Trespasser

An Exotic Terrain

It had been almost a week since you first washed up on EXO Island and you had finally adjusted into the routine of living with the EXO-K tribe. The boys were always busy during the day but luckily their breaks were planned in a way to ensure you were rarely by yourself.

Kai didn’t talk to you again since the night by the river nor did you see much of him during the day at all. He was the one member that didn’t take time off duty to keep you company. Part of you was glad that you didn’t have to deal with his cold attitude and contagious bad luck but another part of you was a little hurt that he didn’t want to get to know you like the others did.

Despite how much you disliked Kai, that never stopped you from taking every chance you could to talk to him. It confused you how curious you were about the mysterious boy. You didn’t know why you wanted to break through that barrier of his. All you knew was that you saw it as a challenge and you loved a good challenge.

You sat by a small lake with Sehun as the rest of the boys played in the water. It was the one day where all of them had the afternoon off and you got to spend some time together as a group. Suho was doing laps in the deepest end of the lake. He looked like he was training for the Olympics or something of the sort. The other three boys were messing around in the shallow end, playing like little kids that haven’t been to the beach before. Kai on the other hand rested under a tree about 10 metres away from you and Sehun. You weren’t sure how he could sleep with the amount of noise the derp squad was making.

“Take this, puny people!” Chanyeol yelled before swishing his arms through the water, creating a mini tsunami that engulfed both Baekhyun and D.O. as they screamed. They soon resurfaced spluttering ‘angrily’ at Chanyeol.

“Oh yeah?! Y-you think you can gang up on us with your big arms?!” Baekhyun turned to D.O. with a determined look. “C’mon D.O. if we join forces, together we can take him on!”

D.O. smiled evilly with Baekhyun before turning to Chanyeol, tapping his fingers together in a very Mr Burns manner. “Prepare to be swallowed whole, Dumbo!”

The boys let out a rather pathetic war cry before attacking Chanyeol with the biggest wave they could create with their little arms. The wave barely made Chanyeol stumble but he played along and purposely fell under the water, splashing his arms around pretending to drown.

“NO! BROUGHT DOWN BY MIDGETS! HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN TO THE AWESOME PARK CHANYEOL!” He yelled as D.O. and Baekhyun high fived each other, screaming cheers of success.

You giggled and turned to Sehun who was weaving a chain of peach coloured flowers.

“They’re such cute idiots.” You stated, still giggling. Your smiled widened when you saw Sehun biting his tongue with concentration as he put the finishing touches on his flower chain. He nodded as he fastened the chain together and put the flower necklace around your neck. Satisfied with how it looked on you, he cracked a small approving smile.

You looked down at the handmade necklace and saw how beautifully woven the stems were. He must’ve had a lot of practice to make it so perfectly. You smiled and squished his cheeks together causing him to pout cutely. Letting out a light hearted laugh you let his cheeks go and played with one of the petals on the necklace.

“Thanks Sehunnie! It’s beautiful!” Sehun scratched the back of his neck shyly, a light blush forming on his cheeks. A loud booming of laughter came from the boys as you saw the derp squad ganging up on their Olympic swimming leader.

“Sehun, do you want to go play too?” Sehun immediately shook his head a little too quickly and you could tell that he was just saying that because he didn’t want you to be lonely. You laughed at his all too serious face and gave him a light push towards the lake. “Go on, I know you’re dying to go and splash Suho too.”

Sehun gave you an ‘are-you-sure?’ look and you nodded. The boy was the youngest; he shouldn’t have to babysit some chick pretending to be an angel. He deserved to have some fun too.

“Go on, go on. I’ll be fine!” You pointed your thumb in the direction where the tanned boy was sleeping. “I’ve got Kai over there to go annoy if I get bored. Highly doubt I will though with the show those boys are putting on. Now go and jump on Suho for me.”

Sehun hugged your arm tightly with a smile before running off to join the others. Just like you asked him to, he ran into the water towards Suho and belly flopped on him causing an explosion of laughter from the other three. You smiled at how adorable Sehun was and couldn’t help but wonder what he would sound like if he were able to talk.

You looked over to where Kai was resting. His back had begun to heal and he wasn’t wearing his leaf bandage anymore. You were glad that it was starting to look better and he didn’t seem to be showing any signs of pain. You were sure that he was well enough to be playing with the others.

What a lazy cow. Free time to spend with his friends and he decides to sleep under a tree.

You got up from where you were sitting and walked over to where Kai was sleeping. You sat next to him and played with the grass under you while you watched him sleep. His face looked so relaxed and serene while he slept. His usual stress lines and creases were no longer visible and his tense aura that he usually gave out was replaced with a more peaceful one. You almost didn’t want to wake him because you knew if you did, his annoying y self would awaken with him. But you were bored and fighting with him entertained you—plus you felt kind of creepy watching him like this. Pulling out a stiff blade of grass, you began to poke him in the face with it.

After a few twitches of his nose and a couple cat-like bats with his hands, his eyes opened with a small jump. His brow wrinkled as his expression reverted to its usual grumpy demeanour. He didn’t get up from his position, he just turned his head and gave you the biggest greasy.

“What?” He snapped, clearly not happy that you disturbed him.

“I’m lonely.” You whined.

Kai rolled his eyes and let out a frustrated sigh.

“And bored.” You continued.

Kai rolled his eyes a second time and propped his head up with his hands, lying on them like a pillow.

“Then go play with the others.” He said closing his eyes again to resume his sleeping. You poked him in the face again with the blade of grass making him open his eyes again. He swiftly snapped his head to the side, grabbed the blade of glass between his teeth and pulled it out of your hands. And then he ate it. You stared at him, slightly disgusted that he just ate grass but you let it go. Eating weird things was slowly becoming normal to you after a week of living here.

“I don’t want to play with the others…” You looked at the five boys who were now taking turns in throwing Sehun around in the water. Truth was that you really did want to play with them but you still didn’t know how to swim and after what you went through with the plane crash, it heightened your fear of the water.

Kai looked at you and studied your expression. He noticed the fear and embarrassment written all over your face and he smirked.

“You don’t know how to swim.”

You snapped your head around and falsely defended yourself.

“N-no! I can swim!” Kai snorted at your guilty face. “I-I just don’t want to!”

Kai closed his eyes yet again, the smirk remaining on his face.

“You can’t swim.”

“I…“ You let out a defeated sigh and ran your fingers through the grass. There was no point trying to convince him you could when you knew it was clearly written all over your face that you couldn’t.

Wanting to change a subject away from you, you decided to ask Kai about Sehun’s inability to talk.

“Sehun? I don’t really know much about him to be honest. He’s kinda scared of me.” Kai answered.

Heh, I’m not really surprized there.

“All I know is that he used to be able to talk when he was little.” Kai spoke with his eyes closed hoping that you’d get the message to leave him alone so he could sleep.

“What?! Sehun used to be able to talk?” You were surprized with this new piece of information. “What happened? Why can’t he talk now?”

Kai let out an exaggerated sigh hoping that you would finally get the message that he didn’t want to talk to you anymore. You stuck your tongue out at him even though you knew he couldn’t see you with his eyes closed.

“All I heard was that when he was a kid, he made friends with a boy from EXO-M and was sneaking around to see him. One day when they were together something happened to that boy. I think he died. Weeks after the incident, the only word Sehun would say was the EXO-M boy’s name. Eventually he stopped talking completely.” Kai rolled over, turning his back towards you. “That’s all I got, now would you leave me alone to sleep?”

You blinked furiously trying to rid your eyes of the tears that had built up. Although Kai’s story telling skills , the point of the story was still there. And it made you incredibly sad that little Sehun had to go through something like that.

Looking back at the lake, you saw Sehun on Chanyeol’s back laughing as Chanyeol spun around and eventually fell backwards into the water.

It’s good that he’s left the past in the past and is allowing himself to have fun with his new friends. But I guess time can’t always heal everything since he’s still unable to talk.

Wanting to clear your mind, you decided to take a small walk. You told yourself you wouldn’t be long; no one will even notice that you left.

You walked through the jungle for roughly 15 minutes before deciding to make your way back to the lake. Looking at all the pretty trees and bushes allowed you to clear your head of the sadness you started to feel after hearing Sehun’s story from Kai. You found your soft spot for sad stories really annoying sometimes because after hearing one, you just wanted to curl up into a ball and cry your heart out.

And there was no way you were going to do that in front of Kai.

You were pretty confident backtracking your steps. You were sure you knew how to get back to the lake. After all, you did only walk in a straight line following the dirt path, so all you had to do was turn around and walk in another straight line, following the same dirt path.

You walked…

…and walked…

…and walked.

You turned a corner.

…and another corner.

“Where did all these corners come from?! This path was straight when I first walked down here!”

Looking around you, you saw that your surroundings were very unfamiliar. The trees in this area were denser and there was less light shining through the trees. You saw a patch of red bushes with blue thorns and yellow flowers. It looked like some kind of alien plant.

“Okay, I would have definitely noticed that if I had passed it before.” The palms of your hands started to dampen as you realized that you were lost. “Where the hell am I…?”

You walked aimlessly through the trees hoping to somehow find your way back to the boys. You took different turns and followed your instincts, hoping that the directions your conscience was telling you would lead you to where you had to be.

You suddenly stopped in your tracks and you let out a puff of air in disbelief.

You’ve got to be kidding me. Damn you brain, why did I listen to your directions. You should’ve just stayed where you were and waited for the boys to come find you!

You had walked all the way to the border—the split in EXO Island that divided EXO-K and EXO-M. Walking up to the fence made of tree branches, you hoisted yourself up to sit on it. You swung your legs over so you were facing EXO-M direction. You laughed.

“I’m in EXO-M territory!” You swung your legs back around to face EXO-K direction.

“Now I’m back in EXO-K!” You then sat in a horseback position on the fence so one leg was on either side of the fence.

“Now I’m on both at the same time.” You laughed at your idiocy and made a mental note to limit the amount of time you spent with the derp squad. Being an idiot was obviously contagious.

You jumped back onto EXO-K’s side and took one last look towards the EXO-M territory. You felt the urge to go exploring on the M side, but you decided that you’d leave that for another day. You walked back towards the path that you came from with the intentions to try and find the K boys again, when suddenly you heard a snap from over the fence.

You turned around with a jump and scanned the trees for the source of the snap.

“H-hello?” Your voice quivered as you spoke but your face instantly brightened as a very familiar dark haired boy appeared from the other side of the fence.

“Hey! Oh my gosh, it’s you! You’re the boy that helped me! You ran away so quickly that day that I didn’t even get your name!”

You saw the boy scrutinizing your appearance as he checked out your new clothing and the flower necklace around your neck. He hissed and his eyes threw daggers at you.

“You’re one of them.” He growled taking a step backwards, his stance slightly crouched as if ready to pounce.

Okay, so as expected he doesn’t seem too fond of EXO-K…

“Well actually, not really. They just took me in when I arrived here from the uh…what do you call it…the beyond?” You noted the change in the boy’s expression when you mentioned ‘the beyond’. A look of awe and happiness overcame him and you couldn’t help but internally swoon at the adorable smile that formed on his face.

“So my first instincts from the day we met were right…” You heard him whisper. “…it is you.”

You wanted to question what he meant by that last sentence but he kept talking and didn’t give you the chance.

“You shouldn’t be with EXO-K.” He stepped up to the fence and reached his hand out. “Come with me, we will look after you much better on our side!”

You remembered all the bad things the K boys said about EXO-M. They said they were heartless and conniving. But you really didn’t see anything bad in the eyes of the boy in front of you. He looked just as kind hearted as EXO-K.

“What’s your name?” You asked him, tired of mentally referring to him as ‘the dark haired boy’.

He hesitated for a bit before answering.

“Tao. My name is Tao.”

You started to walk up to the fence.

“Well Tao, let me tell you that you’ve got EXO-K all wron—ow!“ You stepped on a large rock and your ankle buckled. You fell to the ground and felt the pain shooting up your leg. You tried to move your ankle but you couldn’t. You ankle was well and thoroughly twisted.

“A-are you okay?” A worried sounding Tao yelled over the fence. You looked up at him, your eyes pleading for help.

“N-no…my ankle. I think I’ve s-sprained it.” You felt tears trickle down your cheeks—the pain was unbearable. “T-Tao…help…please?”

Tao didn’t know what to do. He wanted to help you but you were still on EXO-K territory. He was not allowed to put even one foot onto K-land. He panicked as he watched you cry while grabbing your ankle. He had no choice; he had to jump over to get you back to his tribe where he can get the healer to look at your leg.

He quickly jumped over and ran to your side.

“I-I’m going to pick you up okay? I’ll take you to Lay. He’ll look at your leg.” Tao bent down and put his arms around you.

“N-no, if I go with you EXO-K will get worried and…T-Tao wait. No, l-listen to me!”

But before you could protest any more, an arrow was shot out of nowhere and pierced Tao’s shoulder. He let out a wild scream as his body was thrown backwards with the impact. You face grew pale as you saw the blood pour out.

“Tao!”

EXO-K came rushing out from within the trees, Sehun with an archers bow in hand. D.O. and Kai tackled Tao and tried to tie him up but Tao kept thrashing about trying to get free.

Baekhyun and Chanyeol ran up to you to see you crying, your ankle swollen. Chanyeol let out a wolf-like growl and with the handle of his spear he hit Tao across the head. Tao fell limp, dazed from Chanyeol’s blow. He looked at you with tears in his eyes and muttered “you tricked me” before he out.

Baekhyun put an arm under your back and the other under your knees, lifting you up bridal style. He cradled you in his arms while your head whispering “it’s okay now”.  Sehun ran up to you and Baekhyun and rested his head on top of yours. He felt responsible for this happening. If only he hadn’t left you to play in the water, you would have never wandered off on your own.

“B-Baekhyun…don’t hurt Tao.” You said through your tears, finally able to find your voice. “He didn’t hurt me, he was helping me…”

“He made you cry, Angel. Your foot is hurt. How is that helping you?” Baekhyun replied, anger in his voice.

D.O. and Kai were finally able to tie Tao’s hands and feet together. They picked Tao’s limp body up with the help of Chanyeol and Suho and began to carry him back to the village. You looked up and let out a loud sob when you saw Tao passed out in their arms.

“N-no! T-Tao! What did you do to him! He’s not a bad guy!”

“That’s what he made you believe, Angel. We told you before, EXO-M can’t be trusted, especially an EXO-M warrior.” You cried harder at the fact that no one would listen to you. You remembered the betrayed look on Tao’s face just before he passed out.

“You tricked me.”

You sobbed into Baekhyun’s neck, unable to form words anymore. The pain of your ankle and the pain of seeing Tao like that was too much. You were 100% sure Tao was good. And now he’s hurt because of you.

You sat alone in your teepee looking grumpily at your bandaged leg. Baekhyun had taken you to the witch doctor JYP to get fixed up because D.O. was busy with dealing with the ‘trespasser’. You found out that both D.O. and Baekhyun were actually studying under JYP to become healers for the tribe. You thought D.O. was the healer but turns out he was just an apprentice.

No one had stopped to listen to what you had to say about what happened. They just all assumed Tao tricked you into thinking he was a good guy. They took Tao to what they called ‘the dungeon’ and have been with him this whole time. It frightened you to think what they could be doing to him right now. All you knew was that if they did anything to Tao to cost him his life, you were moving to EXO-M.

You heard chatter coming from outside your teepee so you peeped out to see Elder Soo talking with Kai.

“Suho tells me that you were the last to talk to the Angel from the Beyond.” Elder Soo let out a sigh. “I’m sorry Kai, but I’m going to have to ask you to stay well away from Angel from now on.”

You blinked your eyes in astonishment. They weren’t seriously blaming Kai for what happened were they? It was your choice to go for a walk. Your fault for getting lost. Your fault for rolling your ankle. They were being utterly ridiculous.

Elder Soo handed Kai a set of keys.

“I’m giving you duty over the trespasser from EXO-M. Keep the keys safe.” Kai nodded robotically. “One more unfortunate incident like this Kai and I’ll be forced to take action.”

Meanwhile, in a small cave labelled ‘Dungeon’…

“Speak, M-warrior! Why did you hurt our Angel?!” Chanyeol held his spear to Tao’s throat as Tao shook with fear. He was knelt on his knees, his arms and legs chained to the wall. He could only move within half a metre radius from where he was. Tears pricked at his eyes but he held them back trying to be brave.

“I-I didn’t hurt her. She slipped and fell. I was just trying to help her. But it seems I was tricked. She was just a pawn in your plan wasn’t she? You sneaky bastards used her to lure me in so you could capture me. I’m so stupid.”

D.O. punched Tao in the face.

“You’re right. You are stupid.”

“They’re gonna come for me!” Tao glared at the EXO-K members around him. “When they realize I haven’t been home in a few days, they’ll come straight here.”

“Good! Let them come. Then maybe we can have a little chat about what you guys are doing to our land!” It was Baekhyun’s time to punch Tao in the face. Tao smirked under the pain.

“Duizhang won’t let you get away with hurting his youngest warrior. He’ll get you for this!”

Sehun glared at Tao, feeling extra rivalry at the fact that they were both the youngest in their warrior groups. Tao returned the glare before he was struck in the face once more, this time by Kai who had just arrived at the scene.

“Gag him and let him rot until his ‘friends’ come to save him.”

And with that, Suho tied a cloth around Tao’s mouth and they left him all alone in the dark cave. Tao felt dizzy from the amount of blood he had lost and was still losing from the wound in his shoulder. He let out a whimper and let his tears roll freely as he slipped into unconsciousness.
