One – Coconut White
The Case
The police station was always a bit busy, with officers moving around, and people coming in for help. But up in the second floor, where most of the investigation divisions were at, things were calmer.
Each team of detectives worked hard on their cases, and things kept moving even though it wasn’t as busy as the ground floor. But it was definitely more exciting. All those people were in the middle of solving crimes, and helping the streets become safer.
Of course, not every detective had the privilege and luck to work on something important and thrilling. Rookie detectives Kim Jongdae and Kim Minseok worked hunched over their desks, doing some simple – but essential – paper work, their minds filled with envy. It had been a good time since they got promoted to the second floor, but they were still called rookies, and treated as so. They were always assigned the smaller cases, the meaningless ones that no other detective wanted to take care of.
Most of their days they spent on their desks, being bored while doing paperwork no one else were willing do to. Whenever their phone rang, it was like a blessing, although they knew it would be the same stupid case, it was better to be out solving it than stuck inside the entire day.
“Hello?”
Minseok held the phone with his left hand, and started to write down something on a loose piece of paper. Jongdae waited patiently, wondering if that call would be that day’s chance to escape all that desk work.
Minseok smiled, thanking whoever it was on the other side of the line, and finishing the call.
“We got a case!”
He finally addressed Jongdae, who looked just as relieved as him. The two started putting the papers aside and got up, giving each other a fist bump before taking their coats off the back of their chairs and walking to the stairs.
As Minseok scribbled on his little pad, Jongdae addressed the middle aged lady in front of them. She looked incredibly distressed and agitated, but she was still able to pay attention.
“Let me get this straight ma’am. The last time you saw your dog, err, Coconut,”
Jongdae hesitated with the name, but got a nod from both the lady and from Minseok, who had written in down.
“was last night, before you went to sleep.”
He got another nod when his sentence was finished, and so he carried on.
“And you firmly believe that – instead of running away or getting lost –”
Jongdae and Minseok exchanged a desperate look, their famous ‘I don’t want to be here’ look, and Jongdae turned back to the woman to finish his sentence.
“You are certain that your neighbor… Stole your dog?”
Jongdae was having a very hard time not sighing. He was used to them getting silly minor crimes cases, but that was just borderline stupid.
“Have you tried speaking with said neighbor ma’am? Has he said anything for you to think that?”
Minseok asked, looking up from his notepad, already putting his pen down, knowing it was useless to take notes on that.
“No way!”
The woman screeched, the sudden loud and aggressive tone slightly scaring the two detectives and causing them to flinch.
“All he does is lie to me, and call me crazy. I’m not crazy! I know he took my Coconut! He took my baby! You should arrest him!”
The lady was starting to get extremely worked up, and Jongdae started trying to get her to calm down; and was almost successful, But she suddenly screamed once more, so loud that it made both detectives jump again.
“There he is!!! The felon, the outlaw!! Dog thief! Give back my Coconut!!”
The woman screamed at the top of her lungs, dashing by the two men towards the fence, ready to jump over it and assault her neighbor, who had just arrived home.
Luckily, Minseok was faster, dropping his pen and pad and rushing to restrain her, holding her arms back and keeping her in place, despite her strong attempts to get free.
“You crazy old lady! Leave me alone!”
The man screamed back, before going right into his home, not looking interested to know who Minseok and Jongdae were.
His comment made the lady try to go for him again, even stronger now, but Minseok already had a close hold on her, so she barely budged.
“Calm down ma’am. Let us handle this.”
He said, getting her attention back, but not getting her to relax at all.
“Go back into your home. We’ll speak to your neighbor.”
Jongdae said, approaching the two.
“You have to search his house! He’s probably hiding my Coconut in there right now!”
