A Birthday Bash

Description

We don't have the power to choose where we come from.

But we can, definitely, still choose where we go from there.

Foreword

“President Seo, what colors would you like to use? Cool or warm?”

Seohyun didn’t even hesitate upon hearing her dongsaeng’s out of a sudden question and chose straightforwardly. “Cool colors of course. Our theme is calmness, coolness every ness-word which defines the sky and the ocean. Specifically, I want African violet, Lavender, Mauve, Periwinkle, Baby blue, Light blue, Sea green, fern green and mint green. Basically, only the pastel colors for green, violet and blue.” She then carefully marked the measurement needed for the signboards.

Sulli grimaced at the older lady. “Unnie, you could’ve simply said pastel colors though. Seriously…” She mumbled the last word yet sort of audible for her unnie to hear. With a curt shake of her head in disbelief, Sulli proceeded on her assigned corner and worked quietly.

Seohyun personally thought it was a bit cold for Sulli to do such act but thought that she must be just really tired. She then paused from computing the expenses and had a deep thought about it. She had always been strict and uptight with the members of her team. Maybe, their sore feelings were fueled up with the way she treated them.

As she heaved a sigh, she couldn’t help but to look around her fellow schoolmates. Since they’re the governing body, their department was the busiest one, organizing the events for the school’s upcoming festival.

She then realized that most of them were either frowning or glaring on nothing particular. Some were exhaling loudly. Some had their eyes shut off. Some, some just looked in a mess. And Seohyun was sure to herself that there’s no one else whom they could be reflecting–no one else besides the president herself.

Something unexplainable tugged in her conscience, all of the responsibilities as a good leader mentally slapped her two squishy cheeks. She might have completed all of the tasks perfectly but she wasn’t able to appreciate the help of her staff. She hadn’t even treated out any of them because all that matters to her was how perfect everything should be.

Plopping herself down to the rotating computer chair, she pressed her temples and tried to gather the rest of her energy. Yet, she absolutely knew that the foul expressions plastered on her team would be coming back again.

Colorful and enormous signboards that lined up in the rangy corridor greeted Seohyun. Although the refined decorations filled only half of the building, everything was placed on delicately. All of the bulletin boards were even renewed even with the fact that the Department of Arts had just recently designed them. Seohyun wanted everything to fit the given theme for the event by the school.

Yet, her heart remained empty and gloomy. She would admit that she still hadn’t feel proud of her deeds. Almost every time, she felt like she should’ve done something else; something that’s better to what she had worked hard for already. She felt like she hadn’t done enough.

Her brows couldn’t help but to form an intersection as she ended up blaming herself. On the other hand, she really thought that she’s actually the one to be blamed. She didn’t only pressure her officers through her meticulous eyes and greedy desires but she had actually enslaved them too.

The way that Sulli gave cold shoulders on her, that both Yoona and Sooyoung kept giving her a silent treatment and even the boys who admired her from head to toe (namely Sehun and Kai) have rolled their eyes on her.

She was about to continue downstairs when she saw Kris, her boyfriend who isn’t her boyfriend, texting seriously on his phone.

“Kris…” She called him which caused him to abruptly put the phone back on his side pocket.

She didn’t really make a big deal out of it since she’s not the type to enlarge such petty things. But when the towering man turned at her with his eyes burning flames inside, she believed it’s another matter. Not that she had taken him for granted, but she somehow expected him to soften upon the sight of his messed up girlfriend.

Kris might not be aware of it but Seohyun honestly had fully remembered even his littlest mannerism. She knew how his eyes would turn into a pair of gleaming orbs, sparkling at her. She knew that when he’s biting his lower lips, he’s nervous or hesitating. She knew that when she turns her back at him, he’ll secretly send her flying kisses. About that secret, she found it once when she caught their reflection through the life-size mirror in the school’s gymnasium.

But as for now, she knew that through his squint eyes, he was sending daggers in her. She could feel her cheeks flushed in crimson as the two of them continued to look at each other. Her feet shuffled coyly as she cleared .

“W-who are you talking with–”

He didn’t even let her finish when he spoke already, his icy-cold tone freezing the most interior part of her body–her soul to be exact. “It doesn’t matter.” He then tilted his head to the side, pointing out her unfinished tasks. “I’m pretty sure you’ll have to finish those things. I won’t even bother waiting for you later because I’m also sure that Kyuhyun hyung will fetch you instead. I don’t have to worry no more.” He purposely scoffed, turning his back on her. “I have to attend some practice.”

Seohyun lifelessly watched the man who shattered her worn out heart into tiny little pieces. She knew exactly what he was talking about. Not unknown from her, she had been neglecting his numerous efforts in waiting for her. She was always supposed to ride a bike with him since the man had always insisted to personally send her home. According to him, he wouldn’t be able to sleep peacefully without him seeing her walk and go inside the front door of her house.

But since this past two weeks had been as hectic as hell, Seohyun would always go home three more hours after the original dismissal time for fourth year students. And so, she would either keep him waiting on the waiting shed outside their campus or have him called by his worried parents. And if it’s the latter, Kyuhyun–her older brother who works until seven in the evening, would be the one fetching her and sending her home instead.

But the point was that she neglected all of his efforts as a worried boyfriend. She had her two eyes, mind, brain and even soul at the tasks that she didn’t have anything left for her boyfriend. She couldn’t even lend some ears to listen at his hilarious daily stories nor a voice to console him when his coach had yelled on him on their basketball practice.

With the way he acted, Seohyun wondered as to where the mushy and ever-so-patient giant did go. Of that, she wasn’t really sure. But as she encountered his distant and moping side, Seohyun finally believed that truth simply hurts. No, she actually believed that the expression truth hurts was an understatement. Because no matter how she kept it in, tears uncontrollably flowed from the corners of her eyes down to her neck.

And for now, on the seventh of June in which the one and only day she could celebrate her day of being alive, became nothing but just another day; just another day wherein she would cry her heart out alone.
