Getting Ready to Go
His Voice...You look at the framed certificate hanging proudly on the wall in the hallway. You remember when you had been proud as well. But that had been seven years ago. The certificate read:
~South Korean National Conference for Girls' Swimming~
______ is recognized on this nineteenth of October in 2007 for setting the new record for the 500 yard stroke at five minutes and twenty-nine seconds.
It was signed by the president of the country at the time and your school's principal. You look at the pictures beside it. One was of you and your family at the pool in 2007. You, your mom, and dad. The next framed picture was of you holding your diploma in your red graduation gown from your senior year of high school. You took a step back and looked at the pictures together.
Both had been great accomplishments for you, but the biggest difference had been that in the graduation photo, you were deaf. After you had broken the country's swimming record, you had had a major ear infection that had worsened over time. Eventually both ears became silent and you were deaf by graduation. You felt someone put an arm around your shoulders. You turn and see your mom. "I'm still really proud of you. I couldn't have a better daughter," she said proudly. You read her lips and smiled.
