A New Cast Awakens

Hearts That Beat Anew

“Our class is assigned to do a play for the entertainment of the school”. Onew’s announcement was followed by countless groans and whines.

“Sorry guys, I lost the draw lots,” he reasoned. “Let’s just move on since we only have three days prepare. I will waste no time and assign our director.” He pointed to Yura with a smirk on his face. “Since you’re known for being an aspiring artist, you shall be our director. No objections. The play’s a parody of Sleeping beauty. Please direct it well.”

Even though it was an honor to be appointed, she couldn’t help but feel the burden of the responsibility weighing down her shoulders. Yura never considered herself responsible let alone a leader to begin with. Not to mention, half the class were dudes so it’ll be a challenge for her.

Onew stepped aside. “The floor’s yours.”

She stood front and center and dictated her improvised schedule, trying not to sound too strict ‘cause she didn’t really wanna roll like that; she just wanted to be chill yet productive.

“I will need two and a half hours to write a script so while I’m doing so, I would like everyone else to start moving the desks to the side in order maximize our space, think of where to buy the props and costumes as well as how to make them, and pitch in some ideas ‘cause who knows, they may be awesome. When the script’s done, I will hold a speed audition for those who want to snag a role; those who will not be actors are automatically in the prod crew. After that, we’ll go concentrate on prop-making and having the actors memorize their lines. Any questions?”

There were no questions given much to her delight.

“Then let’s get started.”

The two hours was surprisingly productive and fun. At least for them that is ‘cause in Yura’s case, she was busting her off to make a retarded script. Once in a while, her classmates came to give her some of their suggestions. Some she politely rejected and some she accepted enthusiastically. It didn’t come to a surprise that half of the accepted suggestions came from Sungyeol and Dongwoo who were pretty much born crazy.

When she was done with the script she told the prod crew to compress in the right side of the classroom for a moment while the auditions were being held. Since it was a speed audition, there was no script; it was all improvised. She also had the authority to cut them whenever she pleased.

The first was Hyuna who was auditioning for the role of Princess Aurora. Yura gave her the signal to start so she twirled around playfully then abruptly lied down flat on the floor with her eyes closed.

“Pass. You got the part,” she said then shooed her away. She was the only one auditioning for the role anyway; the only other girl was CL and Yura doubted that she’d want to be the princess.

The next three came in together stating that they’d be auditioning as the three fairies. They came in wearing child-sized fairy wings of red, green, and blue from who knows where that contrasted with their studded leather jackets. Myungsoo’s wings were red, Sungyeol’s were green, and Dongwoo’s were blue.

“Uh, check it. This is Woo Fairy, Myung Fairy, and Yeol Fairy here to bring entertainment to you,” Dongwoo rapped holding an invisible microphone. “Yeol Fairy, drop da’ beat.”

Commence Sungyeol’s bad beatboxing featuring his overexaggerated flailing hand gestures and tacky oversized shades.

Before Myung Fairy’s part even happened, she halted them upon being spat upon by the beatboxer.

“If your beatboxer didn’t spit at my face, I would’ve reconsidered listening more,” she commented, ticked off. “Myungsoo, you’re the prince. Other two, you’re fairies.”

“Hold up, wait a minute!” Sungyeol pointed at Myungsoo and stormed toward her. “He didn’t even do anything but stand there and look hot!”

“Exactly. He just needed to stand there and look hot.” She jotted down the new additions to the cast then swished her pen to the left, telling them to leave.

“Hold up, wait a minute!” Halted Sunggyu. “I won’t let this be.”

Yura raised a brow quizzically; she knew what he was up to. “And why is that?”

He stuttered and frantically blinked. “Y-you see, i-it’s just that—“

“Third fairy.” She once again swished her pen to the left and said, “So shut up, it up and leave.”

“Burn!” Sungjong chanted in the background. Sunggyu shot a death glare him. The flower boy quietly shriveled up in his place.

“Now that’s over and since there’s not much time left, I would like to ask the last three people to step in.”

The last three auditionees walked to the center. They were CL, Sungjong, and Jinyoung.

Yura glanced at her clipboard then said, “CL, I reckon you’re auditioning for Magnificent’s role.”

“Isn’t it Maleficent?”

“Originally, but the villain’s name is Magnificent because when they scream your name in terror, they will yell, ‘Magnificent!’ so they sound as if they’re enjoying your presence when they really aren’t. Evil, right? And since you already pretty much look and act like a villain, you pass. No audition needed.”

CL didn’t know whether to take it as a compliment or not but decided to let it go and went to join the other cast members.

“As for you two… the only characters left are the king and queen.”

“But we’re both dudes,” Jinyoung pointed out.

“But Sungjong looks like a girl,” Yura straightforwardly responded. “He has a nice waist that would look damn fine in a corset.”

“Aw, Yura,” whined Sungjong. “I wanna be a man!”

“I want you to be my queen so stop being a baby and get into your queenly heels.”

“But—“

“Good luck and have fun.”

“Fine.”

Pouting Sungjong then left with Jinyoung to join CL and the others to practice their lines.

The morning went on with the production crew which was a pain in the for Yura; multi-tasking was a must for her. She needed to not only check on the actors’ acting but also the props, the effects—practically everything that had to do with the entire production. She didn’t even have any time to eat so by noon she was really cranky. And to keep herself awake, she drank espresso all day long on a paper cup. She hated espresso.

Out of nowhere, Jinyoung came up to Yura and gave her his very own tumbler. “Here, drink from this. You’ve been spilling some coffee.”

He was standing too close to her. She stepped back and simply said, “Thanks.”

From afar, the band was eyeing on them especially Sungjong who didn’t look particularly amused at all.

“What’s he doing trying to be all close to her huh?” asked Sungjong bitterly, arms crossed.

“Dude, your position’s being threatened,” Sunggyu stated matter-of-factly, leaning against the wall. “He has a good resume too. He has nice eyes, he has a bigger waist, he’s the class president with a breath-taking talent in swooning girls’ hearts—“

“Oh, shut up!” complained Sungjong, not wanting to hear any more. “Yura said I had nice eyes and so what if my waist is small?! I was born this way.”

“Suit yourself. But don’t be a sissy that just stands in the sidelines or else he’ll be far ahead of you before you know it,” Myungsoo said.

“Why’d you think Yeol and I were so aggressive when we were just starting to like each other? It was because we didn’t want anyone to go around messing with our men,” Sungyeol added, slinging his arms around his boyfriend’s shoulders.

Sungjong scoffed at them. “Coming from the couple who never had their first kiss despite displaying skinship 24/7.”

The ever so chic couple changed face and became awkward all of a sudden, babbling weird excuses loudly and whatnot. And when Dongwoo decided to make matters worse by reminding them that Hyuna and Myungsoo had a kiss scene, Sunggyu and Sungyeol couldn’t help but panic. The two proceeded to huddle up in a random corner as if they were discussing some master plan. Whatever it was, the other band members didn’t really care; Myungsoo remained calm, Dongwoo was too busy admiring CL, and Sungjong zipped off to shield Yura from being captivated by Jinyoung.

“Yura, Yura, look! I’m a cat!” said Sungjong cutely while he raised a couple of cotton balls atop his head to make it look like he had cat ears. “Meow!”

Yura’s stressed face quickly turned into a wide smile. “Aw, what a nice little kitty.”

“I’m not little! I’m large!”

“And fat?”

“No, just—well—whatever I am cute!”

Amused, she grabbed one of the cotton balls and playfully threw it at him. They both laughed. Amidst that, Jinyoung the er entered patting Yura’s hair. She took a step back. Sungjong made use of his advantage and patted her hair repetitively as if it was a hand trampoline of some sort while looking at his enemy with narrowed eyes.

Not really picking up on the sprouting rivalry between the two, she told the king and queen to rehearse their lines while she will try to convince their classmate, Sulli, to get them some makeup ‘cause her she had connections with a certain cosmetics company. After sending them away, the two awkwardly rehearsed together.

Meanwhile, Sunggyu was interrogating Hyuna. Sitting right beside her as she memorized her script, he shyly yet eagerly asked her a barrage of questions. No matter how obvious or stupid.

“How do you feel about this play?”

“It’s interesting.”

“What would you call your makeup look for today?”

“I’m not wearing any makeup.”

“Lies.”

“Hey—“

Before she could answer, he continued asking.

“Then how do you feel about your character?”

“I like it.”

“Even the kiss?”

“Well…”

Her voice trailed off spawning awkwardness around them. Sunggyu was even more awkward now that he knew that she knew that he likes her. He didn’t even know whether she liked him back given her vague answer on that dramatically moonlit night.

Desperate to kill the awkward silence, she continued, “I’ll just see when the time comes. But there’s less pressure ‘cause Myungsoo already has someone.” She pretended to look at something then playfully asked, “Why? Are you worried?”

“Well…”

It was his turn for his voice to trail off. Luckily, the SFX team was testing out the dragon roar sound which, by the way, was so loud that everyone had to duck and cover their ears.

“Turn it off, turn it off!” yelled Yura.

Once the room went mute, everyone lowered their hands in relief to let their ears breathe out the sudden outburst. The sound of the school bell followed.

In a cool way, Yura drank the last of her bitter espresso from Jinyoung’s tumbler and said, “Let’s clean up and leave. Everyone please get a lot of rest; we have a lot in store for us tomorrow. We need to finish the backdrop as well as go to the mall to shop for the costumes. Also, let’s crank up some tunes once in a while for motivation and stress relief, yes? Thank you all for your awesome productivity and rest well.”

With that, the first day of production ended. Yura was dead exhausted having to run on espresso energy all day so she hit the sack the moment she got back to her dorm. She didn’t eat dinner. There was a lot for her to deal with that day but nevertheless she considered herself accomplished.

It's been a few chapters since Jinyoung had appeared but he's back, and with that starts a competition. Jinyoung vs. Sungjong. BWAHAHA~! >;]
