What Used to Be

Gagging slightly, I could feel the excess bile rising up my throat. It was the second time I was laying in front of the makeshift garbage can, throwing up. Disgusted at the mess that had been made on the floor next to the sofa, I stood up before turning my head just in time to catch Luhan stirring awake. His face contorted with pain, followed by a mixture of concern and disgust as he looked to see me staring back at him.

“W-what?” Luhan asked, confused. I shook my head slightly before Luhan carefully got up, grabbing his jeans from the end of the sofa and pulling them on. Avoiding my gaze, he stepped around me carefully before striding straight to the only working bathroom that was in the house.

“Li Hua?” a gentle voice called out. I turned around to see a concerned Lay standing by the door of the house, Krystal standing next to him. Not bothering to clean up the mess from last night, I meekly gave a tight lipped grin before stumbling over to Lay. Krystal casually rolled her eyes before stepping away from the commotion.

“Luhan and I...alcohol. It was bad,” I managed to mumble, my voice sounding hoarse and tired.

“Where’s Luhan?” Lay questioned, steadying me and guiding us to the broken leather couch on the right of the living room.

“Uh...Bathroom.” I answered before laying back against the sofa. Lay smiled at me, his face looking apologetic.

“I’m sorry for how I behaved yesterday,” He murmured quietly, fiddling with his fingers. I almost let out a chuckle at his cuteness and the regretful look that was bestowed upon his concerned face.

“It’s alright.”

Lay smiled and took my hand into his, rubbing circles on my wrist. I was about to speak when we interrupted by a loud scream. I instantly shot up from the couch, regretting my decision not soon after due to the immense pain that crawled through my body.

Sending out a frown, Lay proceeded to place me down into the couch while pressingly lightly. “It’s your stomach that hurts right?”

“Yeah,” I replied. Lay moved closer and laid me down the couch. I felt a strange sense of deja vu as I remember Luhan from last night. My body stiffened, recalling memories of Luhan and I. Lay lifted my shirt, exposing my stomach. Immediately, I sat up.

“Lay--”

“Don’t worry.” He interrupted me. I slowly laid back down and felt his warm hands on my stomach, rubbing circles as he had been on my wrist. I felt comfort wash over the pain. Staring at him while he massaged my stomach made me smile subconsciously.

“Are you feeling better?” he questioned, eyes filled with concern.

“A little,” I muttered back, patting my stomach lightly. “Thanks for the massage, but it’s really not needed.”

Lay feigned hurt, pretending to take offense momentarily, before he gave me a smack on the stomach. “Are you saying you don’t want me to continue my fabulous massage?” he joked.

“Positive. Go find better things to do.” I chuckled.

“No.” Lay grinned mischievously, once again massaging my stomach. “I do what I want.”

The sound of a opening door filled the room, and within moments, Luhan appeared. His hair disheveled, shirt untucked and Krystal on his side with her arm clinging onto his supportively.

“Uh, Sorry.” Luhan grimaced uncomfortably at the sight of Lay and I. I raised my eyebrows in interest as Krystal tugged on Luhan’s arm.

“I guess we’re going to head out now,” Luhan coughed. “So you two can continue with whatever you were doing previously.”

“We are?” Krystal jumped, eyes opening animatedly.

“Sure.”

“Luhan,” I interrupted. He turned to my direction, but didn’t raise his eyes to meet mine. “Are you sure you’re feeling okay?” I questioned.

“If you’re feeling well enough to fool around, then I guess I’m okay with going out too,” he scoffed, face showing disinterest.

“Wait a minute--,” I attempted to retort before Lay placed a firm hand on my arm. “Stop. He’s probably just having a bad day.”

I couldn’t help regretting our mistake last night. Luhan turned away, Krystal still grabbing onto his arm, and walked out the broken door of the house we were staying at.

“Then he’s not the only one having a bad day,” I pried Lay’s hand off and stared at Luhan’s retreating figure.

Lay tried to start up a conversation once they left, but my mind couldn’t help but wander back to Luhan. What was our relationship even at? One moment, we were cuddling up close. Too close perhaps. Then we were fooling around. Too foolish perhaps. Did we make love? Or was it just out of lust? Was it the alcohol? My mind protested with the amount of thinking being done, and the ache in my head persisted.

A thin veil of silence enveloped us until Lay turned towards me, face showered with concern. “Li Hua,” he breathed. “What really happened between you two?”

I stiffened and my face turned an unattractive shade of red as the images from last night filled my mind.

“Luhan and I made a huge mistake. We weren’t aware of what was happening and we--we did something we shouldn’t have.” I muttered, hoping Lay would get the message.

“Oh.”

I sighed, sitting up from the sofa. Lay turned away and proceeded to get up and walk away from the room. Sighing again, I dizzily walked to the bathroom.

--

“Li Hua?” Lay called out. I stood up from the bed I was laying on, and rushed to the front door. Lay was standing there as well as Luhan and Krystal, who were carrying canned food and domestic supplies.

“Are you feeling better?” Lay asked, smiling. I frowned at his sudden mood changed, but nodded. He took a hold of a few bags that Krystal was carrying and took them to the makeshift kitchen, tugging on my arm to follow him as well. I looked back at Luhan, who was happily talking to Krystal, before cringing at the sight, then went after Lay.

“I’m sorry about the way I reacted earlier.” Lay spoke as we put the food away. “I was just surprised and not expecting that--”

“Lay--”

“--but, it’s okay. Everyone makes mistakes, Li Hua. You don’t have to explain yourself to me,” Lay smiled, his dimples becoming prominent on his smooth cheeks.

I subconsciously gazed at him, unable to break our eye contact.

“Lay!” Luhan yelled from the living room. I immediately looked towards his voice, and followed Lay who was walking towards the main room.

“We can’t use that food.” Luhan said urgently, checking to make sure neither of us had eaten it. He walked towards me and inspected my face to check for any signs of sickness. I stiffened at his touch.

“What are you doing?” Lay questioned.

“When Krystal and I opened some of the food that we brought, there was poison in them. Krystal noticed this, because the food was rotting in a strange way. Like something was eating it away. I don’t even think it was poison...” Luhan trailed off, going back to look over the food again.

I looked at Lay, hoping he'd have some idea as to what was going on. There was nothing.

My eyes met Luhans for a brief moment before he quickly averted his gaze back to the canned foods.

"We should leave this place." Lay spoke up. Krystal nodded, running upstairs to get her stuff.

"Where will we go?" I asked Lay, not wanting to go out to the grim weather that has been embracing the world around us.

"We'll figure it out." Luhan answered, finally speaking to me once after last night.

"KRYSTAL! LET'S GO!"

"Why are you ignoring me?" I glanced toward Luhan.

My question tendered no response, and he swiftly turned his head in the other direction, grabbing a piece of firewood.

"It's obvious. You talk to everyone else like there's nothing wrong, but you totally ignore me. Talk to me Luhan."  I reached over and snatched the piece of wood, tossing it into the ground.

He looked up abruptly, eyes distant. "That night was a mistake. Just leave me alone. I don't want to talk to you."

Luhan turned away, before proceeding to pick up the piece that I had thrown.

"I didn't think it was a mistake," I muttered quietly.

"And then. She slapped me, and THEN she kicked me, and THEN..." I couldn't help but laugh uncontrollably as Lay told the story of the girl who confessed to him, but then after he politely declined her offer to go out with her, proceeded to beat the out of him.

Luhan, Lay, Krystal and I had miraculously found enough wood from when we were wandering around to build a fire. We sat around it, immersed in conversation.

"Did you ever date her?!" Krystal laughed, wiping the tear that had fell from her eye.

"Oh hell no." Lay shuddered.

"I remember Sooyoung." Luhan chuckled. I glanced at him.

"Wait, what? How would you know? You and Lay had never met each other before this, right?" Krystal spoke up.

"Right. I remembered a girl from my past, I didn't realize she had the same name as who Lay was talking about." Luhan cleared his throat. I cocked my head to the side, confused by the coincidence.

"Come on guys, let's go to sleep." Lay interrupted my thoughts. I nodded in agreement and lay down next to Krystal while Luhan slept next Lay.
