Chapter 3
You Are My Life
Beep. Beep. Beep.
The sound of the monitors beeping woke me back to reality.
A reality which signifies that I’m still alive and breathing.
A reality which I never wanted to be in anymore.
I am supposed to wake up with my mom smiling in front of me,
embracing me, and not at a confining and too sterile hospital room, alone.
Why did I live? I am supposed to be dead by now.
I was sure that I’m going be dead that night when I jumped at the bridge.
This shouldn’t be happening.
“Oh good thing you are now awake.” A nurse suddenly came into view
with her charts tucked in hand. After checking some stuff, my vitals maybe,
she wrote something down in it then smiled when she saw me stare at her.
“Do you need something Mr. Kim?” bitterness suddenly exploded in my
mouth when I heard how the nurse used formality after referring to me.
“Mr. Kim? Tss.. That’s my bastard father. Taeyeon will do.” the nurse’s
smile faltered after hearing my words.
She must think I’m a psycho for calling out my father like that.
Well.. He is. He deserve it.
“I understand, Taeyeon-sshi. I’ll notify you’re ‘bastard’ father about you
finally regaining consciousness right away, so for now I’ll excuse myself.”
the nurse said while quoting bastard in the air, mocking me for my disgraceful behavior.
“Oh no. Can you do me a favor? Can you not call him for now?
He’s the last thing I wanted see at the moment.” I sincerely asked the nurse.
“Yes of course...” A small victory sigh escaped my lips, however cut short
when she added, ‘but only if you have other immediate families that can
take care of you right now instead of him.”
I have no one. Not even someone I can call as a friend.
“I have none.” the nurse checked the IV bag once more, noted the
small numbers shown in the small monitor, then finally took off saying,
“Well, if that’s the case, then you’ll have to see your father once more.”
I was once again wrapped in my own solitude after the nurse took off.
I wonder what day it is today. Did I sleep too long?
Excluding the continuous and constant beeping of the vital monitors
and the gushing of the AC, everything was silent.
Everything felt silent. Once again, I am left alone.
Always left alone.
A faint pain suddenly pulsated from my bullet wound when I tried
to reposition my self, making me hiss unintentionally.
My throat felt dry and hoarse, instantly making me crave for water.
I looked at the bedside table near me, frustrated when I saw nothing
but my cellphone, probably dead after being submerged in the water, and wallet.
As my frustration amplified after minutes ticked by, a new creature came
inside my room, stopping right beside my bed.
“Taeyeon-sshi, please stay down. Don’t try to pull yourself up when your
body is not yet capable of doing so.”A fine womanly voice scolded me
right after positioning herself right at my side.
