ACT 1

SCENE 1

Lights on.

JESSICA steps onto the stage and walks right to the middle where there lies a single chair, a table, and a laptop on top of it. Right next to the laptop was a picture frame. She was in her writing room. JESSICA sat down on the chair and looks out at the audience, singing softly.

JESSICA: Hey, how’s life going? Good? Yeah. That’s good… that’s good. Life is pretty much trolling with us these days huh? Yeah, I agree. Oh, me? I’m just stressing out about something that I’m currently working on. I was told to write a play, it’s been few weeks and I was left with nothing to say. Writer’s block, if one may say. Until thoughts about her came through. I was rushed with sudden emotions.

But it’s all good. It’s all good. I’m okay now. It’s for a better cause. I’m sure.

JESSICA laughs sadly before slowly picking the picture frame up and stares at it for quite some time. A smile forms on her lips. The song goes slower and slower.

JESSICA: She was one of the best girl friend I ever had. Girlfriend? No. She wasn’t. Best friend? Yeah you could say that. She was someone alright – definitely a special someone. Someone I really treasure. Someone who made some few changes in my life and told me that every morning is a blessing. Because of that I knew. I knew exactly what to write.

By then I knew, I’m going to write about her. About us, about few of our adventures.

This is a tribute.

And this is the story, about a special sunrise.

JESSICA stops singing, leans back and the lights slowly dim out.

SCENE 2

Lights .

In a campus café, JESSICA was sitting alone on a round table to the left whilst the other students were chattering with their own friends. TIFFANY walks in and sat down right next to JESSICA.

TIFFANY: Good morning!!!!!!!!!

JESSICA: What’s so great about mornings?

TIFFANY: Um, literally everything? Feel fresh and secured and oh look at the birds chirping out in thin air-

JESSICA: (cuts TIFFANY off) I would really appreciate if you would just shut up at the moment. I’m very much sleepy. Also, we’re in the café, you can’t see any birds, Tiffany

TIFFANY: Is it wrong for a girl to dream?

TIFFANY rolls her eyes and pulls out her phone from her pocket. SOOYOUNG walks in and plops down right next to JESSICA

SOOYOUNG: (Enthusiastic) Good morning my dear little favorite!

JESSICA: Okay honestly, what is up with you guys and mornings?

SOOYOUNG: C’mon Sica, where’s your sense of fun?

JESSICA: I can assure you, it’s here. Just it doesn’t show early in the goddamn morning like what you guys are going through

TIFFANY: Jesus, why are you so grumpy

JESSICA: BECAUSE WE HAVE A LAST MINUTE MORNING CLASS

TIFFANY: OKAY GIRL CALM DOWN, goddamn

TIFFANY slowly moves away and SOOYOUNG laughs at the weird interaction. SOOYOUNG pulled JESSICA closer and plugs one earphone on her right ear.

                         JESSICA: What the heck

                         SOOYOUNG: Shush, listen to this

There was a slight pause between SOOYOUNG and JESSICA. Suddenly a slow song cues in, JESSICA slowly sways her head left and right. SOOYOUNG nodded and the song stopped. JESSICA pulls the earphone out

JESSICA: That was good.

SOOYOUNG: I know.

JESSICA: But what was that for?

SOOYOUNG: Nothing really, just that the song is good when people are stressed out. Like you especially

TIFFANY: She’s stressed out 24/7

JESSICA: No one asked you, Tiff

TIFFANY: Hey, I’m just trying to exist

SOOYOUNG: (To Tiffany) She does look pretty cranky doesn’t she?

TIFFANY: Is that even a question? Of course

JESSICA: Are you guys really going to go on talking crap about me when I’m literally right here?

SOOYOUNG and TIFFANY laughs. Just then SOOYOUNG took out her Polaroid camera and pulled both of the girls closer

SOOYOUNG: Let’s take a picture

JESSICA: Again? We did this yesterday too

SOOYOUNG: So what? I don’t see you complaining

JESSICA: I’m complaining now

SOOYOUNG: You’re just grumpy in the morning

TIFFANY pulls JESSICA closer anyway so she would shut . All of them posed for the camera. After SOOYOUNG pressed the shutter, a Polaroid comes out. It hasn’t fully dried yet but SOOYOUNG passes it to JESSICA

SOOYOUNG: Here, you keep it.

JESSICA: Why me again? You keep it this time

SOOYOUNG: I told you I at keeping photos. I might tear it.

JESSICA: You keep on telling and asking me to keep your stuffs. Ugh. I’m starting to think that it’s just an excuse to throw your stuffs out. Why, has your mother been nagging about your hoarding habits?

Pause.

SOOYOUNG: I can assure you that it is definitely not an excuse

Pause.

JESSICA peeks through her watch on her wrist. She sighs and took the Polaroid anyways before slipping it into her purse

JESSICA: Alright, whatever you say. Anyways, I’m late for class. I’ll see you guys later?

SOOYOUNG: Maybe just Tiffany. I have somewhere that I need to be with my dad. I’ll just see you tomorrow?

JESSICA: Tomorrow? It’s Saturday

SOOYOUNG: I know. I’m bringing you somewhere. Just wait for my call

JESSICA: Where are we going?

TIFFANY: Oh my god, just stop asking questions and get to your class

JESSICA: Ugh, screw you guys. Fine. See you

JESSICA disappears from the stage. SOOYOUNG just stares to where JESSICA was headed a while ago. TIFFANY turns to SOOYOUNG

TIFFANY: You haven’t told her, haven’t you?

SOOYOUNG: No…

TIFFANY sighs and an intense slow tempo kicks in

SOOYOUNG: Tell me, how could I…

TIFFANY: You need to before it’s too late

SOOYOUNG: But how is she going to react?

Can she handle it?

Can I?

TIFFANY: Sooyoung…

SOOYOUNG: I know, I will

TIFFANY: When?

SOOYOUNG: Soon… on the right sunrise. On her definite sunrise

The lights slowly dimmed down, only highlighting on SOOYOUNG. The song slowly fades down,

                          SOOYOUNG: On her definite sunrise…

Lights out.

SCENE 3

Lights .

SOOYOUNG and JESSICA walked onto the stage and SOOYOUNG spreads out a blue blanket for them to sit on. JESSICA sat down with a slightly pissed face and SOOYOUNG laughs and wraps another blanket around her. They were there to watch sunrise together

SOOYOUNG: Okay, what is it now?

JESSICA: I am not liking this

SOOYOUNG: Why not? It’s a good day

JESSICA: All I want is to stay home and sleep. That’s what makes it a good day for me.

SOOYOUNG: Why are you acting like a baby?

JESSICA looked at SOOYOUNG in disbelief and slightly flicks her forehead

SOOYOUNG: (flinches) WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!

JESSICA: That is for calling me a baby. And another thing, excuse you, YOU were the one who acted like a child when I refused to go out this morning. I can’t believe you called me at dawn just to watch sunrise with you. That was supposed to only be your thing. Not mine

SOOYOUNG: Because you’re so hard-headed. Can’t you be a morning person just for once? And also from now on, this is going to be our thing. You really need to see the beauty of sunrises

JESSICA: I’m only a morning person when it comes to 8am classes. Not because I want to, but because I had to. Stupid thing, why do morning classes exist honestly

SOOYOUNG: You are seriously one spoiled brat

JESSICA rolls her eyes and gave SOOYOUNG a slight punch on her shoulder before letting out a slight giggle. SOOYOUNG placed her head on top of JESSICA’s head. Just then, the lights dimmed showing the sun slowly starting to rise

SOOYOUNG: Look Sica, it’s coming up

JESSICA: This better be worth it or I swear I’ll kick your

SOOYOUNG lets out a small smile and had their eyes fixed towards the sunrise. A slightly slow tempo melody sips in, telling that it is going to be one cheerful morning day. JESSICA almost had her eyes closed due to sleepiness when SOOYOUNG nudged her and pointed her fingers up at the run rising

SOOYOUNG: Come my friend, it’s a new day. Look the sun, it rise again

Say hello to bright Saturday, and Goodbye to sleep away

See my friend, it’s a good day. Cold ahead, the heat awaits

Sure, sweet dreams taste better then. But this one is worth the wait

Give a chance and give a try. Your eyes will see where beauty lies

And you’ll see the bright sunrise. Up the clouds in the high sky

Make a change you’ll understand. Just like how I did with mine.

And you’ll see the bright sunrise. Up the clouds in the high sky

Song ended.

JESSICA who was sleepy, was suddenly so awake because the view was breath-taking. She sat up from SOOYOUNG’s shoulder and had her eyes focused on the sun slowly rising up. She couldn’t take her eyes off of it

JESSICA: Wow…

SOOYOUNG: Mesmerizing, isn’t it?

JESSICA: Yeah. Oh my god I didn’t expect it would be this beautiful

SOOYOUNG: I told you so. Glad that I dragged you out huh?

JESSICA: (rolls her eyes) Ugh, whatever. Let me enjoy this so I’ll like it more

Pause

SOOYOUNG: I mean it, you know

JESSICA: What?

SOOYOUNG: This, Sunrise. Being our thing

JESSICA: Why are you being so sentimental all of a sudden?

SOOYOUNG: I’m just saying that it’s a great offer. We’ve been bickering, so why not have positive things in our lives for once?

JESSICA: And now you’re being optimistic

SOOYOUNG: Okay do you want to do this or not?

JESSICA: I do. I do

SOOYOUNG: Good. That’s already a good start

JESSICA: Yeah, I guess it is. It is rather beautiful. I don’t mind waking up to this everyday

SOOYOUNG: Well, you need to know that the best time of everyday is before 7 in the morning.

JESSICA: I like that. That’s could be a new life quote

SOOYOUNG giggled and nods his head. JESSICA placed her head back onto his shoulder. Lights out

SCENE 4

Lights on.

Both JESSICA and SOOYOUNG walked into the stage and the scene shows an interior of a car as SOOYOUNG and JESSICA made themselves comfortable on the seat. SOOYOUNG was on the driver’s seat

JESSICA: (pinches her nose) you really got to change your car air freshener. The smell is too strong for my liking, it’s killing me

SOOYOUNG: It’s MY car, I’ll have whatever I want thank you

JESSICA: How can you live with this smell??? It’s way too strong! Can’t you go for something softer and fruity?

SOOYOUNG: That’s so feminine for my liking. That is definitely so your type. I’m not going for that

JESSICA: Are you saying I have a bad taste?

SOOYOUNG: I’m saying that this is all neutral and like a slight men territory. Sounds and smells more masculine.

JESSICA: Well, too bad for you. I don’t like it

SOOYOUNG: You’re going to miss it when I’m gone

JESSICA: What?

SOOYOUNG: I said you’re going to miss it when it’s gone

JESSICA: (laughs) who are you kidding? As long as you’re here, this thing is going to stay too. And I’m stuck with you for as long as we both live, that’s unfortunate

SOOYOUNG: (laughs) true enough. You only live once, yeah?

SOOYOUNG smiles at JESSICA as she continues to pinch her nose to avoid the smell.

Lights dimmed.

ACT 2

SCENE 5

Lights on. JESSICA is in the writing room again. Solely focusing on her laptop as she continues typing before leaning back, looking at the audience again.

JESSICA: If I look back onto every words she said, or every acts she was doing. She was already showing me the signs. Clear signs. But I guess I was just too ignorant. Too selfish. Too self-centered, to even think about it. I was an idiot. Till’ now, I still am an idiot. The fact that I’m writing about it makes me an idiot because last time I was trying so hard to forget and now I’m reliving it.

JESSICA wipes off some dust on her keypad, blowing it off. There was a slight pause when suddenly there was a short spraying sound was heard.

JESSICA: (inh
