Kyungsoo was that wide-eyed boy full of innocence and kindness. Kai was the sparky, talented dancer, passionate and driven to excel. The couple was a match made in heaven, and everyone around them thought so.

                Kai lived with his single mother, who wanted nothing more than for her only son to find the one he loves. Kai found him when he was in middle school. Kyungsoo was never his first choice. Kai always thought he was into girls, until that one day he tasted Kyungsoo’s freshly-made pie, the very first he had ever made. It was like love at first taste.

                More than anything, it was the budding chef himself that tasted the best. Every time Kai kissed those plump pink lips, he could taste caramel and coffee, sweetness and tart, fireworks and bubbly cider and all other things he loved. Kyungsoo’s kiss was the best thing ever, and Kai knew from the first kiss it was the last and only thing he will ever want to taste.

                Kyungsoo didn’t exactly fall in love with Kai the way Kai did. He actually needed some convincing. It took several dates and a few kisses for him to truly fall in love with him. It was Luhan who had cajoled Kyungsoo into going out with him.

                “Just go out with him for homecoming! What’s it going to kill?” Luhan tried, nudging his best friend.

                “I already told you I don’t feel for him that way!”

                “You never know unless you try! Who knows this could turn out to be one of the best things ever? Can you imagine how it would have ended if I didn’t give Sehun a chance with me?”

                “I find that awfully hard to believe. You were smitten with the kid!”

                “Okay, fine, bad example. Just go, will you?” Luhan started begging.

                “Fine fine fine, but I’m only doing this for you.” Kyungsoo glared at Luhan, fixing up his white tuxedo that he rented for homecoming. Kyungsoo, Lay and Luhan was at Luhan’s house preparing for homecoming together. The minute the doorbell rang, Luhan’s parents answered the door expectantly, greeting two very handsome men at their door.

                “Come in boys! Sehun you look lovely today!” Luhan’s mother gushed at the tall blonde boy. Sehun thanked Luhan’s parents and looked at Suho who was actively engaged in a political conversation with Luhan’s father.

                “LUHAN!! YOUR BOYFRIEND IS HERE!!” Luhan’s mother yelled up the stairs. “I can never get tired of saying that.” She giggled, watching her son bounce down the steps.

                “I’m coming!!” Luhan jumped down the steps and plunged into Sehun’s arms. “You look sooooo handsome tonight!”

                “You don’t look so bad yourself hyung,” Sehun teased, kissing the tip of Luhan’s nose, but Luhan pulled him in for a full and proper kiss. Lay and Kyungsoo rolled their eyes instinctively. Typical reaction to Hunhan PDA.

                “Suho? What are you doing here? I thought you went to pick up Jessica.” Kyungsoo asked, staring at the handsome student body president.

                “I’m meeting Jessica there. In the mean time, I came to Lay.”

                “M…me?” Lay stuttered. There’s another one with a secret unrequited crush on a certain guardian of EXO.

                “Yeah, you can’t yourself, and if I didn’t insist you would have stayed home buried in Quantum Physics.” Suho held out his arm and Lay hooked onto it appreciatively.

                “Where’s Kai then?” Kyungsoo asked. He figured the guy with the crush on him should come pick him up.

                “Don’t you know? He’s the performer at the dance, so he got there early.” Suho said, lifting his arm towards Kyungsoo. “This arm is free. It’s yours; cause I figure Sehun wouldn’t share.”

                “Damn right you are,” Sehun smirked, cuddling to a clingy Luhan on his arm.

                “I bet I’ve got the best looking boyfriend ever.” Luhan self-praised himself and Sehun.

                “You’ve also got the snarkiest, you e.” Kyungsoo teased.

                The group made their way to the danced, where Chen, the troll of the school played MC to the event. Kyungsoo had spent literally the whole night in a corner with glasses of punch, just waiting for Kai. Where is that bastard?

                Just then, a familiar tune came out. Into Your World, Kyungsoo whispered. And right there on stage, was Kai, dancing to the beautiful tune. His movements swayed so gracefully, every step so swift and beautiful. At the end, Kai blew a kiss and caught Kyungsoo’s eye. He smiled at the wide eyed boy who was too busy staring at Kai to realize his mouth was hanging open.

                “Hey fish boy, close the mouth before a fly enters.”

                “Shut up Bacon and keep dancing with Creepyeol.”

                “Fine.” Bacon sulked as he danced to a corner with Chanyeol. Kai came down from the stage and walked towards Kyungsoo.

                “You like it?” he asked expectantly.

                “You were awesome.” He answered breathlessly.

                “I’m even better with a partner.” He smirked, holding Kyungsoo’s hand. And on that night, Kyungsoo was swept off his feet. Literally. But his heart was so taken. That was it for him. Love at first dance.

                Kyungsoo’s passion for cooking took him to culinary class in college, where he was the star student. Kai took up dance and musical theatre. He was so good, that he was actually hired as a part time dance teacher. Now, he works there full time and even considered opening one of his own.

                Everything was beautiful in Kaisoo land. They were so in love with each other, and it felt like nothing could ruin it.

                They were dead wrong.

                One day, Kyungsoo started to feel lethargic. He felt tired on days, and inability to breathe sometimes. The biggest scare came when he went to the bathroom. There was blood in his urine.

                Kyungsoo wasted no time in getting himself checked. The doctor came back in the room, his head shaking at the medical report.

                “Doctor, am I okay?” Kyungsoo asked urgently.

                “I’m sorry Mr. Do, but according to the test, you have acute kidney failure.”

                And that was it. Kyungsoo felt his life force drain away from him. His tiny hands trembled in fear and horror at the news received. It couldn’t be…this couldn’t happen.

                “You will need medication and dialysis from now on. Hopefully we can prevent the situation from worsening. If not…”

                “If not what?” Kyungsoo pressed on.

                “I suggest you find yourself a donor. You can die from this.” The doctor said. “I will help you put in a request, but its better not to get our hopes up.”

                “I understand.” Kyungsoo nodded. It’s not easy to find a donor these days. With so much people with acute kidney failure, it would take ages before it would reach him on the waiting list.

                Kyungsoo walked home alone after that, but he didn’t go home. He went to the park. He walked alone, watching happy couples pass him by, happy families and their pets and even old people squabbling on the benches.

                Can I have a normal life? Will I be able to marry Kai? Settle down and have a family? Squabble like old people on who changes whose diaper? Will I have a future?

                Kyungsoo sat down on a bench and cried his eyes out. He doesn’t even know for how long. Tears of disappointment, anger and sadness all spilled out. More than anything, it was tears of fear. Fear for his life, fear for the treatment, fear of losing Kai, fear of isolation…

                It didn’t take long for him to feel out of breath again. Kyungsoo fell down to the ground, gasping for air. He could feel his life drifting slowly. He really didn’t have much time left.

                He walked home with a tear-stained face, ready to go home and sleep. Maybe when he wakes up, all of this would have never happened. Maybe it’ll be a dream.

                “Kyungsoo?” Kyungsoo whipped his head to see Kai looking at him, his hands clutching the medical report.

                “How…how did you…”

                “The hospital sent me this. I was listed as your next of kin, remember?” Kyungsoo secretly listed Kai as his next of kin once when he was young, so that Kai would always be informed if Kyungsoo was in trouble. So Kai knew.

                “Kai, I…”Kai didn’t give him any chance to speak and he hugged the boy tight.

                “Kyungsoo…”

                “Kai…”

                “You’re not alone, okay. We can get through this. We’ll find a donor, I can pay for your medical treatments. We will save you.”

                “Kai…” Kyungsoo sobbed into Kai’s embrace, hugging like his life depended on it.

                The tuckered boy was tucked in by Kai. Kyungsoo was so worn and weak; he could barely keep his eyes open. Kai tucked a strand of hair behind his lover’s ear and whispered softly.

                “I will save you. I will not let you leave me.” Kai let his tears fall on his long-time sweetheart’s face. He will not let Kyungsoo die, even if that means he must die first.

A/N: I have to admit it pains me to write about something like this. The symptoms and treatments for kidney failure might not be accurate, so don't take them seriously. Also, I'll be away for a while for Lunar New Year. Gotta see my family and celebrate!
