Chapter 1 (Reposted)

Unwanted II: The Chaser

[A/N: I wonder what happened to Chapter 1. :/ It kind of disappeared all of a sudden. Anyway, hope to post Chapter 2 real soon. Sorry for not updating for about two months. :( I'm such a bad author. :(]

Tik tok tik tok tik tok.

You sat on one of the benches at the huge unfamiliar airport. You honestly did not have any idea where to go. You were holding on to Mrs. Nam’s words that someone would fetch you from the airport and bring you to an apartment or something. But an hour or two had passed, your stomach started grumbling. It’s about time you realized things.

You had to leave the airport now by yourself or else, you’d probably have to wait for snow in a bright sunny day before a car or someone could fetch you.

You stepped out of the automatic sliding doors of the airport tagging along your baggage with you. You deeply inhaled before exhaling. The atmosphere was too different from your country. America is just too different. You just hoped you could adjust in a matter of time.

You saw someone looking Asian. You approached the person to ask for some direction.

“Hey, excuse me. Do you speak Korean?” You politely asked. But the girl just shook his head and awkwardly smiled at you. You sighed in defeat.

It was impossible for you to look for directions.

Instead of putting yourself to shame because people doesn’t know your language, you just went with the flow of people to the direction most were taking.

You saw a line of cabs and people queuing. You waited on the line and finally got into a cab. “Where to?” The driver asked you. It sounded familiar and you just had to assume he was asking where to go.

“Nam Company.” You said. You were glad he was able to understand.

“Oh, you’re a Korean?” He asked. With that, you somehow understood him and nodded. “Must be a hard time for you. Not much of Americans speak your language.”

You just smiled at him since you did not understand a thing he added. *What is he saying? He knows I’m a Korean but he still blabbers things in English!* You sighed while thinking.

At the long ride, you just adored the beauty of the city buildings and surroundings. It was different from Korea in a way that amused you. You passed by a street full of various clothing stores and you just had to note to yourself to pay a visit one day. It was quite a long ride until the cab stopped in front of a tall building that amazed you with its facade. You got down from the cab and paid the fare. You looked up to the top of the building, it was too high that you barely read the name.

You shifted your gaze towards the door and there it was written.

Nam Company.

Your eyes lit up when you saw people of the same race as you entered the glass doors of the building.

You were about to step when you suddenly tripped on an empty clear carton of coffee. *Stupid people who don’t know to throw their trashes properly.* You hissed as you stood back up and looked around to make sure people did not notice what had just happened. You dusted your clothes before standing tall and dragging your baggage with you.

You entered the rotating doors and headed to the reception area. It really relieved you to see most people were Korean. “Annyeong haseyo.” You greeted the female receptionist. “I’m ________. I’m a trainee from Korea. The president of Nam Company sent me here.”

“_______? Let me see first.” She took a folder with files and scanned it. Maybe she was checking for your name. “Are you sure you’re sent from Korea?” She asked you again and you nodded. She closed the folder and took another one.

You suddenly grew nervous. You felt that there was something wrong.

“_________, right?” She asked again.

“Yes. I can’t lie about my name, okay?” You grew irritated because she was indirectly suspecting you. “I just arrived from Korea.”

“I’m sorry, _______-shi.” She closed the folder and looked at you. “Your name wasn’t written on the list of trainees sent by Nam Company Korea.”

You shook your head, “Please look over again. I’m not a kid who can forget her name.” You let out an annoyed chuckle.

“I’m sorry, ______-shi. The last batch of trainees arrived yesterday that’s why I grew curious why there was a late arrival of a trainee. I’m pretty sure you got a mistake on the details of being sent here.” She politely told you.

“What do you mean?” you innocently asked.

“Trainees from Korea arrive together. They have flights together as they go here. They come in batches.” She explained to you.

“But—“

“Naeun-shi!” A guy in chestnut color of hair approached the front desk as well. He was surprisingly wearing casual clothes instead of corporate attire. You thought it was weird. “Call the intercom in my office once boss’ coffee arrives.”

“Alright, Jongup-shi. Please be reminded again that you need to wear corporate clothes in the office.” The receptionist said.

The guy just chuckled, “I’m not an employee here, I’m a personal assistant of my boss.” He then noticed your presence. “Oh, do we have a late trainee?”

“No, no. She’s not on the list of trainees.” Naeun, the receptionist, answered. That Jongup noticed you had your baggage with you.

“Hey, actually, you might want to try as an individual trainee. My boss is really kind and generous. He can probably accept you.” He gave you a small nod and tapped the front desk to get Naeun’s attention. “Don’t forget to call me. The coffee is more important than your life to my boss.”

“Ara, ara.” Naeun shrugged and turned her attention to you the moment Jongup left. “That’s Moon Jongup. He’s the personal assistant of this training centre’s executive officer. He’s right, the ‘boss’ is really kind and generous.”

You nodded lightly, “Arassoyo. Sorry for bothering you, I’ll think about applying as an individual trainee.”

“Alright. Have a nice day, _______-shi.” She slightly bowed as you left. But before you could walk any further, you remembered you don’t have any place to stay in. So you walked back to the front desk and asked.

“I really don’t know how to speak in English, so do you mind telling me any places I could go to and stay in?” You sheepishly smiled at Naeun and she just chuckled at you.

Soon after, she handed you some brochures and advertisements of different apartments and hotels. She also helped you communicate in basic English. It was really helpful. You bowed before you left the Nam Company.

Before the sun sets, you finally set your foot on the apartment you rented for a month. It was spacious enough for someone alone like you. You fixed your clothes and personal stuffs on the bed room. You sat flatly on the couch in the small living room while switching tv channels. It was upsetting that the shows were all in English.

You almost forgot your hunger that afternoon until your stomach sounded again. You took your jacket and headed out to get something to eat.

Indeed, it would take time before you can adjust to the lifestyle. Being away from home stung your heart as well. You felt sorry for leaving your mother behind. You just wished time would fly fast so she can finally settle here at the states with you. Second, you wanted to ask Mrs. Nam why your name wasn’t written on the list of trainees. Besides, she did not inform you that trainees travel in batches.

It was quite suspicious though. But your goal here in New York shouln’t get any hindrance—to forget things and finally be an ideal girl for Woohyun. Or who were you kidding? You were trying to please Mrs. Nam.

Or find a new life.

Or maybe, just maybe... find yourself.

As you were walking, you did not realize that it was already dark outside. The sun has finally set and you were glad to have eaten and satisfied your hunger. The lights beamed from places to places. The city was glowing. People were lively passing by. You sat on a bench and watched your surroundings.

You tried memorizing the paths you walked through this day.

Well.

Stupidly.

You can’t remember everything that well. Even the way back to your apartment.

“Stupid.” You hissed to yourself. You cursed yourself for being clumsy again. You stood up and tried to figure out which direction to go back to your apartment. But you ended up walking in circles. You stomped your feet—mad at yourself.

You sighed. You just continued walking. You thought to yourself that staying in a place won’t get you home. You have to at least find a way back.

You were looking down at your feet as you walk when you bumped into someone. Hard chest, you thought. *Stupid people. Can’t they just walk on the other side when they see you walking?!*

You looked up only to see a familiar face. *AH! It was that guy at the Nam Company.*

“Oh, you... you really look familiar.” He told you.

You sheepishly smiled, “Well that’s because we met this morning at the Nam Company.”

“No, no... I think I really saw you somewhere before.” He said. “Wait, are you considering entering the Nam Company Training Centre?”

You bite your lip. It’s not the right time to think about it since you’re really lost right now and all you wanted to think of is how to get back to your unit. “I haven’t thought about it yet.”

“Anyway, I haven’t formally introduced myself yet. I’m Moon Jongup.” He extended his hand for handshake. That’s when you noticed he was holding a coffee with his other hand.

“Neh, I Naeun-shi told me. I’m ________.” You accepted his handshake.

His phone suddenly rang. Without answering it, he told you, “I have to go. Coffee rush to my boss.” He nudged the coffee to you. You just smiled and nodded as he left.

You walked at the other direction and thought how funny it is that his boss was so much into coffee. Coffee in the morning and at night?

You were walking when you suddenly tripped again on a clear carton of coffee. *STUPID. PEOPLE. JUST... THROW YOUR TRASHES PROPERLY—* You thought when you saw what kind of coffee container you just stepped on.

Your eyes widened in disbelief.

And your heart actually find a little relief and excitement as well.
