Ch. 1: The Sounds of Despair

Voice of an Angel

This is the second week Amber has been in the hospital and has been bedridden since she got in. Her brother Donghae have been pacing back and forth in the hallway outside of Amber’s room worrying that she might not wake up again as he waits for the doctors to tell him when he can go in while they are doing their round of check up. She’s the only family he got left and if anything was to happen to her, Donghae won’t know what to do. Donghae calms himself down before appearing in front of his sister not wanting to worry Amber even in her sleep. There Amber was still lying in bed asleep since the accident.

The injury Amber has is a hard hit to the head, other than that she have minor bruises and scratches. Upon arriving to the hospital Amber have to endure a six hour surgery. Now only time can tell if Amber would ever wake up from her coma. Everyday Donghae would come and visit Amber to talk to her. Studies shows that talking to a person in a coma is good for them and it helps the person in a coma heal faster. Sometimes it even brings miraculous recoveries to those in a coma. Still, everything will show in time. There’s no exact way to find out if a person will or will not come out of a coma.

Pulling up a chair so he could sit beside Amber’s bed to monitor how she’s doing for himself, the words of the doctors is not enough to keep him calm. They said she will come out of her coma with no defined answer. With a gentle touch of Donghae’s hand as he caresses Amber’s forehead and cheeks, he can feel that Amber is still alive but is currently in a coma state. “I’m sorry.” He said feeling ashamed he couldn’t do anything to help Amber, the only thing he could do is wait. “If only I was there to protect you.” Hold onto her right hand enclosing it with both of his hands while staring at her with sad eyes. “You use to have long and beautiful hair. Too bad, you were stunning in long hair. Even your oppa finds it hard to fight off those men chasing after you.”

He sat beside Amber staring at her in hope that if he kept his eyes on her, maybe, just maybe he could see Amber wake up from her coma. While still holding onto Amber’s hand, Donghae leans and rested his head on the side of the bed. For hours he would sit by Amber’s side, it wasn’t long until fatigue brings him to sleep.

Amber’s right hand twitches for a few seconds. She can hear her brother calling for her in her sleep. Like a voice coming to interrupt her dream. Her last moment of consciousness replays itself in her mind. The sound of car screeching as they moves at an incredible speed, people were screaming, and the last person she saw before she lost consciousness was Henry. Time slowed down during that moment. Fearing about what happen next Amber finally woke up.

With eyes wide open, Amber found herself in a foreign place. It didn’t take her long before she realize she was in the hospital and with no doubt, the one holding her right hand is her own older brother Donghae. Amber found it hard to sit up as she did her best to pull herself to sit upright. Her whole body felt sore and dry.

“Oppa.” Amber tries to say but her voice was weak making her sound coarse and raspy. She haven’t used her body since the accident. Again Amber attempts while shaking her brother to wake up, “Oppa, don’t sleep here or you’ll get sick.”

“No.” Donghae innocently whine. “Five more minutes.” It only took him a few seconds before he realize Amber was finally awake. Though he is still exhausted he did his best to look awake. “Amber.” Donghae said happily. “You’re finally awake. Don’t go and make your oppa worry.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t talk.” Donghae said as he realizes talking was probably hard for Amber right now. “Just let me talk. I can talk for the both of us. Just nod or shake your head. Okay?” He handed Amber a bottle of water.

“Where’s Henry?” Amber said with worried eyes.

“He is still recovering and won’t be able to see you.” Seeing that Amber wants to respond to him, Donghae quickly says, “And no, you can’t visit him. You have to get better. The faster you get better, the sooner you’ll get to see him. Okay?”

Amber smiles and nodded obediently despite wanting to get out of bed and visiting Henry immediately. She couldn’t help but have the feeling of being helpless to the current situation.

The truth is Donghae isn’t able to get in contact with Henry’s family and he has no information about Henry’s current health status. There was no way he would tell Amber about this. All he could do is give Amber some hope so that Amber could get into a full recovery before he would even attempt to tell Amber anything. He already tried a few time to contact Henry’s family to learn about his current health situation but it was already clear, they blame Amber for the cause of Henry’s accident.

The whereabouts of Henry is that he is currently in a different hospital and is still in a critical state. His injuries were far worse than Amber. Not only does he have a head injury, he also has a broken right arm, broken ribs, and two broken legs. It was no surprised Henry’s family wanted to put the blame on Amber. The drunk driver that was involved in the crash died at another car crash the week after his car crash with Henry and Amber.

It all happens when Henry drove the car into the intersection when the stop light was green and at that moment a car from the intersection to his right came out of nowhere pushing his car into the path of an oncoming large truck. There was no time to move or maneuver their way out. This accident was on the news for two weeks before Henry’s family could stop the news from talking about the tragic accident that sent nearly twenty-five people to the hospital. The drunk driver only has some minor scratches and five others were in critical condition.

Three weeks after Amber had woken up she finally made a full recovery. All that is left for her is to rebuild her strength. This time Donghae was able to find out some information about Henry and the news isn’t great for Amber to hear about just after she recovered so soon.

“It’s time for a celebration.” Donghae said.

“We have to wait for Henry before we celebrate.” Amber said.

“Are you going to grow your hair out again for him?”

“No. I like my new short hair. It’s different from my usual long hair.” Not only was Amber changing her hair style, her fashion sense have change into something more boyish.

“Well there’s something I have to tell you about Henry. We need to sit down for this.” Donghae could already feel the pressure. They head down to small café for something to drink as Donghae prepares his thoughts on what to say to Amber.

From what Donghae learned about Henry is that he just came out of his coma five days ago. The bad news is he has amnesia. It as if the car crashed had wiped his mind clean of any memory people that were in his life before the accident. Everything was already hard enough with his family having to reintroducing him to his own family. They have made it clear that it is best to cut ties between Henry and Amber. As much as Donghae wants for Amber to be happy, it was probably best that Amber leave Henry.

Donghae stop for a moment and said, “I’m sorry.”

With those words Amber could think nothing but the worst that could have happened to Henry. She couldn’t even muster up the energy to ask the next question. Amber folded her hands on her lap as she was shaken with fear thinking that Henry could have pass away and leaving her permanently. feels dry and now she lost her appetite.

“Amber, I’m really sorry but Henry is no longer with us.” Donghae said. This wasn’t a whole lie. Henry is not as he used to be.

“When?” Amber said in a calm manner but she couldn’t hide the fact that the news has shaken her so much she can’t stop. The silence only angers Amber. “Tell me when. I want to at least visit his grave.”

“That’s not possible. Henry’s family won’t allow it.” Donghae said as calm as he could while trying to calm Amber down. “This is a hard hit for his family and seeing you will make it even harder for them to let him go.”

“I…” Amber mumbles. Hearing Donghae’s words hit Amber harder than her wanting to see Henry. “If that’s what they say then it is best that I never see them again.”

“You should…” It was hard for Donghae to tell Amber a lie as big as this one. “You should let him go.”

There was no confirmation that Henry would regain his memories back but Henry was already stressed enough. The fact the he’s learning that he had forgotten his whole life and that all the new faces he have to memorize are his family, this was causing him a lot of stress already. Learning another important face would only bring Henry more stress. Donghae couldn’t stomach the pain of Amber trying to regain a love that might never come back. Henry was already a different person from the moment he woke up from his coma.

That look Amber gave Donghae as tears streak down her cheeks was already breaking his heart. “I’m sorry Amber. There’s nothing I can do for you. As your older brother I can only be your bearer of bad news.”

“I’m tired. Let’s go home.” Amber said.

That night Henry wanders out of his hospital room to seek out some peace and quiet from his day. His whole day was about his family trying to make him remember about a past he no longer knew. Now he wants some time away from people and spends some time to himself. Henry walks with a black long coat to cover his hospital clothes. Wandering into the nearby park, he hears the sound of young girl singing a love song. The odd thing about it is that no matter how beautiful it sounds, Henry couldn’t help but get the feeling that the girl singing it was sad. There’s one more odd thing about the song, it sounds familiar when Henry knows this is the first time he heard it, at least since he woke up from his coma. He has no idea if he heard it before then.

When Henry walks closer to the voice, all he saw was a boy walking away and the voice have disappeared when he got there. Walking back to his room that night, he couldn’t forget the voice and song he heard that night.
