Stupid Wall

Jumping to Conclusions

I felt so completely invisible. The other girls walked around in groups, linking arms, totally ignoring me. Because I sat in the back, there was no one around to talk to other than Yoseob and he was just awkward. Just like me, he had no idea what the heck was going on.

To make everything worse, the other students were constantly turning back to look at him, making me feel even more out of place and uncomfortable. I disliked attention even though it wasn’t aimed at me. Their stares still felt like they were burning holes in my forehead even when nobody even so much as glanced at me.

I breathed a sigh of relief when the bell finally rang for lunch break. I hurriedly grabbed my homemade lunch out of my backpack and looked around. With nowhere to go and no one to guide me, I walked around aimlessly. Somehow, my feet led me up two flights of stairs, through a door and out to the school rooftop. I slowly breathed in the fresh air and walked across the place. Leaning on the railing, I looked down, surveying the scene below.

There were splatters of students here and there, some under trees, some on benches, some laying down on the grass. My eyes wandered around searching for a certain someone. I never found him, though. I saw Yoseob, instead and sure enough, he was chatting up a storm with a couple guys, having made friends in such a short period of time. Another sigh escaped my lips as I watched them, longingly.

The soft sound of footsteps behind me shook me out of my trance. My eyes widened and I spun around quickly coming face to face with the one guy I thought would never utter a single word at me. “You know…when you sigh your happiness escapes.” The boy before me stuck out a hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Eun Mi. I’m Lee Joon."

I stared at his smiling face and as if I was mezmerized, I took his hand in mine’s, accidently holding it for a second too long.

Joon awkwardly cleared his throat and pulled his hand back, casually sticking it into his pockets. “I didn’t know anyone else who actually came up here, to the rooftop." He said, as a breeze swept by, lightly ruffled his hair.

“It’s peaceful up here.” I replied.

He nodded and just like me, shifted his weight onto the railing and looked down. I watched him, admiring the back of his muscular figure. I was still shamelessly looking at his body when I saw his whole entire body suddenly tense. Joon turned back to me and without making eye contact, said, “Mian, I have to go now." He strode past me without another word, and I heard his footsteps echoing down the stairs as he made his way down.

Did I do something wrong? I asked myself. I stared at the entrance, confused. I was about to look down to see what had made him so distressed when my phone vibrated in my pocket. It was a text from the class president, Minhyun.

Lee Eun Mi, class starts in about a minute. Where are you? Are you lost? The teacher is worried.

My eyes bugged out as I checked the time and I hurriedly shot a text back.

Mianhae! I lost track of time. I’ll be right there!

I shoved the phone into my pocket and stumbled down the stairs to the classroom.

I desperately looked left and right, panting like no tomorrow. I rounded a corner, hoping to find the class in front of me. Sadly, I had no such luck. The corridor wasn't at all familiar. I retreated going back the way I had come, pulling out my cell.

Still walking, I started composing message to Minhyun.

Sorry to ask but...could you give me directions to t-

I let out a sharp gasp as I walked right into a wall. The impact had me tumbling to the ground, and my phone flew out of my hand, landing on the ground with an audible crack. Rubbing my forehead, I looked up at the "wall" I had just hit straight on only to find the other new transfer student staring at me, his mouth making a perfect 'O.'

We stared at each other like that for a couple seconds before he finally realized exactly what he had just done. "OMIGOSH! I'M SO SORRY! ARE YOU OKAY?"

Ignoring him, I scrambled to my fallen phone and picked it up gingerly. There, on the face of it, was an enormous fracture.

I cursed.
