The Birth of an Untrained Cupid

The "Bridge"

3 years later…

“Myungsoo hurry up!” Sungjong called as the two of them hurried to school.

“I don’t know why I always have to go accompany you in your early morning stalking,” Myungsoo complained.

“Because I’m your best friend and you love me,” Sungjong smiled at the sour faced boy. “Besides, if I don’t wake you up personally  then you’ll wake up at around lunch time meaning you’ll miss school.”

“I could wake up perfectly well without you bothering me,” Myungsoo retorted.

“Oh please,” the younger said while rolling his eyes. “Remember the first week of school? Your mom actually came to school just to get me to wake you up.”

Myungsoo just sighed at this fact cause he really can’t deny it, Sungjong was like his own personal alarm clock, he really can’t wake up on time if it’s not Sungjong whose waking him up.  But getting waked up at 5 in the morning so that they get to school before 6 isn’t really Myungsoo’s morning cup of coffee. You might be wondering why the two of them are at school at 6 when classes start at 8, well the answer to that is very simple, the soccer club’s morning practice begins at 6.

The two of them are now sitting down on the downhill grass that leads to the school’s field giving them a good view but still hidden from the players that are training. Woolim's soccer club are now seen running across the field warming up their muscles in the process, oh and look! There's Hoya running around the field along with his team mates.

"Now then," Myungsoo started as he lay on the soft grass. "I'm gonna get some sleep, wake me up when you're done stalking."

"I'm not stalking!" Sungjong stated with a flushed face.

"You mean to tell me that watching sweaty varsity players or should I say a sweaty Hoya run around the field is called a hobby or something?" Myungsoo stated with a knowing smirk as he saw his friend open and close his mouth like a fish out of water and be red with embarrasment. "Your face proves my point, now I'm going to sleep."

And with that proven Myungsoo closed his eyes and soon after soft snores could be heard from him as he left Sungjong to watch stalk Hoya as he works hard at practice.

Okay, so Sungjong admits that what he's doing is a bit stalkerish but he can't help it. Hoya is already really handsome but to Sungjong he looks the best when he's trying hard at something. The fact that he tries his best at everything he does and that happy smile that adorns Hoya's face when he accomplishes something even if it's just morning practice makes Sungjong's heart flutter. Aish, he really fell hard for Hoya.

"Sigh," Sungjong, well, sighed. Is this how he's gonna spend his 3rd year of high school? Watching Hoya from a far? Why can't he just confess?

He has seen many people do it before - to him - and it looks so easy, so why can't he do it? Actually he has tried once before and believe me when I say that it was a bit, well, pathetic.

Flashback

Classes has just ended in Woolim high and we could see our main protagonist shakily stuff his things in his bag not even bothering to fix them inside.

"Are you okay Jongie?" Myungsoo asked with an amused smile as he knew why his friend was acting this way.

"Y-yeah," Sungjong stuttered. "I'm perfectly fine. Absolutely, perfectly, stupendously fine. I couldn't be more fine in my whole life-"

"Sungjong!" Myungsoo laughed as he grabbed his friend by the shoulder. "Breathe."

"Sorry," the younger breathed. "It's just that, we're already great friends so if he rejects me I'm afraid we won't be friends anymore."

"Jongie," Myungsoo smiled at the other's hurt puppy look. "I know Hoya and he really values friendship the most so I don't think he'll avoid you just because you confessed, besides, if he rejects you there are more fishes in the sea!"

"You're right Myung," Sungjong smiled at his friend.

"Now go out there cause you'll keep him waiting if you stay here any longer."

"Thanks Myungsoo!" called out the younger as he made his way out of the door.

Sungjong could now be seen racing across Woolim's halls just to get to the back of the school in time or else Hoya will think he was set up or something.

"Hoya-hyung!" Sungjong huffed as he reached his destination.

"Hey Jongie," Hoya smiled at the other. "You wanted to talk about something?"

"Yeah hyung," Sungjong said as he leaned on the wall while still facing the other cause he can feel his knees give out at any minute. "I-I've known you for a w-while now and I know t-that you're really reliable, s-smart and f-fun to be w-with." , why is he stuttering?

"Thanks for the compliments Jongie," smiled the other.

"S-so I just w-want to ask i-if y-you'd," and this is where his words stopped, it's like someone placed a rock in his throat to stop him from talking.

"If I'd?"

"Y-you..." Sungjong tried again. "Y-you... couldletmeborrowyourhistorynotes."

With that said Sungjong mentally facepalmed himself. History notes? Seriously? That has to be the most sorry excuse ever made.

"My history notes?" Hoya asked just to make sure he heard right.

"Yeah," the younger nodded dumbly.

"I don't really mind you borrowing it," the elder said as he took out his notebook. "But you didn't really have to call me out here, besides, with your brain I don't think you'll need it anyways."

Sungjong looked at the smile painted on Hoya's lips as he accepted the notebook, he thanked god that his hyung was completely underatanding and a bit on the dense side, but I guess that just makes him like him more.

End of Flashback

See? Completely pathetic. Ever since then he hasn't tried for a second time cause that incident will forever haunt him when he thinks about confessing. His thoughts were suddenly disturbed when he heard a loud cry of pain.

There on the field he saw the soccer club huddled up in a circle as one of their team mates lay on the dirt while clutching his leg in pain. Sungjong stood up to see who it was and he felt his blood run cold as he saw that it was his beloved Hoya-hyung that was squirming in pain.

"Myungsoo!" he quickly woke his friend up. "Something happened to Hoya-hyung."

"Wha?" Myungsoo answered sleepily as the younger male pulled him up and made him look at the field where he saw the socer club's captain tend to Hoya's leg. "It looks like he sprained his ankle."

"What'll we do hyung?" Sungjong asked in panic. "What if Hoya-hyung never gets to play again?"

"We?" Myungsoo said. "You mean you, you should go down there and comfort him."

"I," the petite male started. "I can't. He'll think it's weird that I got there at the right moment and might think I'm stalking him or something."

"I was just kidding about that whole stalking thing Jong," Myungsoo said.

"But he'll still think it's weird," Sungjong pouted as he looked back towards the field. Hoya was now being carried on a stretcher by his team mates to be tended to in the infirmary. He sighed at the sight as his worried filled heart grew more anxious.

"Come on Jongie," Myungsoo started to keep his friend's mind out of worry. "Classes are about to start soon."

"Yeah," the other replied as the two of them made their way to the school's high school building, his mind never leaving Hoya.

-------

As the two of them entered their classroom people couldn't help but notice the little frown upon Sungjong's face. What could have happened to make their little ball of sunshine make such a face?

"Good morning class!" Jungryul-seonsaengnim suddenly greeted them as he came inside, he quickly rethinked about his happy greeting though as he saw the somewhat gloomy atmosphere his class gave out. Jungryul quickly determined the cause of this as he saw the small frown adorning Sungjong's always happy face.

That kid can really affect a lot of people without noticing, including him. Now he's thinking if he should really tell the class that one of their classmates won't be joining them because of a broken leg. He decides he should tell them so that Hoya will know he's not forgotten.

"Ok class," Jungryul started completely catching everyone's attention. "Hoya won't be joining us today for he is in the infirmary cause he sprained his ankle during morning practice."

All eyes has now trailed over to Hoya’s vacant seat and Jungryul couldn’t help but notice that Sungjong’s frown got a little bigger as his eyes got glued to the empty seat next to him, Myungsoo couldn’t help but notice it too. He hates seeing his best friend act gloomy like that so he thought of something that just might cheer the younger up.

“Seonsaengnim!” Myungsoo called as he raised his hand. “Sungjong isn’t feeling well and would like to go to the infirmary.”

“Oh?” Jungryul mused as he looked at Sungjong, judging from the ‘what-the-hell-are-you-talking-about’ face he’s giving Myungsoo he can determine that the other isn’t really sick, but he can feel that Myungsoo is planning something to cheer his friend up, it’s a good thing Sungjong has great grades and one missed class won’t really affect his studies. “Then can you please accompany him to the infirmary Myungsoo.”

“Thank you seonsaengnim,” Myungsoo smiled and with not letting Sungjong protest he grabbed the feminine boy and dashed out of the room.

-------

“Hyung!” Sungjong cried. “What the hell do you mean I’m sick!?? I’m perfectly fine!”

“Yeah right,” Myungsoo replied as dragged the other boy. “Do you know how worried the whole class is because of the frown on your face?”

“Sorry,” Sungjong pouted as they stopped in front of the infirmary.

“Which is why you’re gonna fix that frown of yours by doing what you really want to do right now,” Myungsoo smiled but the other just gave him a questioning look. “Aish, you’re gonna comfort Hoya, now get in there.”

With that said Myungsoo pushed Sungjong inside the infirmary and shut the door so that the other won’t have any chance to escape.

“Hyung you idiot!” SUngjong cried as he tried to open the door but it wouldn’t budge and he could hear the elder’s snickers from the other side.

“Sungjong?” an all too familiar voice from behind him asked stopping himself from struggling with the door. He heard a small ‘good luck’ from Myungsoo and then heard his footsteps walk away meaning he was now alone with the person in bed, Hoya.

“Hi hyung,” Sungjong said sheepishly but he didn’t move any closer.

“Hi Jongie,” Hoya smiled. “Jungryul-hyung told you about my injury, huh?”

“Yeah,” the younger replied. “The whole class is really worried about you.”

“Oh? Just the class? Not you?”

“Of course I’m worried about you too hyung!” Sungjong cried and then blushed.

“I know you are Jongie,” Hoya laughed. “Why are you staying all the way there? My ankle just got sprained you know, it’s not like I have something contagious.”

The feminine genius blushed harder at this statement as he grabbed a chair then sat beside his hyung.

“So, uh, does it hurt?” Sungjong asked and mentally face palmed himself. ‘Of course it hurts! He sprained his ing ankle!’ “Sorry, that question must have sound stupid.”

“Not at all,” Hoya said. “At least I know you’re worried. But to be honest, the thing that hurts more is the thought of not being able to play anymore.”

“It’s just a small sprain hyung,” Sungjong comforted. “I doubt that’ll stop you from playing.”

“I know,” Hoya smiled. “But… playing soccer has been one of my dreams since I was a kid, my dad almost made it to nationals you see, but he didn’t pursue it.”

“Why not?”

“My mom had me,” Hoya smiled. “And he determined that family comes first, which is why I’m gonna try and live his dream for him.”

“You’re really incredible hyung,” Sungjong said in awe. “You already know what you want to do in your life, while I, well, I still don’t know what to take in college. Even Myung knows already that he’s gonna take a Music course in the future.”

“Oh come on Sungjong,” Hoya said. “You’re one of the most smartest people here in Woolim, I bet whatever course you pick you’ll excel at it.”

“Thanks hyung,” Sungjong smiled. “So you better get that ankle better soon so that you could continue your training in being a world renowned soccer player.”

“I’m really glad you came Sungjongie,” Hoya said as he held the younger’s hand in a friendly manner but it still made Sungjong’s heart palpitate, it calmed down though when he suddenly heard a hungry growl.

“Ehehehe, I guess I’m a bit hungry,” Hoya laughed sheepishly as he rubbed the back o his head.

“Well it is time for lunch now,” Sungjong smiled.

“You know what, I didn’t get to eat the breakfast my mom made me for my practice,” Hoya said. “Meaning I have food enough for two in my bag, care to join me Jongie?”

“I’d love too hyung.”

-------

Meanwhile in the cafeteria…

“Where’s Sungjong?” Sungyeol asked as Myungsoo came sat on their table, alone.

“He’s in the infirmary,” Myungsoo stated simply.

“What?!” Sunggyu exclaimed as all eyes are now on Myungsoo. “Did something happen?!”

“Nothing to him,” the younger replied. “But Hoya sprained his ankle so I made Sungjong go and comfort him.”

“You made Sungjong go?” Woohyun asked.

“Well, he was too shy to go,” Myungsoo answered. “And I didn’t want to see that frown on his face anymore so I just gave him a little boost.”

“So that makes you cupid or something?” Dongwoo asked as he observed the proud look on the younger’s face.

“I guess you could call me a modern day cupid,” Myungsoo said a bit proudly. “That’s it hyung! I’m gonna help Sungjongie and Hoya become closer and become a couple! Sungjong’s gonna praise me when I hook them up.”

“Good luck with that then,” Sungyeol laughed as he slung an arm aroud Myungsoo’s shoulder.

“If you get successful with this couple then maybe you can hook me up with someone?” Dongwoo joked.

Sunggyu and Woohyun just kept quiet as they looked worriedly at each other. They’re not really sure about this whole ‘Myungsoo-will-act-as-a-bridge-so-that-Sungjong-and-Hoya-could-be-together’ ordeal.
