The First

Calloused Pathos

He ran as fast as he could. The police cars were heard all over the area, sirens echoing here and there. He was a man in pursuit.

If he was going to be honest, he kind of enjoyed it. He missed this thrill, the adrenaline on the run in his veins, the wind running past him as it swept his dark brown hair along his forehead. The people gasping, giving him weird looks, and the smell of the light smoke pollution that entered his nose. He missed being on the run. He loved being chased by danger after all.

"Stop right there!" A policeman says over the radio, and he glances back to check the closing proximity. He's now passing by a commercial area, where people are seated outside, peacefully eating their meals, people shopping on the street shops, and couples walking hand in hand. Not for long, Woohyun crashes the common scene, jumping over restaurant tables, pushing aside shop carts, and the police don't stop running and screaming over the phone.

"I don't think this man will settle down." Another police officer says over the radio, and finally, the police in charge, or  the man leading the pack speaks, and everyone on the line listens carefully. "He's a wanted man. We can't let him slide. People will start to panic if we lose him now. You all know what he's done." He says in a calm manner, and everyone couldn't help but agree on his statement. "We need to catch him at all costs. Do what you must. Shoot if you should."

"But sir-" another policeman was about to protest, but the head has cut him off. "I'm in charge, and everyone must do what I say. Is that understood?" The police cars drive faster and made sure the criminal was in sight. "Yes sir!" They all said in unison.

Meanwhile, the officer-in-charge's partner speaks up as he drove in haste speed. "Don't you think you're a little harsh on this man?" He chuckles a bit, his eyes focused on the road. "Myungsoo, he's a criminal. It's our job to catch him. It's the court's job to judge him." He says nonchalantly as he readies his gun. "Well being an officer doesn't forbid to show mercy." Myungsoo continues, stepping on the gas pedal. They were near in cornering the young man. "I just said shoot, not kill. Isn't that already mercy?" He answers his question, and gets ready to bust the door open. "Not quite, officer." He answers, and chuckles before he roughly pulls over the car in front of the running outlaw.

As he analyzed the scene, he gathers up his strength to jump over the car. The two policemen remained on their seats and stared at him as he approached the police car. He takes a deep breath, takes the last step with full force before jumping in the thin air, when the man on the shotgun seat briskly went out of the car and aimed the gun at him. After that, everything was like slow motion to him.

He sees the gun, and realizes he was about to be shot. He tries to dodge in advance, but as he did, the policeman's hands shifted faster than him and fired a bullet at his torso. Feeling the excruciating pain, he feels another bullet pierce in through his back, and another on his leg. He falls on the road, his vision blurry, and everything started to fade. He could hear someone shouting 'stop' and 'hold your fire', before landing forcefully on the road, and finally out from reality.

"I said hold your fire! Who told you to shoot simultaneously?!" The officer-in-charge exclaimed at the firing officers. "Did you not undergo training? Why would you all shoot continously in an area like this?! Don't be too careless!" The officer-in-charge scolds the pack, and Myungsoo rests his hand on his shoulder. "Calm down now, didn't you say to shoot if they should?"

"I did, but all they cared about was catching the culprit. We all know that our main goal is to capture it, without hurting or dragging any civillians into this." Myungsoo put back his gun on his belt and walked towards the body on the ground. He kneels down, checks his pulse, and then turns around to reach for his radio. "This is Kim Myungsoo speaking, is there any medical team available at the moment?" He stands up and walks back to the man he was talking to earlier. "This is Lee Sungjong speaking, affirmative, there is a medical team available at the moment. Where are we needed?" Myungsoo takes his radio once again and answers. "Myeongdong district, the second intersection to the left. Please hurry, the victim is barely breathing." He put down his radio once again, and stands beside the officer-in-charge.

"You know, Howon, being rational is better than scolding your team. Yes, they may have been careless, but there is no point of this whole mission if the culprit dies. Control yourself next time." Myungsoo gives him a weak pat on his back, before going back to the police car to get something. "Now, shall we do some first aid?"

----

"Culprit is barely breathing, his vitals are weak. He's currently being rushed to the hospital." Sungjong reports over the radio. He adjusts the patient's position to make sure he doesn't get any further injuries. "Hyung, what did the hospital say?" Sungjong asks as he turns to his sunbae named Dongwoo, who just put down the phone right after he asked. "They said there weren't any capable surgeons available at the moment. There was a sudden traffic accident not far from the hospital, and it was some government employees riding it, so all of those capable surgeons are occupied." Dongwoo wipes away his sweat with his arm. He exhales heavily and tries to think of another way.

"But this man is dying! There must be at least one available!" Sungjong panics, as he holds on to the patient's stretcher since the ambulance was in complete rush mode. "Well, they never said they didn't have a free surgeon available." Dongwoo tells Sungjong as he realizes something. He grabs his phone and hastily searched his contacts. "What do you mean? You just said they were all occupied!" Sungjong suddenly falls on his knees as the ambulance abruptly slows down. He hits his head on the foot of the stretcher, and then got up as soon as he regained his balance. Meanwhile, Dongwoo was already ringing a number in his phone, and was hopefully wishing that the other line would answer the call.

"Hello?" A warm voice greets his ears, and Dongwoo couldn't help but smile in delight. "Hyung, we need your help. Someone's dying." Sungjong peeks outside to see the hospital's entrance, so he readies himself to get out immediately. "Aish, why are we even saving a criminal?" Sungjong says in his head, as he adjusts the patient's head level to make him more comfortable.

The door finally opens, and a bunch of doctors await them. They all worked together to bring the stretcher down, and was finally rushed to the emergency room.
