Chapter Three

Querencia

Pika muttered under her breath, cursing one Boo Seungkwan as she hurried down the earthy passage. She had slept in, they had Quidditch tryouts this morning and she had been so smart to miss her wake up call. It was all the Gryffindor boy’s fault. She would have woken up on time if she had slept when she meant to, but of course Seungkwan would have none of that. He wanted a meeting on the very first night. Pika shuddered as she thought of what Chanyeol would do to her. The angled passage finally came to an end, and Pika slipped out from behind the barrels, the Hufflepuff common room door sliding shut behind her.

She quickly made her way past the big still life painting and the kitchen, her tummy grumbled and watered, but alas she had no time for breakfast. A couple of passages and staircases later, she was finally outside on the school grounds. Breaking into a run she headed towards the Quidditch field. It was a rather sunny day and Pika envied the other students who were enjoying their last day off before the official start of the school semester. She wanted to laze around and enjoy the last sunshine of the year as well, but a devil in the form of an overly tall sixth year was waiting for her.

Pika finally saw the field around the corner, there seemed to be no broomsticks in the sky. She prayed that by some miracle the tryouts hadn’t started yet and that she would manage to slip into the locker rooms and change before the captain would realize that she was missing. But as she finally neared the field, a surprising scene greeted her. Her fellow teammates, and at least another dozen students, were standing close by, looking at to two figures intently. Pika was quick to slip into the crowed, scrunching her eyes to see what everybody else was looking at, but her short figure wouldn’t allow it. She turned to her right to see that Hoseok was standing beside her.

“What’s going on?” she asked him, she could now hear the distant shouts of two voices over all the whispers around her.

Hoseok looked down at her. “Where have you been?”

“I slept in, is that Chanyeol shouting?”

Hoseok was quick to nod his head. “It appears that the Ravenclaws also booked the field for today.”

“But Chanyeol…”

“Is fuming.” Hoseok finished for her.

Sohee, the Hufflepuff Chaser, was quick to shoo the other spectators away and Pika could finally make out what was going on. The Ravenclaw Quidditch team were standing on the other side of the field, looks of fear, similar to the ones the Huffs held, on their faces. Both teams stared at the two shouting figures in the middle of the field.

“I booked the field for today!” Chanyeol shouted in his deep voice, his tall body towering over the Ravenclaw captain. Yerin might have been shorter than him, but she had an equally fiery temper to match his.

“I clearly remember that the field is booked for Ravenclaw today.” The girl retorted back. Pointing her finger at the younger’s firm chest.

“Guys, please calm down.” A faint voice begged, and Pika craned her neck to see Minseok, trying to push his body between the angry captains to make them stop fighting. “We’re all mature people here, let’s not say something we’ll regret later.”

“Shut it Kim!”

“This has nothing to do with you Minnie!”

Pika winced for the poor boy, he was only trying to help. She turned away from the scene when she heard a silent chuckle close to her ear. She turned to the source with disbelief. “Are you laughing?!”

At least Hoseok had the decency to appear slightly ashamed, before a grin broke out on his face. “Come on! As if you don’t enjoy watching Chanyeol being tortured.”

The younger shook her head and looked at Sohee who was looking at Hoseok with an equally appalled look. “Sohee?” Pika asked.

“Don’t worry. Jimin already went to get madam Hooch.” The older girl replied and Pika sighed in relief.

Moments later the said woman was running towards them, whistle blowing. A flustered looking Jimin was right behind her. “What are you two doing?!” The woman asked, clearly out of breath. “Two Quidditch captains behaving like this, it is outrageous.”

“But Professor!”

Madam Hooch was quick to silence them both. “Both Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw are banned from using the field for a week.”

“Professor!” Yerin shouted in a scandalized voice.

“Would you rather I take away house points from you Miss Kim?” Yerin was quick to bite the rest of her retort.

“Now both captains shake hands and leave the field at once.”

The two captains reluctantly stretched out their hands, and Yerin had to bite her lip to stop herself from wincing because of Chanyeol’s tight hold. It felt like he wanted to crush her hand. She looked to see him smiling, and realized that that was indeed what he had wanted to achieve. She gave him a sweet smile before she sneakily stretched her foot out and kicked his shin when Madam Hooch was not looking. The giant bent down in pain, and Yerin smirked before she turned and walked stubbornly away. Chanyeol muttered incomprehensible words after her, before he too turned around and limped away.

A sweating Minseok finally fell to the ground after they had left. “Captains…”

The Gryffindor common room was eerily quiet, and for once Seulyi did not need to fight anyone to get the comfy armchair near the fireplace. Most of her fellow housemates were outside but she just wanted to spend some time on her own. Jackson, her best friend, had been ignoring her since breakfast. He had gulped down his French toast and orange juice, Seulyi doubted that he even chewed it, and leapt out of the grand hall before she had even taken one bite. Seulyi wanted to pretend that she didn’t care about what he did, but he was her friend, of course she cared!

The girl took the cushion on the coach and punched it a couple of times. “Stupid,” punch, “Jackson,” punch, “Wang!”

She was so immersed in her fight with the innocent thing that she didn’t notice the presence beside her until it cleared its throat.

“So are you having a bad day or are you just mad that the cushion isn’t comfy enough?” Yeon chuckled, causing Seulyi to look up and blush.

“Bad day,” she muttered the reply.

“Jackson?”

“How did you-?”

“I saw him at breakfast this morning Seulyi,” Yeon answered as she took a seat close to the younger. “He was eating like a bunch of dementors were chasing him.”

Seulyi snorted, so she hadn’t been wrong in thinking that Jackson was trying to spend less time with her. She punched the cushion again, saying a dozen things in her head to Jackson Wang… things that were better off not being said out loud.

Yeon smiled a little as she watched her reaction, honestly her two younger friends were so cute. Jackson was so helplessly in love and Seulyi obviously cared for him, even if she didn’t want to admit it.

“Even if you guys had a fight, I’m sure he’ll come around. You two are best friends after all.” Yeon smiled kindly before she saw her watch. “Oh I’m heading out to see Dia and Myungsoo, will you be ok by yourself?” the question had barely left before Seulyi had clutched onto her arm. All previous sadness had disappeared from her face and her eyes were now sparkling.

“Can I come with you?!”

“Sure?”

The younger hurdled to the door, dragging a very confused Yeon behind her.

Out in the school grounds, Hye yawned as Yugyeom shifted a little beside her and ruffled the pages of the book he was apparently reading.

“You’re holding it upside down.” Hye snorted and Yugyeom quickly flipped the book.

“Thanks.”

“I can’t believe we’re out here spying on those two when we could be doing so many other things.” Hye moaned as she took a short glance at the couple they were supposed to be looking at. Yep they were still in the same position as they had been for the last hour. Sitting next to the lake, their shoes and socks thrown aside as they dangled their feet into the cool water.

“Hey! This was your brother’s idea!” Yugyeom retorted as he shuffled around again. They had been sitting on the patch of grass all morning and it was starting to irritate his arms. He scratched at the rash that was starting to appear and cursed in his mind at the boy who was causing him so much pain. Who ever said that pranking people was an easy feat to do?! They were risking their health and safety here! He and his best friend had been order to follow the two senior prefects around for information, but the pair had yet to do anything interesting. It was as he was thinking about a lovely spell to use on one Boo Seungkwan, that he noticed a figure passing them.

“Jungkook!” Yugyeom whisper-shouted, the boy waved at them and turned to keep walking but Yugyeom was going to have none of that. He quickly jumped up from his seated position and threw himself at the Gryffindor boy. “Hey Buddy!” he smiled, ignoring Jungkook’s suspicious gaze. “Glad that I found you here! I just remembered that I have this thing that I need to do for class, and I can’t leave Hye alone here by herself; so be a gentleman and take my place, ok?”

“What are you talking about? Our classes haven’t even started yet.” But Jungkook was talking to thin air because Yugyeom had already jogging towards the castle.

“You can go,” Jungkook turned to see Hyesun smiling at him. “I can take care of them by myself. I mean it’s not like they’re doing anything interesting.”

“Nah,” the boy answered as he sat down on the grass beside the girl. “You’ll die of boredom by yourself. So who are we watching?”

Hye pointed to a laughing pair by the lake and Jungkook squinted to see Myungsoo and Dia. “And here come some company for them.” He pointed out as two people from his own house joined the two.

“Stop splashing Myungsoo! You’re going to get my school robes wet!” Dia scolded the boy, yet she couldn’t help the smile that broke out on her face. Said boy chuckled a little before he stopped what he was doing. It had been such a good morning for him. The weather was nice, no school work needed to be handed in, and of course he was spending some time was his close friend. Myungsoo laid back on his hands and closed his eyes, letting himself be basked by the nice warmth of the autumn sun. However his happiness was short lived as he felt a shadow over his body, he opened his eyes to see Yeon standing next to him.

“Hey Yeon,”

“Hello Yeon.” Dia greated her friend with a smile.

The Gryffindor girl smiled in reply as she sat down and it was only then that Myungsoo noticed the figure that had been standing behind her. He gulped as he realized it was the same Gryffindor girl from before, Seulyi was it? Was she following him?!

“Hello Seulyi,” Dia greeted the new addition and Myunsoo realized that he had indeed remembered the girl’s name right. The younger girl waved weakly at them before she too sat down, on the only free spot that happened to be right next to Myunsoo. He didn’t want to seem like a coward but he couldn’t fight the urge to tilt away from her and slip closer to Dia. He didn’t miss the frown that formed on the younger girl’s face, and wondered in vain what on earth he had done to make her angry this time?

The next minutes were pure awkwardness for Myungsoo. He could hear Dia and Yeon making small talk from his side, yet he and the younger girl beside him sat in complete silence. They had not said one word to each other and with every minute that passed, Myungsoo became surer that the Gryffindor girl held a very strong disliking of him.

The silence between them was becoming suffocating for him. He had never been one to be disliked by others and he was intrigued as to why this girl hated him so much. So he gathered all the bravery that his Ravenclaw self did not possess, and decided to talk to her.

“Hey, I’m Myungsoo.” He was expecting the other girl to ignore him, or worse yet, give him another one of her menacing looks but instead he was surprised. The girl looked at him and then turned away shyly when their eyes met. And was that a blush on her face?!

“Seulyi,” she muttered in a small voice.

For the first time Myungsoo smiled at the girl, and was happy to see that she replied to him with a matching beam of her own. Maybe she wasn’t so bad after all.

“I thought I would find you here!”

Mark looked up from the book he was reading, startled at the loud voice that echoed through the hall. “This is a library Heejin.” He reprimanded his younger cousin as she took a seat next to him.

The other girl gave a small shrug as she snatched away the book he was reading. Mark sighed at her. Too bad she was one of his favorite cousins, he could never say anything mean to her. “What are you even doing here? Shouldn’t you be with Minseok?” he asked.

“He has Quidditch practice,” Heejin replied indifferently, completely missing the teasing tone that Mark had used. “What is this book anyway?” she asked as she passed the said thing back to her cousin. The book was in a language she couldn’t understand, she had no idea what it was about.

“It’s in Latin,” he answered her unasked question, closing the leather book and placing it back in his bag. “A Tuan family heirloom, father wants me to study it.”

Heejin couldn’t help but shudder a little at that. It’s not that she didn’t trust and love her cousin, because she did. She knew better than anyone that the dark magic rumors about Mark were all bogus. But after hearing the word heirloom, she couldn’t help but remember the odd objects she had seen around the Tuan family mansion when she visited her aunt’s house…even she couldn’t deny that their family’s past was well, a little…fishy.

Mark could see the smallest hint of hesitance on the girl’s face, he was about to call her out on it when a new presence at their table disturbed him.

“Hello my dear cousins.” Hyunmi greeted cheerfully. At least she had remembered to whisper in the library. Mark smiled slightly at his other favorite cousin. He was happy to see her, and for once she was by herself and not with her greasy boyfriend, which could only be a good thing in his book.

Hyunmi took a seat, and almost instantly the slightly awkward atmosphere disappeared. The three cousins sat around the table talking, before an angry looking Madam Prince, the librarian, asked them to leave if they were not going to study. They walked out of the hall, Heejin laughing slightly as Hyunmi apologized profoundly to the librarian for braking the school rule. Once they were back in the corridors Mark was quick to say that he had business in his room before he swiftly walked away. Hyunmi waved at him, but Heejin was once again sporting a confused look on her face.

“Is everything alright?” Hyunmi asked, detecting her cousin’s discomfort almost at once.

Heejin turned to her older cousin and gave a slight nod. “I’m fine. It’s just sometimes… I worry about him…”

Before Hyunmi could ask why, a figure had hurdled himself at her, wrapping his arms around her petite body. Hyunmi smiled as all thoughts of her cousin left her mind and she only focused on her grinning boyfriend.

Woohyun was bending his neck to kiss her, when he felt a scorching gaze on his face. He looked up to see Heejin staring at them intently. “Uh, hello Heejin?” he asked, hoping that she would get the message and stop glaring. But the Hufflepuff girl only nodded and continued looking at them with a thoughtful look.

Sensing her boyfriend’s discomfort Hyunmi also turned to her cousin. “Shouldn’t you be going to look for Minseok or something?” she politely asked, not wanting it to seem like she was ushering away the other girl to spend time with her boyfriend… even though that was exactly what she was doing.

“Oh, don’t mind me.” Heejin replied. “Minseok says that I need to open up to love more so I’m just observing the two of you. Please do continue.”

Hyumin raised an eyebrow and Woohyun just shrugged. It wasn’t as if he was going to pass a chance to kiss his girlfriend just because someone was watching them, he was far too greasy to care. He bent his neck again but stopped once more when he heard a throat being cleared.

“How long do you need to be dating to be able to just kiss each other, whenever?” Heejin asked curiously, the couple looked at her in disbelief. Was that a parchment and quill in her hand?! What was she doing? Taking notes?!

Woohyun groaned as he lay his head against Hyunmi’s and whispered in her ear. “I liked it better when she ran away from us.” The girl could only nod in agreement.

“Ow! You ungrateful little-” Sohee cursed as she on her bleeding finger, she couldn’t believe that her little overweight barn owl had scratched her finger because she refused to give a snack to him. It’s not like Sohee was doing it to be mean, but her owl seriously needed to cut back on the snacks. “Come on Daisy,” she begged her pet. “I need to get this letter to mum and dad so they can rest assured that I’m alive. You know how they get! Work with me here…”

But her pleading voice was ignored by the still angry owl. Sohee groaned before she finally swept a hand in her pocket and took out the treat reluctantly. “Fine. Have it your way.” She gave the owl a stinky eye as he swept down, snatched the treat from her hand and flew out of the Owlery with her letter. “Don’t come crying to me when you become too fat to fly!”

Sohee heard a chuckle from behind her and turned to see the face of the handsome Gryffindor Keeper, Jongin, if she wasn’t mistaken.

“Do you always shout at owls?” he asked, a shy smile on his face.

“No,” Sohee mumbled. “Daisy is a special case. He likes to get on my nerves.”

The boy took a step closer to her as he stretched his hand to call one of the school owls down to attach his letter to its leg. “He? Isn’t Daisy a weird name for a male owl?”

“It’s a nickname.” Sohee replied. Not even sure why she was talking so freely with a guy who was practically a stranger to her.

“For..?”

“Dickstick.”

Jongin choked on his spit, coughing lightly. “Interesting name…” he finally managed to say. The girl seemed somewhat proud of the name, and Kai couldn’t help but smile at her. “So what’s your name?”

“Sohee.”

“I’m Jongin, nice to meet you.”

Jinyoung flipped through the charms textbook as he took small bites of his lunch. Sure Jackson and Jaebum would probably call him a bookworm or a teacher’s pet for reading the schoolbook before classes had even officially started, but Jinyoung couldn’t help it. He was a Ravenclaw after all. A fifth year Ravenclaw who would have his O.W.L.s coming up shortly. He turned the page, but got distracted as a huffing Elea slipped into the chair opposite of him.

“What’s wrong?” Jinyoung asked as the girl took some food into her plate. But instead of eating it she was busy looking around. As if someone was watching her. “Are you all right?”

“I think I finally managed to run away from him.” Elea replied, her eyes searching the faces in the grand hall suspiciously.

“Who?” Jinyoung asked confused.

“BamBam.” The girl replied as she took a bite from her lunch, head still popping up to scan the perimeter every few minutes. “He’s been following me all morning. It’s starting to freak me out.”

“Aw,” Jinyoung cooed as he reached across the table and pulled her cheek. “Does someone have a crush on you?”

Elea slapped her friend’s hand away and scowled. “It’s not like that Jinyoung. I’m telling you he’s acting weird. It’s almost as if he’s spying on me. As if he’s waiting for me to do something.”

“Like what?” Jinyoung replied, one eyebrow raised. He found it hard to believe that someone as cute as the fourth year could be up to anything suspicious.

Elea shrugged her shoulders, not knowing the answer to that question either. Instead she focused on her lunch instead. Only stopping when Jinyoung leaned forward once more to whisper something to her.

“The club… The first meeting is tonight at eight. Yerin said that we should all go individually or in groups of two or three as to not draw attention to ourselves. Be there on time.” He paused for a beat, before he continued with a chuckle. “And make sure that lover boy doesn’t follow you.”

He quickly squatted back into his chair, before the angry girl could do anything to him.

“Darn Sehun and his never ending questions,” Kimmi muttered under her breath as she climbed up the staircases to the fifth floor. She checked her watch, she was already ten minutes late. She should’ve left the Slytherin common room earlier, but a suspicious Sehun had stopped her at the last second. Asking where she was going and why Youngjae had been missing for the past fifteen minutes when he had said that he only wanted to use the bathroom. Kimmi shook her head at her other friend’s excuse. Really? The bathroom? Choi Youngjae was far too creative.

It had taken Kimmi a good fifteen minutes before she finally managed to slip away from her best friend, and even then she had decided to take the longer root to the fifth floor, just too make sure that no nosy person was following her.

She was so focused on her watch that she was hardly looking at where she was going, which was probably not a smart idea since she felt a soaring pain in her forehead a few moments later.

“Ow!” she exclaimed as she brought a hand to rub the aching spot, she finally looked up to see a guy in a similar position to hers. Except that he was wearing a smile, contradictory to her frown.

“We need to stop meeting like this.” Jae chuckled and Kimmi could literally feel the blood that rushed to her face. Why did this boy have such an effect on her?!

“Y-yeah,” she stuttered as she realized that he had remembered her from the train, the Park Jaehyung actually remembered her.

“You’re a Slytherin, right?”

Kimmi grimaced at his sudden question. Was Jae one of those Gryffindors? The ones that still kept a grudge from the hostility that had once existed between their houses? “Yes?” she answered hesitantly.

“I’ve seen you cheering for your boyfriend at the Quidditch matches last year.” The boy explained.

Kimmi looked at him, mesmerized by his sweet voice before his words finally settled in. “Boyfriend? What boy- oh you mean Sehun? He’s my best friend. I don’t have a boyfriend” she stumbled in her haste to explain that she was very single to him. Only realizing seconds later that the guy was probably only making small talk and didn’t even really care. The blush on her cheeks intensified, if that was even possible.

“Oh, well that’s good to hear.” He sent her a dashing smile. Wait, what?! “I hope I’ll see you around Kimmi,” and with that he walked off.

Kimmi stood frozen on her spot. Did he just say her name? How did he even know her name?! And why was her single status good news to hear?! She was lost in her thoughts until a group of loud first years passing her, brought her back to her senses. She looked at her watch. “Oh man!” she muttered as she broke into a jog, she was so late!

She stopped by the suit of armor on the fifth floor. Making sure that no one was around, she started to follow the instructions she had been told. ‘I want to get into the DA meeting,’ she chanted in her mind as she paced the length of the corridor three times with her eyes closed. She opened them again to see a polished door that had not been there before. Without wasting any more time, she pulled the handle and slipped in.

She door closed shut behind her as she stepped into a spacious room, the only light coming from the torches that flickered from the walls. In the orangey dim light she could make out three bookcases that were filled with books, and shelves that had weird looking instruments on them. A couple of large silk cushions were thrown on the floor, and the occupants of them all looked up as she walked towards them.

“So nice of you to join us Kimmi,” Yerin said sarcastically, and Kimmi could only mutter a silent ‘sorry’. The older girl only shook her head. “Since you were running late we already took the liberty of picking your partner for the meetings. The two of you will be practicing together from now on.”

Kimmi nodded her head as she started to walk towards Ypungjae, expecting her best friend to have picked her to be his partner, but stopped when she saw the sheepish boy sitting with Myungsoo by his side. ‘Sorry’ Youngjae quietly mouthed at the scandalized look Kimmi gave him. Kimmi looked around confused at the other prefects that had been already paired. “Then who am I-”

“You’re paired with Mark,” Sunggyu answered her unasked question, and Kimmi gulped as she turned to meet a pair of cold eyes.

A/N: Looks like the Dia - Myungsoo - Seulyi love triangle will follow us in every story xD so any thoughts on how things are going so far?
