Year 2100. Selective birth control as the main policy of the 21th century slowly drained economy and caused grave imbalance in the structure of the society, leaving the world with approximate  4:1 male to female ratio.

Forced to take action and resolve the issue of rapidly decreasing number of infants, the government made controversial yet unavoidable constitutional amendments to repair this mistake – from now on, certain percent of selected male citizens was supposed to undergo a complicated gene modification and hormone treatment allowing them to carry children.

Furthermore, unauthorized coupling – that is selecting a partner before the government officially intervenes – became strictly forbidden and punishable by imprisonment.

It’s year 2200. Modified male genetics is no longer obtained by medical means, some children are simply born with it.

They are called contributors, or submissive males – and just like everyone else, in their late teens or early twenties await official examination that leads to the authorities selecting an ideal partner for them.

This way, their future is determined.

Baekhyun has good head on his shoulders and a rather disarming smile that gets him out of trouble more often than sometimes, conveniently covering bitterness that gnaws at his heart on daily basis. He holds little interest in ridiculous concepts like love,  family or anything equally superficial and silly, but when the nurse reads aloud his score, that is 10 out of 15, he’s somewhat relieved anyway. At least it’s not the highest one. And not the lowest.

Luhan scores 15 out of 15 thanks to his wits and unquestionable beauty, which puts him high on the priority list of awaiting submissive partners. Struggling with well-covered intimacy issues, deep inside he’s anything but happy.

Kyungsoo is pragmatic, dutiful and blessed with amazing insights. Even during the examination nurses can’t help but admire his assets, calling him a diamond – sharp, extremely durable and mesmerizingly charming. He’s relatively good in everything he does, too, and that alone wins him 13 points out of 15. 

After the examination ends and the door closes behind them, there are still many days ahead of the contributors, days filled with anxiety of the unknown, shy hope for a happy ending and most importantly - a sting of realization that this is where their childhood ends, painlessly and in complete, dreadful silence.

But maybe, just maybe, it's not for the worst - after all, tomorrow's Christmas.

A/N: Hello everyone! This is - hopefully - a start of another long series of mine, but it really depends on how you'll like the concept. It's a well known pattern, I've read a bunch of awesome fics taking place in similar universe, and I have to admit I loved them all. It's really thrilling and with so many possibilities to explore! Also, this is my private attempt for a 'happier' mpreg than my other fic, "The Moonstone".
