The next class went by without a problem, but the damage for the day had already been done. At lunch, I ventured toward the forest at the back of the school. Maybe nature can help me feel better. I was 20 steps deep into the trees when the boy who liked to smile appeared behind a tree. “Stop doing that,” I whispered, a hand over my heart. “Why? Does it make your heart race?” he asked with an amused expression. “Yeah, out of nervousness!” He just grinned and moved to stand beside me. “So where are we going?” “We?” I raised my eyebrows at him. “Don’t you have anything better to do?” He shrugged. “It’s the first day of school. What could I possibly do that’s more interesting than being with you?” he asked, looking at me slyly. I looked at him, my expression screaming you’re-unbelievable! “Relax, I don’t have a girlfriend if you’re worried about getting chased by fork sticks.” I shook my head and decided to ignore him, walking on ahead. “Wait,” he said, grabbing my hand, “if we are going somewhere, then we’re heading the wrong way.” Without waiting for my response, he began dragging me to the opposite direction. A gazillion trees later, we came face to face with an abandoned gazebo. Vines and flowers clung to its pillars, making it look like a part of the forest. “What is this place?” “Lee Eunae, welcome to our hideout,” he said proudly, gesturing toward the whole place. “Our?” “Mine and Kris’.” Kris? Now, where have I heard that name before? “So what am I doing here then?” “You’re here to sing.” “Sing?” I repeated stupidly. Somehow, after the incident, I would suddenly get nervous whenever I hear the word sing. He led me to the center of the gazebo. “Look around,” he said, sweeping his hands toward the trees, the flowers, and the beautiful sky. I did. “Now,” he moved closer. “Close your eyes,” he whispered in my ear. “No way,” I managed to say despite the shiver that ran down my spine. He chuckled, his breath brushing the edges of my cheek. “Don’t you trust me?” “Hmm. Let’s see,” I said, pretending to think deeply. “You were in a pretty suspicious situation when I first met you. You give off this flirty aura along with that charming grin. And now, you’ve abducted a random girl to your secret hideout,” I said matter-of-factly, facing him. “Now what does that tell us? Should I trust you?” His favorite chuckle escaped his lips again. “Innocent. Honest. Hmm, I’m liking you more and more,” he mused. “There you go again,” I noted, sighing. “I’m not here to play games with you.” As much as I didn’t want to admit, I could sense this guy had more to him than all this smile-shrug business. Taking in my serious face, he gave me a small smile. “Don’t worry, I’m not here to do that. I just want to help you,” he said earnestly. “I want to know why they put you in the Black House when you can’t properly sing in front of an audience.” Ouch, that stings. “Why? Who are you?” “Thought you’d never asked,” he said, taking a step back. “Lu Han’s the name and helping beautiful girls is my game,” to which I snorted while he just chuckled, “and, I’m Black House’ dorm leader, officially known as the deer.” “The deer?” I echoed, chortling. He ignored me. “Wait, did you say Black’s dorm leader?” “Yes. So you see, I’m a pretty prominent person. No need to be all suspicious with me. Just trust me, and sing. I want to hear you.” I sighed, deciding to tell him the truth. “I can’t. Looking at all those people, it’s like I forgot how to.” “You want to fix this, don’t you?” he asked, looking at me seriously. “Yes.” He grinned. “Then close your eyes, and I’ll cast my special magic on you.” I looked at him warily but decided to obey. If he was planning to do any funny business, he co
