13th Birthday
Best Friends
July 18th.
Today was a very special day. Taemin had woken up that morning, smiling immediately after opening his eyes and realizing the date. He jumped out of bed, quickly changing into his favorite jeans and shirt then topping it off with a blue hat.
He skipped down the stairs, smiling as he smelled the delicious scent of hot cinnamon rolls. He bounded into the kitchen, chiming a good morning to his parents. His smile widened when he saw that his parents were in a good mood.
“Good morning, baby! Eat up!” his mother said cheerfully, setting a plate with a savory looking cinnamon roll on the table for her son.
After eating a delicious breakfast and a birthday greeting from his father, Taemin helped his mother with the dishes then ran outside to wait for Kai. It didn’t take very long for Kai to get there. His mother’s car pulled up in front of the house, barely making a complete stop before Kai jumped out carrying a big, wrapped box topped with a bow.
“Happy birthday, Taemin hyung!” Kai screamed loudly, gently placing the gift on the ground so he could hug his best friend.
“Thanks for coming, Kai. C’mon, let’s go inside!” Taemin said, motioning for Kai to follow him. Kai did so after picking the gift back up.
Inside, Kai placed the present on the table and Taemin was closely inspecting the wrapping.
“I want to open it,” he said, eyes hungry. What kid doesn’t like presents?
“Later, hyung. After the cake!”
“But that’s not until tonight!” Taemin whined funnily, leaning on Kai’s shoulder. Kai just laughed at him before pulling the birthday boy into the living room. He opened the bottom drawers of the entertainment center, pulling out two controllers.
“Let’s play a game.”
And the two played—for two hours. After an hour, Taemin’s parents and Kai’s mother joined them, taking a seat on the empty couch to watch them.
Taemin was happy he had his favorite people with him for his birthday. He couldn’t have asked for anything better.
They all spent the day playing video games and watching movies. It wasn’t anything really special but Taemin had requested they do this. He didn’t want a huge party or anything, but to just do what he normally did with Kai.
It was nice.
By the time dinner rolled around, the two boys were starving (Kai especially, since he was a bottomless pit). Taemin’s mother had made kimchi stew, one of Taemin’s favorite foods. They all ate together, talking about various things.
“So…can we open presents now?” Taemin asked cutely, showing his aegyo to get everyone to say yes. It worked, the women cooing over his adorable face. Kai and Taemin’s father snickered, finding it amusing.
Taemin’s parent’s gift came first. It was green gift bag seeming stuffed with tissue paper. Taemin excited pulled the tissue paper out, rolling each sheet into a ball and throwing them at Kai, and eventually reached the bottom, revealing a sketch book, colored pencils and pastels.
“Thank you!” Taemin chimed, happy about his new art supplies. Recently, he’d been getting more and more intrigued with art and he wasn’t a bad drawer himself.
Placing things back in the bag and setting it aside, Taemin grabbed the next present from Kai and his mother. He excited peeling off the wrapping paper and gasped. It was a stereo—techy looking with the confusing buttons ‘n all. Taemin was excited! He could hook up his iPod to or place CD’s in it, even listen to the radio. It was really cool looking and Taemin was excited to use it.
“Thank you so much!” he exclaimed loudly, eyes starting to water from happiness.
This was a good birthday.
Kai reached over and gave Taemin a big hug. “Now we can practice dancing together!” he said enthusiastically.
The rest of the night, they all spent their time trying to figure out how to work the stereo. It really was confusing with all those buttons.
