Stop the World

A Love Like Ours

The night was alive with anticipation. Children’s laughter filled the empty space as they rushed from house to house, their parents slowly trailing after them as they eagerly collected as much candy as they could. The wind restlessly blew through the trees, shaking their branches and pulling off their leaves, but still no sound was made. Birds rustled their feathers as they circled through the sky, returning home to settle in for the evening, watching the world move around them silently as if they knew something would happen. As if they were waiting.

Minho walked past the bustling street, barely registering the excited squeals that echoed around him as he tuned into the loud silence of the world around him. Since waking up earlier than usual that morning, he had felt odd: like his heart was about to beat out of his chest, like he it was waiting for something to happen. He could feel the adrenaline coursing through him but couldn’t figure out why, instead simply choosing to alleviate the tension by beginning his day with a long run. He had noticed the eerie silence that morning too, but having been so caught up in his own unusual behavior, he hadn’t paid much attention to the lack of movement and noise around him.

Upon remembering his unusual run this morning, Minho glanced up to the night sky, eyes desperately searching for the one thing that would help him feel centered. The moon caught his eye but only just as it was hidden behind clouds and was already high up in the sky. He felt his heart settle in his chest, contentedly beating as a familiar sense of peace washed over him.

Minho slowed as he reached his destination, eyeing the long line of people that were vying to get inside. Loud music crashed over him as one of his friends caught his eyes and waved him over frantically toward the front of the line. Apologizing to the many people he was now cutting, Minho joined his hyungs in line and idly listened to their familiar banter.

If Minho had thought the music was loud waiting in line, it was oppressive once they had actually stepped foot into the club. The throng of sweaty people moved around them as the group made their way to the bar and ordered drinks, taking a few shots to get the night started. Although the alcohol burned his throat, Minho swallowed each drop, anxious to tamp down the butterflies that had once again began dancing in his stomach. Similar to this morning, his body felt like it was preparing for something, something important, he just couldn’t figure out what.

The heavy beat of the music coursed through him, Jonghyun and Key dragging Minho onto the dance floor, moving around each other haphazardly until he finally laughed and relaxed into the music. Some of his anxiety left his body but he still felt as if the air was ripe with anticipation.

Soon, his hyungs were gyrating against each other, desperate to use the excuse of a crowded dance floor to dance this closely even though Minho knew they were soul mates.

Feeling like he needed to give the two some space, Minho fought through the crowd looking to get some fresh air. He pushed open a side door and let the cool night wash over him, basking in its brilliance as his skin soaked in the effervescent light of the moon. He took in a deep breath, feeling it expand through his chest and into his soul, his eyes closing from the sense of tranquility that washed over him after a long day.

“Do you have a light?” a soft voice asked him. Taken by surprise, Minho’s head whipped around to find a beautiful bunny looking back at him expectantly. Well, a woman who was dressed up as a bunny, ears and all.

“No, sorry,” was all he could say. The woman looked disappointed but returned the unlit cigarette to , leaning against the wall and gazing up at the night sky quietly. Feeling drawn to her, Minho moved as if he were a moth drawn to an open flame, until he found himself leaning against the wall right next to her so that they were only a few inches apart.

She turned to gaze at him, raising an eyebrow in silent question before returning her attention to the stars. Minho felt his chest tighten and his stomach drop as he continued staring at her, his eyes taking in the delicate curve of her jaw and the beautiful crinkles by her eyes that were obvious signs of smiling. Some deep, unknown part of him longed to see that smile, the image of its brilliance striking him as one of the most beautiful things he would probably ever witness.

His hungry eyes took in every feature, not paying attention to his surroundings until a gruff voice offered the bunny a light and she took it, moving out of his sight only briefly before once again leaning against the wall.

“Smoking’s bad for you.”

The statement hung between them for several seconds before the woman turned to him, a small smile gracing her lips and making Minho itch to see the real thing. Now it was her turn to look at him. Her beautiful brown eyes travelled down his body, taking in every detail and making Minho hold his breath in expectation before she had suddenly moved closer, so that her bunny ears were tickling his face. Gazing up at him, she smiled brightly this time, the expression taking over her face and melting away the last coherent thought Minho had.

She brought the cigarette to her lips, taking one long drag before dropping it to the ground and stomping it out. Releasing the smoke slowly, she turned her head away so that it avoided Minho’s face. His heart thumped wildly in his chest at the familiar way her shoulders moved and the slight way she blushed, ducking her head cutely so that he couldn’t see her expression. Something deep within him clicked and, without knowing what drove him to act, he reached a tentative hand out to cup her chin and gently force her to meet his gaze.

“You’re as beautiful as the moon,” he breathed, his eyes seeking hers for permission before he leaned down tentatively to kiss those plush lips that he feared would soon be haunting his dreams.

The still night burst to life around them at the touch of their lips, each gasping with the knowledge that something big had happened even if they weren’t quite sure what. Minho felt her arms wrap around his back and he returned the embrace, drawing her in as close as he could so that his body thrummed with satisfaction and he sighed, releasing the built up tension that he hadn’t known was there until that moment.

“You’re as beautiful as the night,” she whispered against his lips, taking the reprieve to pull him against her so that she was sandwiched between the wall and his warm body.

Minho felt his heart take an extra beat as the words pushed against his memory, begging him to remember something that was just out of reach. He kissed her forehead tenderly before once again capturing her lips in a soft kiss, filled with all of the passion he didn’t know he had.

She sighed into the kiss, digging her fingers into his hair and pulling at the strands until she forced their lips apart and whispered into his ear. Minho nodded in silent agreement, drawing her away from the wall, back through the building and the crowd that didn’t seem so loud now until they were on the sidewalk, walking side by side, hand in hand down the street.

He couldn’t help but notice the lovely way that the moon shone down on his bunny, her shiny hair catching the light and her starry eyes reflecting its brilliance. They walked silently, no words needed when they could feel that this was right, that they were right.

When they finally reached her apartment building, she didn’t drag him into an apartment like he had thought but instead pulled him along behind her until they were exiting the stairwell and standing on the roof. She smiled up at him and he grinned wolfishly, like a fool in love, back at her until she was laughing and he swore that the stars shone a little brighter and the night danced around them at the sound.

Unable to resist her dazzling brilliance, he drew her to him, shutting off her rich laugh with a hungry kiss until they were no longer two separate beings but one unified entity. Minho loved the way that her creamy skin shone with happiness, light seemingly emanating from every pore as he kissed each inch reverently. Each caress elicited a sigh that seemed as familiar as the night air, and Minho reveled in the knowledge that she was his.

“Minho-yah,” she breathed, her breaths coming quicker and faster as their bodies moved together.

“Eunsook-ah,” he responded, not bothering to wonder how she had known his name when hers had came to him so easily. Instead he leaned down to kiss the tip of her nose, leaving a trail of stars in his wake as he kissed along the line of her jaw to the side of her neck, tasting every perfect inch of her even as he lost himself to the seamless union of their earthly bodies. She screamed out, following him into the blinding brilliance of their love and they felt the world shift around them, a familiar knowledge echoing through their tired bodies and settling around them until they both felt the world stop.

The night air came to life around the pair, birds chirping and leaves swaying openly in as the moon was reunited with her night. Minho collapsed onto the roof, pulling Eunsook on top of him in the most familiar way possible. She ran her fingers over his chest, tracing constellations that were no longer there. He combed through her dark hair, the once pearlescent strands now a shiny black. They lay there for hours, silent amid the restless night that thrummed around them. The pair knew that soon the day would come and the spell would break, but neither could find the energy to move.

As Eunsook nodded off to sleep, she fell peacefully into a dream where the night morphed into a wolf and, this time, should come wrap her arms around him; the moon finally reunited with her night.
