Full Speed Ahead
A Work in ProgressAn eerily calm silence filled Jongin’s office as he placed the phone back in the receiver with a barely audible click. My hands had returned to my lap, rubbing the same now slightly raw spot on my left hand. Several thoughts filtered through my mind but in the undercurrent was a constant chant. I need to get out of here. It chanted. I need to get home! It screamed.
I didn’t want someone to get in trouble just because I was overly sensitive. Besides that, I had put two and two together. The man had wanted me to be his executive secretary, which meant he was an executive himself. Jongin had just mentioned that he was close friends with all of the executives here. The guy from the interview was his friend.
I suddenly felt Jongin’s gaze boring into me and when I looked up, he met my eyes rather than avoiding them. It felt like he had been looking at me for a long time. I could tell he was fuming. Was he mad at me for over dramatizing and painting his friend in a bad light? Could he be mad at his friend for putting me in an uncomfortable position? If that was the case, who was I to cause strife in their relationship?
I was about to make an excuse to leave when a guttural growl came from the otherside of the room. My immediate thought was that there had to be a dog in the room that I hadn’t noticed before but before I could look any closer Jongin stalked quickly toward the door.
I stood up taking his exit as my queue to leave and a chance for me to escape to my car.
“Just, stay here while I sort this out.” Jongin stopped me before I could make it through his office door.
“What? Where are you going?” He kept walking and I kept following him. He gave no response and pressed the button beside the elevator.
“Jenny, would you get Sonja some water or tea? I’ll be back after I sort this out.” He didn’t even spare me a glance.
“Jongin wait--” The elevator door was already closing with him on the other side.
