Chapter 37 – Cafe
 

“I can’t let anyone see this…”

She searched for a lighter and she set it on fire

“Bye bye...” She smirked

You were at the hospital that day, playing with the kids at the playground

Suddenly your cell phone rang. You took it out of your pocket and checked the caller ID

‘Unknown’

You squatted down and gave the children a smile. “You kids play by yourselves, okay? I have to take a call,” you told them

The kids whined and pouted but then did as you said

You answered your phone, “Yoboseyo?”

“Hyeri-ssi?” a female voice said

“Yes, who is this?”

“It’s Tiffany, can we meet now?”

‘This can’t be good…’ you thought

“Umm… Sure, where?”

You went into the café Tiffany had told you to go to

You saw her sitting at the back then went to her table and sat in front of her

A smile grew on her face when she saw you. “Thank you for coming, Hyeri-ssi.”

“No problem.” You smiled back. “So, why did you ask to meet me?”

Tiffany’s smile instantly disappeared and she bit her lip. You were waiting for her answer and she finally spoke up. “Please leave Jaejoong.”

Your eyebrows raised in surprise when you heard that. “What?”

“Hyeri-ssi, I know about your… condition…” she said

“Condition?”

Tiffany closed her eyes for a moment before opening them again and then sighed. “I know you have leukemia,” she said sternly

Your body froze. You were shocked that she knew. “How… did you know…?” you questioned in suspicion

“I ‘accidentally’ saw your health records when I was at Jaejoong’s house. I know I shouldn’t have looked at it, but I didn’t know what it was before I read it,” she said, suddenly feeling a little bit guilty towards you

“W-wait. Does that mean Jaejoong knows about this too?!”

“No. He didn’t even know it was already sent to him. I think he asked for your health records at the hospital, that’s why it was at his house. I took it and read it without him knowing…”

“And where is it now?”

“I… sort of… burned it…” she admitted, feeling guiltier

 You let out a sigh of relief

“Why are you happy about it?” she asked in confusion

“I don’t want Jaejoong to know about this either… Especially if he had to know by reading my health records, not by myself…”

“That’s great then! You don’t want him to know and I don’t want him to know. And by leaving he can never know, right??” she said happily

Your furrowed your eyebrows and let out a small chuckle. “It’s true that I don’t want him to know, but I don’t want to leave him… I’m planning to tell him soon… someday…” you mumbled the last part

“Hyeri-ssi, now you’re just being selfish.”

You tilted your head and crossed your arms. “What’s that supposed to mean?” you asked, slightly irritated by her words

“You must’ve realized by now that he had already felt that something is wrong, or else why would he ask for your health records?”

You nodded uncertainly

“You’re putting him in misery. He doesn’t even know that his girlfriend is hiding a huge secret from him. And it’s concerning her life and death!”

She took a deep breath and looked at you sharply. “Look, if you’re not planning to tell him soon, I suggest you just leave him. You don’t even know when you’re life will be in the verge of ending…” she said honestly

“It’s not even determined yet, whether or not I’ll be dying or not! I could maybe suddenly be cured!”

Tiffany looked at you with concern. “You know the chances of that actually happening are low…”

You looked down and gripped your arms tighter. You were neither shocked nor angry at what she had said.

She sighed deeply. “I’m sorry if I sound too harsh. But, isn’t it better for you to leave him? If you leave, he would never know about your condition. He could live a better life without you…”

 “But still… I can’t…”

“Then let me ask you this, do you love him?” she asked

“Of course I love him!”

“Then by leaving, you’ll lessen his pain. It’s better to let him suffer because of a break up than to let him see you dying,” she reasoned

You felt tears welling up in your eyes. You couldn’t deny anything she said, because you knew they were true. And you, yourself had thought about the possibilities of you dying. You didn’t want to let Jaejoong suffer in pain because of you

You looked away and bit your lips hard to prevent the tears from falling, but they couldn’t be held back

“I’m sorry Hyeri-ssi… But this is reality. You can’t just keep Jaejoong and live in your own world where you think everything is just okay. Because it’s not, and it’s not gonna be. Trust me, this is better for you, Jaejoong and it’s better for me too.” She gave you a warm smile

You stayed silent and thought deeply about it

You opened your mouth to say something, but your voice wasn’t coming out

You took a deep breath. "Give me time to think about it."

You wiped your tears with your hands and got up. You took your bag and left the café without saying another word

Tiffany just sighed while watching you leave and she felt bad. But she had to do this, for not only Jaejoong’s sake, but for her sake as well
