the hall as I was walking by. Is everything alright?” He worriedly asked once he realized that the room was full of younger females.
“Oppa, we’re all okay. Thank you for worrying though.” She giggled, and it disgusted me. She gasped before jumping up and clinging onto his arm, “Oppa! You should leave with us today! The girls and I were just going to 노래방 (nolaebang ; karaoke) to help celebrate EXO’s success! Ohh, it will be so much fun if you come, oppa please?” She begged with aegyo, and he let out a sigh of embarrassment/shyness as he rubbed the back of his neck. “Uhh...” He began but then suddenly stopped.
I felt a presence next to me on the low ground level and I ducked my head even lower behind my hair since the pain was worsening and I didn’t want anyone to see me in this condition.
I just wanted everyone to get away from me so I could treat it myself, but no one left their spot.

“저기요? ( jeogiyo ; Excuse me)” He scooted closer and bent his head down to get a view of my face. Out of the corner of my eye I could see his stare locked onto me, and his eyes were wide and full of concern. “당신은 괜찮아? (dangsin-eun gwaenchanh-a? ; Are you okay?)”
No reply.
I wasn’t going to answer him because if I did, I would have stopped biting my lip and I would’ve let out weak tears. I suddenly felt the tug of my injured hand in the warmth of another’s. He held onto my hand as if it was a fragile vase, and I could feel the lump in my throat getting bigger. “Subin-shi. I think you should go on without me.” He blankly said as he inspected my hand all around.
parted open in disbelief and she fake smiled,
“Ah, 알았어(Arraso ; Got it/Okay) Oppa.”
I looked up at her with my welding eyes and she glanced at me with an unappealing look. I quickly snapped my head back down at my hand due to a feeling of a sharp pain shooting through my wrist when the boy twisted it at a 90 degree angle. I silently winced and with an instinct, my hand jerked away from his presence.
He worriedly looked up and stared straight into my eyes,
“괜찮아? (gwaen-chana? ; Are you okay?) 미안 해요! (mian-haeyo ; Sorry) I was just trying to see if there were any other scars on your hand..”

I don’t know what came over me. I was still in shock due to the fact that this partially-handsome guy was sitting here actually helping me, Nam Na Young, or the fact that he didn’t leave with those girls.
I mean, I know they were snobby and all but I’m not going to lie and say that they weren’t pretty. And it was obvious that the little leader had a
thing for this guy. He stared at my facial features to see if I had any other reaction to when he rotated my wrist around in a circle. I looked away before things got too awkward and he cleared his throat before standing up.
Great. I should’ve known. I should’ve have known that he probably couldn’t care less about some stupid cut on some random girl he just met.
But it was his next few words that had left me confused.
“I’ll be right back. Don’t move or get up or anything, 알았어? (Arraso? ; Got it?)” He spoke with a sincere, yet stern tone. I opened my mouth to say something back, but my mouth and my brain weren’t cooperating together. “I’m going to get the first aid kit, don’t move an inch!” He nodded his head at me before running out the doors again.

It was quiet all over again.
The tears that were fighting to escape the rims of my eyes finally fell and I swiftly wiped it off with my left forearm. I sniffled before standing up, and I looked around for anything that would help with my hand. Spotting a long napkin, I released my grip on my right hand, and wrapped it tightly around the wounded area. As tightly as I could, I tied it up with a double knot, with the helping of my teeth. At first it stung but since the wrap was so tight, I felt the numbness starting to follow through. Somewhere at the back of my mind, something was bothering me.

Have I seen him before?
Realization came to my mind after I completed the knot around my hand. This party was for him. He was the reason why this place was all full of trash and the reason why those girls were here in the first place. I heavily sighed and began to carefully pick up the remaining shards of glass on the floor and then tossed them into the garbage bag. As I was wiping the floor in circular motions, the opening of the door was heard once again. The Suho guy came jogging back in with a small white box in his hand. When he saw me, he defeatedly let out a sigh and put the box down on a nearby table. Bending down towards the floor next to me, he grabbed a few more paper towels and began to help clean up the dark red mess on the ground.
“I’m guessing you’re one of those girls that don’t like to be bossed around, huh?” He lightly chuckled as he threw away the napkin into the garbage bag. I’m guessing he noticed my puffy and red eyes, but he tried not to mention it because I could tell that he didn’t want to make the atmosphere ever more uncomfortable than it already was.
“Na Young-shi?”
The way my name rolled off his tongue had sparked something in me. I didn’t know what the feeling was, and I didn’t like that feeling what-so ever.
What is wrong with you? You can’t feel like that, he’s not like you. He’s different. You can’t. I had thought to myself.
I looked up at him and without even thinking, the words just started spilling out,
“How did you-”
“Your name tag..”
He pointed out with his finger and slyly smiled.

I embarrassingly looked away from his stare and bit on my lower lip. And without a word, I just continued to throw the disposable trash around us into the garbage bag that I had brought in earlier. “You know, you should really get that wrapped up now. Before it gets infected.” He tried to sound as convincing as possible.
I ignored him and continued to throw things away with my painful hand.

“I took a pretty fast jog just to get this first aid kit right here, it would be a shame to see all of that hard work to go to waste..”

I stopped and looked at him with a straight face. He obviously was not getting the idea that I did not want any help. But he was being so persistent with the situation, and I had a feeling that if I didn’t get it wrapped up he would not stop talking. He looked at me with anticipation and waited for an answer. We would be here all night if I didn’t answer him, so I just sighed and pulled out a chair then took a seat in front of him as I stuck out my hand. He raised his eyebrows and softly smirked,
“So, you’re gonna let me play the doctor for a little bit now?”

I tilted my head to the side and just stared at him with calm eyes. My arm was starting to ache from sticking it out in mid-air for so long so I lightly shook it as a sign of ‘yes, now hurry up my arm is getting tired’. He smiled and carefully took ahold of my wrist again before sitting down in the chair from across me,
“I will take good care of you for the time being, Miss. Na Young-shi.” He cheekily smiled before opening up the first aid kit.

And that was how I met Kim Joonmyun, the ‘perfect Prince Charming’.
Little did we both know at the time that everything was going to change after we met.
Nothing was going to ever be the same again.
And so this is where our journey began. The journey where this young man had changed my life for the better.
This young man taught me the little things in life that I needed to know and understand in order to grow up. Even if there were arguments and disagreements along the way, something deep inside of me kept reminding me that everything happens for a reason. And this man showing up in my life was good reason.
I didn’t believe that there were good people in world that actually wanted to help others- until I met him.
Kim Joonmyun.
