Chapter 5

My secret: The promise I made that day

-Adagio-

Dahyun woke up feeling lighter. She felt good and thanked God for a swell morning. Her morning routine had always been the same 'Pray -> Bible -> Wash -> cook/heat up food -> prepare for school -> leave'. More than habit, it was a lifestyle she managed to develop through the years. She finished prepping and fixing her hairstyle. Once she reached the living room, she went to her mother's portrait, and cleaned it―never forgetting to trim the dead leaves on the flowers in the vase and replacing it's water―while making sure every area is spotless. After she was satisfied with her work, she said her thanks and goodbye's before locking up the house.

'New Message'

Dahyun was surprised at the sudden vibration. She didn't really expect any messages this early in the morning. She then pushed back the glasses that slid down the bridge of her nose from the sudden jump. She then opened the message, and checked it out.

(Dad)

-Hey sweetness, I'm at paris right now. It's almost night time but, I'm sure it's morning there. Don't forget to brush your teeth, and to eat healthy ok? See you soon Dahyun! .

She smiled at the message. Even if her father was almost never home, he never forgets to remind Dahyun to do her duties―no matter how silly they are. While scrolling through her messages, she noticed that an unsaved contact had been sending her messages. She was about to ignore it, when a new message came from the same contact. Upon opening it, she smiled at the simple message.

(+02XXXXXXXXXX)

-Good morning Dahyun-ah!~ Did you wake up nicely? Or beautifully? :P

-I bet it's the latter ;) -Sana

Dahyun was never used to recieving messages like this. It's usually Chaeyoung asking if she wanted to hang out, or Tzuyu about somthing important. Infact, everyone who texts her is usually about something important. Seeing messages like these made Dahyun feel somewhat different. It was something she isn't used to. "Seriously this girl..." she thought to herself. She was bewildered by it. It had been awhile since she felt this way, and she didn't know if she wanted it or not.

Dahyun entered the school and sees alot of students entering the school's yard, parking their bikes, and some of them got out of a car. She was walking past them all with earphones plugged in, playing the new hit song of the summer 'Dance the night away by TWICE'. It was bubbly and fresh and she definitely enjoyed the beat. This summer has alot of good songs, another one she loves playing is 'Wag-zak by Lovelyz' for a chill summer song, and she definitely wanted to play them all in the piano one day. The song hasn't ended yet, when she felt someone poke her cheek. She checked for the source of the finger and smiled. It was Tzuyu and Jihyo behind her. Dahyun took off her earphones after pausing the song.

"Hi Tzuyu, Jihyo unnie" she said with a genuine smile.

The two girls looked at Dahyun, and smiled back generously. It has been a while since they saw Dahyun smile like that, and they were definitely glad about it.

"Something good happened unnie?" Tzuyu asked.

"Mmmmm... well I saw you two today so I guess something good happened" she joked.

The two girls looked at each other and smiled, there was definitely something different from her aura this morning. She was more approachable, but it still needed something. Tzuyu was about to say something, when Jihyo cut her off saying that "they need to finish their part of the paperworks". Tzuyu had to interview the student body, and their only free time was this morning, so they excused themselves.

Dahyun watched as the two girls silhouettes shrink from the distance. Once she couldn't see them anymore, she decided to wear her earphones once more, and pace herself towards the entrance. She was walking in the outercourts of the school, and watched as the soccer varsity players play early in the morning. It made her miss her brother, but she brushed it away. The team captain, Jackson was directing his teammates in which position to take. There's also the baseball field, her classmate Kunpimook―also known as BamBam―was pitching. And the track and field with Jeongyeon and Eunha running to beat their best time―probably.

Dahyun checked her watch, it was 6:10 am on a monday morning. People usually detest monday mornings, so they try their best to make themselves ready for what the day has to give. Dahyun slowly paced herself going to the music room, letting the morning breeze do it's thing.

"Start of the week, yet you wish it was the end already, huh?" a voice from behind spoke, with a bump on her shoulder.

Dahyun was surprised with the sudden push. She never really expected anyone to greet her this early in the morning 'that's not Jihyo or Tzuyu that is'. It's definitely not Chaeyoung, since she usually sleeps till 6:20, and rushes to school to get to her classes on time. If she does wake up, she still doesn't put too much effort in going to school early―unless something was up. She then took off her earphones, and looked at the source of the action. It was Lisa, the girl who kicked the soccer ball straight to her face. The girl was smiling at Dahyun, and all she did was smile back.

"I mean, I'd rather end the day and play some CS:GO or something! Get my drift?" the blonde haired girl exclaimed, and smiled.

Dahyun looked at the girl in front of her before looking back to where she was walking. "I...".

"Geez, must you be so noisy this early?" A voice from behind voiced out in an annoyed manner.

Dahyun followed the voice, and found out that it was Mijoo. She couldn't tell from the voice, since it was pretty husky. It came into mind to ask her why, but she wasn't sure if it was a safe question knowing their friendship status.

"Woah, Mijoo! What have you and L been doing this weekend? Your voice is soo husky" the blond girl asked.

"None of your beezwax Laliz!" the brown haired girl spat.

"Don't be like that to my cute little elephant" a man said, who had black messy hair, and wears a loose polo shirt to compliment his messy hairstyle.

"Aww, L baby" Mijoo flirted with the boy.

"EW! Get a room you two!" Lisa spat out in disgust.

"Jealous?" the brown haired girl teased.

"Ughh, C'mon Dahyun, let's leave these two love birds" Lisa said, as she dragged the pale girl away from the couple.

The couple laughed at the blond girl, and the boy stopped them after pardoning himself. "By the way, I believe I haven't met your friend yet, haven't I?" the boy said, with a soft smile. "I'm Kim Myungsoo, arts majoring in theatrical play" he paused, before shaking the pale girl's hand. "You can call me L like how these two call me" he ended.

Dahyun shook her head, looked at the boy, and scanned his face. More than handsome, he had a friendly aura. She then decided that it was fine to introduce herself. "I'm Kim Dahyun... Music major in piano..." she introduced herself, and let go of the boys hand.

"She's good with her fingers" Lisa joked, making Dahyun look at her in curiosity.

"I'm sure she is" Mijoo added, making Dahyun look at the two in a dumbfounded expression.

Myungsoo noticed Dahyun's predicament. She was oblivious to the two girl's humor, and felt ashamed for them. "On behalf of these two girls, I'm sorry" he said with full remorse. "Don't mind them infact" he added.

"That was a good laugh" Mijoo said, while wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "Anyways, it was nice seeing you again Dahyun" she said, after patting the girl's shoulder and signalling the two to follow. Lisa looked at Dahyun and waved goodbye, after chasing after the brown haired girl. Myungsoo followed suit, and bowed slightly as an act of kindness.

Dahyun watched as the three talked and move farther away from her. She then took a mental note to not cross the three anytime soon. She then sighed, and wore her earphones once again before heading to the music room.

The music room has always been Dahyun's comfort zone. The peaceful vibe this place gives off was always her favorite. She looked at the grand piano in the middle of the room, and wiped off the spec of dust on the black and white keys, and it's fall board. She then tuned the piano, and placed her bag on one of the empty seats on the room. After everything, she slowly went to the open window, and leaned her body on the edge of the window's free end―where there is no glass―where she could see the gate where students enter in. Just a few fields to the right, you can see the 100 meter sprint of the school's track.

She saw Jeongyeon talking with Eunha about something before being interrupted by one of the students. It was Nayeon, and she seemed to be giving a bottle of water and a towel to the runner. "Maybe there is more that meets the eye to that girl" she thought to herself, as her eyes slowly lead her peripheral view to a smiling brown haired girl who was happily skipping. She watched as the girl greeted almost everyone that passed her. She was known to be a friendly person, and even Dahyun can attest to it, 'too friendly infact' might she add.

It didn't take long for light brown orbs to connect to dark ones. She looked at Dahyun, and smiled. Dahyun swore that the smile was soo bright, it was shining. The girl was bursting with color everywhere she went. As soon as Dahyun snapped out of her little train of thought, she looked away, and paced herself towards the piano's seat, readying her fingers to play.

Dahyun started out with a slow-yet-steady tempo, 'Adagio' as some musicians would say. Dahyun plays random key's―usually a four chord melody―and the tempo she uses differs on how she feels at the moment. When her fingers lay on the black and white keys, she kept playing till she felt like a song will come up. She wore her earphones, and pressed shuffle. The song that came out was 'Shine - pentagon'. It wasn't the best song to play, but it continued the tempo that she started with, so she didn't really mind.

The song started, she was about ready to sing. She knows a few things about singing. But she didn't really like the sound of her voice while doing so. In the end, she didn't bother. Instead, she played the piano while listening to the song. She didn't really pay attention to the lyrics, but once it was played without the music video, you would realize how cheesy the lyrics really are. She smiles as the song plays forgetting about her surroundings, playing the piano has that effect on her. In the middle of the song, she stopped playing all together and she removed her earphones.

"What comes to people's minds when they write a song?" she thought to herself, and delved with in her memory. To a time when she used to love writing songs, and playing the piano was her life's enjoyment. She opened her eyes once she saw a picture of a smiling mother. "Let's not delve that deep" she told herself, eliciting a melancholic smile. She then checked the time, and realized that it was getting late. She grabbed her things after packing up, and left the room―never forgetting to close the fall board.

Class started, and Ms. Sunmi has finished the roll call for her students. She reminded the whole class about their assignment, and said that they should play it in the stage on the school's auditorium. It's so that this section can play in front of the other sections, and they the same. She also reminded the students on how it was already the second week. Only one more week before the deadline.

Dahyun was on her seat looking out the window. She made sure to listen and absorb everything the teacher said. During lecture time though, she paid little attention to the words being thought in class. She has already advanced in reading the lesson, and will only pay attention to the ones she couldn't clearly understand in one reading. Her mother always thought her how to be diligent in studying, and it became a habit before sleeping to advance read her lessons. Her mother told her that "By advancing in your lessons, you get to have more time doing the things you want to do during the morning and the afternoon". It became a principle she lived by.

The classes ended, and she decided to skip eating with Chaeyoung and the others. She texted Chaeyoung that she won't be joining them in the table, but instead have some alone time to help her in composing a new piece. Upon sending the message, she packed up her things, and went straight up the rooftop.

It was a rather peaceful time up on the rooftop. It was something she has been missing these past few days. The cool breeze, and the silence that filled up the empty space of the open floor. Dahyun reached out for a pack of choco pie from her bag, and popped open a juice box. She sat by her favorite spot on the rooftop, leaning on the metal rails―that seemed to have etched the shape of her back. Dahyun won't lie when she says that the rooftop is her get away place.

After cleaning up after her food, she brought out her phone and earphones, along with her music notebook and pencil. She played a metronome going off at 100 bpm. With her pencil, she tapped the floor matching the beat before scribbling notes on her music notebook. After finishing the set, she scratched her head, thinking how it would sound like. It was a stretch, and it was not something she would want to play―but it was something at least. This was the fifth composition she's made for the project, and she planned to play it all on the piano later in the afternoon.

Feeling the peaceful atmosphere the rooftop gives off, she closed her eyes treating herself to some well deserved rest. It wasn't until she felt her phone vibrate, that she opened her eyes. She checked her phone, and saw the same unsaved number who texted her earlier this morning.

(+02XXXXXXXXXXX)

-You didn't join us this afternoon... and here I am, thinking that I would get to see your adorable self :(

-My day isn't complete anymore ;w;

Dahyun lifted her eyebrow in question. "Why would she even-" her train of thought was cut by a vibrating phone.

-Where you at btw??

Dahyun decided to ignore the girl. She didn't bother replying. The girl was friendly, yes but she didn't want to share about the sanctuary that she found in school. Not just to anyone at least. Dahyun checked the time, and it was still too early to move out. Instead, she decided to sleep in a little more. She grabbed her phone, and set her alarm to set off after 15 minutes before briefly closing her eyes and slowly letting rest do it's thing. It wasn't till she heard the door open that her nap was interrupted. She lead her eyes to the open door, and was surprised to see light brown orbs connect with dark ones. The girl smiled and it radiated soo much color. The girl then paced herself towards the resting girl.

"So you were here all along" Sana giggled.

Dahyun stared at her, the laugh is ringing on her ears. It was like she was meant to hear that soft voiced laughter. It was an unnecessary noise to the once quiet place, yet it was addicting. She then watched as the girl sat beside her.

"How did you-"

"Chaeyoung and Tzuyu told me" she stated.

Dahyun sighed, and looked far away. "Those two..." she thought to herself before being cut off by the brown haired girl.

"Why aren't you replying to my messages?" the girl asked with a smile.

Dahyun glanced at the girl beside herm and thought about how clingy the girl is. She looked down, not wanting to speak. The girl was sparkling in front of her, it was scary. There are times that she can handle little things that the older girl does, but there are times where she is just too overly energetic like this. The warmth was comforting, yet at the same time nerve-racking.

"Hey" Sana leaned closer, her hand was placed by the space on Dahyun's back making the girl lean back on thin air. It didn't take long for Dahyun to fall back, as she tried to support her body with her two hands for support. She was curled upward due to the girls advances, and it didn't help how she was inching closer and closer to the girl's face.

"Close..." it was all Dahyun can think of, as she felt her face flush red with heat. The milky porcelain pallet now mixed with pink and red. She stared at light brown orbs, making her freeze in the spot―like a deer in the headlight. She wanted to focus on something else, so instead she looked down by her bag thinking of a good way to escape this predicament she is in.

She heard a soft giggle before a hand grabbed her by her chin. The hand moved her face to meet with the older's one.

"I'm right here you know" Sana said, making dark brown orbs connect to light ones.

"Why does she always do this?" she thought to herself, feeling helpless. She watched as the girl stare at her eyes, to her lips and back. Everything felt surreal, she felt her mind going blank. She couldn't move her body, and it was something she noticed when dealing with the girl before her.

"I..." she was about to say something when she heard her phone's alarm go off. "I gotta go" she said, while grabbing her phone, quickly fixed her things and rushed out.,

"Seriously... Why do you keep running away from me? And here I thought we were getting closer too..." Sana thought to herself as she watched the girl running away. She then sighed, and smiled.
(The field and back unlocked)

Classes have ended, and Dahyun felt more tired than before. She decided not to text Chaeyoung or Tzuyu anything―since she was a bit upset from the incident earlier. She wanted to hurry home, but at the same time not really. It was still too early, and she didn't really feel like going home. She paced herself towards the old music room.

Once she stepped inside the room she was greeted with the black grand piano located on the center. It was a sight for sore eyes. To Dahyun, the piano is one way of escape. She opened the fall board, and the black and white keys were given light. She glided her fingers along each key. She closed her eyes and remembered her encounter with the girl. One of her original plans was to play the songs she tried her best to compose, but she couldn't help but get the feeling that she was being trapped, or chased. She didn't like it one bit. She then closed her eyes and played a harsh note.

Rachmaninoff - Little Red Riding Hood

It started slow, and like every encounter, it was a moment to behold. But as the notes keep going, it became faster and harsher than the other―yes, the feeling of being chased and running away. That was the kind of relationship she had with the girl. A scary one-sided bliss. Infact, like the notes of the song, it is a messy experience. But with each passing key, she felt her stress release, and her hard presses started to soften. She finally felt relaxed and relieved. As the song finally reaches it's , The picture of the older girls face filled her mind. Like how those light brown orbs stare at her like it was staring directly to her soul. She felt weak at the petrifying gaze. "How annoying..." she thought to herself, and ended the piece. She suddenly heard claps behind her. She checked back, and there was the same girl she dedicated the song to.

"I always love hearing you play" Sana stated as she walked closer to the younger girl.

Dahyun looked down and started to prepare her stuff to leave, but was cut by an extended hand towards her shoulder. Once again, the young pianist is trapped by the wolf Sana.

"Hey, why do you keep running away?" the older girl asked, earning a look of dismay from the younger one.

"Wh... What makes you think that, unnie?" Dahyun stuttered, earning a giggle from the older one.

"It's Sana, remember?" she said in a playful manner. "Plus, you almost never really show yourself to me... like you're always in a state of hiding" she added.

Dahyun looked down, and pondered deep. Why was she running away from this person. "It's cause... you're scary?" she answered but it was all superficial, she knows the real reason why she doesn't want to open up to the older girl―to anyone as a matter infact.

The girl giggled softly, and sat beside the younger girl. She looked as porcelain skin and tiny shoulders come into view. "You're the first one to call me scary, Dahyun-ah~" she stated, and stretched her legs. "I've been called cute, pretty, adorable, kind, friendly, and all sorts of compliments. Scary was never one of them, so that's a first" she stated.

Dahyun looked at the older one in distress. "You just complimented yourself" she thought to herself, and sighed.

"I'm not as scary as you think" Sana stated, making the younger one stare at light brown eyes. The girl was smiling brightly, a genuine innocent smile yet Dahyun can't seem to grasp the logic behind the girl's motives.

"Look, un-"

"Sana" the older girl cut gesturing for the girl to say it.

"S... Sana unnie... It's not you... It's just that I'm not a people person" Dahyun stated earning a light hum from the girl.

"So you're an introvert? CUTE!~" she stated, now hugging the younger girl.

Dahyun stared at the older student, her face flushed red at the sudden action. "What's wrong with this girl?" Dahyun thought to herself, and opened as to say something but was cut by a random clicking of tongue.

"Unnie?" Tzuyu entered the room, closing with her hand stopping herself from laughing. "You're as red as a tomato" she teased.

"Dubs! I'm sorry for awhile ago, let me make up for it by..." Chaeyoung entered the room with a chocolate cupcake on hand. She smiled at the sight of the two. "Oh-ho-ho! What do we have here?" she stated.

"I dunno, Chae but it seems we've invaded their privacy" the tall girl stated.

"Sheesh unnie! Don't do this in school grounds!" the cub stated.

"YOU GOT IT ALL WRONG!" The pale girl screamed, making the two maknaes laugh and the older girl hum in glee.
