Fate is a Fickle Mistress

The Typical Story (with a twist)

Fate was either smiling on Minho or playing a trick on him. The one boy he wanted to avoid at all costs was in every single one of his classes. Not only that, but it appeared to Minho that Kibum was trying to be seated near him. Using all of his willpower, Minho tried to find a guy that was more attractive than Kibum. Find one that pierce every one of his senses the way Kibum could. By lunch, Minho had come to the depressing realization that he had fallen for Kibum hook, line, and sinker.

Since the juniors and seniors had different lunch times, Minho was unsure where to sit. He had met some of Jonghyun’s soccer buddies on Friday but he didn’t feel like he knew them well enough to just join their table. As he stood near the end of the food line, he scanned the cafeteria for an empty table. It’s better to eat alone than to intrude on someone’s table.

“Minho oppa! Join us,” Sulli exclaimed. She walked up to him and grabbed his tray, taking it to the table she shared with Kibum and some friends. Minho had no choice but to join the table. Sulli introduced the three other guys at the table as Tao, Kris, and Jongin. Minho greeted them but then began eating without trying to join in the conversation. While eating, he couldn’t help but sneak glances at Jongin.

“I know I’m gorgeous Minho-ssi. I don’t mind if you take a picture instead of just stealing glances, Jongin said, causing Minho to choke on his food.

“I’m sorry, it’s just, you look very similar to my little brother,” Minho said, turning red from the embarrassment of being caught.

“Now that is the oddest pick-up line I’ve ever heard,” Jongin said laughing. Minho laughed as well and leaned closer.

“Oh cutie,” he said, lowering his voice to a sensual growl, “I don’t need pick-up lines.” The other five at the table gasped while Minho fumbled through his bag for his phone.

“It wasn’t a pick-up line,” he finally said. “See, here’s a picture of Tae.” He held out his phone for everyone to see. They were all surprised to see that indeed, Jongin and Minho’s brother looked very much alike.

“My goodness, you two could almost be twins,” Tao exclaimed. The bell rang and Minho headed off to classes all of which he shared with Kibum.

Kim Kibum woke up early on the morning of the first day of school. He wanted to get to the advisor’s office to have his schedule changed first thing. He convinced the lady in charge of juniors to put him in all of Minho’s classes. After all, shouldn’t he help out his brother’s roommate? If you had pressed Kibum for his reason to monitor Minho, he would have had a hard time expressing his reasoning. He tried to explain it to Jongin the night before. What it boils down to is he felt a sure of anger when he saw Minho dancing and kissing with that guy at the club. Jongin just looked at him and raised an eyebrow. Kibum made sure to sit near Minho in every class. His friends joined him as often as they could but Minho stayed quiet and kept to himself.

“Looks like your brother’s ‘dangerous’ roommate is more the meek and mild type,” Jongin said to Kibum at lunch. The two could see Minho standing to the side trying to spot a place to sit.

“Shut up,” Kibum snapped and smacked the back of Jongin’s head.

“I’m going to ask Minho oppa to join us,” Sulli said and got up. She walked up to Minho, grabbed his tray and led him to their table. Minho greeted those who were at the table and was introduced to those he didn’t already know. Kibum couldn’t help but notice the way Minho’s eyes widened slightly when he was introduced to Jongin. There it was again, that odd surge of rage. This rage only grew when he noticed that Minho kept glancing at Jongin during lunch. Finally, Kibum couldn’t contain his anger any longer and excused himself from the table. He never got to hear that Minho’s fascination with Jongin had to do with Jongin’s similarity to Minho’s brother.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the time school was over, Minho was glad to go to soccer tryouts. He wanted, no, needed the exercise to get his mind off of Kibum. It worked, for the two hours try-outs too up. Nothing can distract Minho from a competition. He and Jonghyun stayed out on the field while the others went in to shower. Jonghyun needed to stow the equipment away and Minho chose to help him and then shower back in their room.

“There’s a rumor going around that you hit on Kai today at lunch,” Jonghyun said.

“Kai?” Minho shot Jonghyun a questioning look.

“Jongin. He dated Sulli last year. She re-named him Kai before she ‘upgraded’ to my brother,” Jonghyun explained, his tone telling Minho exactly what he thought of Sulli.

“Oh, I don’t know as if I’d say I was hitting on him. It was more of a friendly flirtation,” Minho said.

“Either way, don’t you think your boyfriend would dislike it?” Jonghyun asked.

“Boyfriend?” Minho asked. He felt as if he was walking in on someone else’s conversation.

“Yeah, Kyuhyun hyung,” Jonghyun explained, with an expression that clearly said, “Duh!”

“Kyu hyung and I aren’t boyfriends. We just, um, (how do I say this), play together from time to time,” Minho explained.

“Hey, we’re friends now, right?” Jonghyun asked after five minutes of silence. Minho nodded in reply. “So, can I ask you a way too personal question?”

     “Sure.”

“I couldn’t help but notice when I walked in on you that Kyuhyun hyung was on top of you so that makes me assume you are ……. Anyway, how do two guys decide who plays what role?” Jonghyun asked, never looking at Minho. Minho just started chuckling.

“Well, I can’t speak for others but I don’t always bottom. I’m more versatile, I guess you could say. Kyuhyun hyung and I play a game. We both try to seduce the other and whoever gives in first bottoms. Each couple must decide for themselves what works for them,” Minho said.

“So, when you said play, you mean it literally. You two play a game with each other as some sort of what? ?” Jonghyun said. By now the two of them had made it back to their dorm room.

“We started our ‘relationship’ back when I was a freshman in high school. I was already halfway in love with Nichkhun and Kyu hyung was in love with a straight guy at his school. We don’t love each other but we like each other enough to find comfort in each other,” Minho explained.

“What about now?” Jonghyun questioned. “Why don’t you find more than just someone you like enough to have with?”

“Because I’m stupid enough to always fall for the straight guys,” Minho sighed. “Are you saying you currently have a crush on a straight guy?” Jonghyun questioned. Minho just nodded.

“It’s not, I mean,” Jonghyun stopped and sort of gestured toward himself.

“No man, not you! Besides, I said I fell for a straight guy,” Minho laughed. “The way you look at Jinki hyung’s tells me you’re as straight as I am.” Jonghyun ducked his head and nervously rubbed the base of his skull.

“Am I that obvious?” He muttered.

“No, but it takes one to know one, I guess,” Minho chuckled. Jonghyun let the subject drop but spent the rest of the week watching Minho. He was certain that if he paid close enough attention he’d be able to figure it out. By Saturday, he had indeed found the answer. All it took was a trip to the mall.

A/N: Sorry that I didn't update for the entire summer. I work at an elementary school so I only have a steady job during the school year. This summer I got a job at a daycare and ended up working eight hours a day with no break, not even for lunch. By the time I got home I could barely think in complete sentences, let alone type one. Now that I'm back to my regular job, please expect more. Thank you and I hope you enjoy!
