Chapter 7 - Not working.
Collision: A Broken & A Frozen HeartKim Jongin lay on his bed, at a loss on what to do.
He really did not want to meet Soojung again, something
always stirs inside him when he sees her face. Maybe it’s
the intense dislike for her. Or the fact that she’s so emotionless
it irks him. However, he also did not want Nayeon to think that
he was still in love with her, especially when she’s clearly moved on.
Frustrated, he tousled his hair and vented his anger by kicking a poor
pillow. He sat up.
No. I absolutely cannot lose to her. I’ll have to prove it, somehow. Even
if I don’t like Soojung. But how?
Exactly. How was he going to do it? This was not going to work. He
needed a plan.
Jung Soojung sighed. Why was there an unsettling feeling in
her heart? She couldn’t pin point anything. And the weird
thing was, she was 100 percent sure that it was something
to do with her cousin. She snapped her fingers consecutively,
trying to think of what made her feel that way. When she
couldn’t, she assured herself that it was nothing. Her cousin
had always given her uncomfortable feeling since they were young.
Maybe it was because Nayeon had almost everything. She had a
boyfriend when Soojung was suffering, she had her parents with her,
she was rich. But there was one thing she didn’t have, a loving family.
Her family showered her with money, not love.
And to Soojung, she preferred her own life.
“Sejong. Where does Soojung work?”
The next day, the normally silent CEO surprised his friend
by starting the conversation.
“Soojung? Why? Are you interested in my sister?” Sejong teased him,
wiggling his eyebrows.
Relax, Jongin. Don’t let this get to you. It’s only for a few months.
“Yes. Where does she work?”
“I knew it! Your speech that day made me realise that you’ve fallen
for my sister. I approve of you. Just, please don’t hurt my sister. She
doesn’t deserve to be hurt anymore.”
Why do they always try to prevent her from getting hurt? Surely she
couldn’t be any different from the other? If Sejong and Sooyeon could
get through life being happy, why couldn’t she? What Jongin did not
know was the truth. If only he knew, he would have backed out. But he
didn’t, and he probably wouldn’t. His pride would not have been able
to handle it.
“Just tell me where she works, please.”
Jung Soojung rubbed her head. She couldn’t stop thinking about
what happened that day. She took a sip of her coffee and fixed her
gaze on her computer screen.
“Soojung! There’s something for you!” Sunyoung’s voice made her look up.
She realised that Sunyoung was carrying a bouquet in her hands,
and everyone was staring.
“Someone went flowers for you.” She smiled brightly.
Everyone gasped. There was somebody courting the Jung Soojung?
How much persistence did he have? There was especially someone
who was seething. Soojung had rejected him just a few days ago. Was
it because she preferred the apparently more courageous man?
Soojung took it silently.
These are for you. Hope you like them.
-Jongin
Soojung tried to mask her utter disbelief by casually placing them
on her desk and resuming her work. Inside, she was burning.
She really couldn’t comprehend what Jongin was thinking of.
Why did it seem like they could understand what each other was
saying just by looking into one another’s eyes, but trying to read
what was going on in his mind was like a asking a baby to read a novel.
Normally, Soojung would have discarded anything related to confessions
from men, and that was what she did. Everyone almost gasped again.
Only one person exhaled in relief. At least he had a chance.
Jongin stared at his feet. Did Soojung receive the flowers already?
Did she like them? Leaning forward and placing his hands on
his face, he sighed. He knew Soojung had trouble trusting people
and that flowers were not even the beginning. He hoped that she
would just soften up a bit. He could definitely do this. He just had
to try hard enough and pray that at the end of 6 months,
his pride would still be intact.
“Did my sister receive the flowers you sent?”
“How did you know that I sent flowers to her?” Jongin asked.
“It’s the most obvious thing in the world, Jongin. You’re still
here, and you asked where she works, it’s clear you were
going to send flowers to her.”
“I actually don’t know if she’s received them.” He replied dejectedly.
“You have her number, don’t you? Text her!” Sejong almost
wanted to whack his friend on the head for being so dense.
“What are you talking about? I don’t ha-” He paused mid
sentence when he realised that he did indeed have her number.
“Hello?”
“Jongin!”
“Sejong? Did you change your number?”
“No, this is my sister’s phone. Make sure you save her number.
So, rumor has it that the date went superbly well. My father
has suggested that you come around one day to have dinner with us.”
He whipped out his phone and searched for the unsaved number
in his call logs. He saved it under the name, “Jung Soojung”
and typed out a short and simple message for her.
To: Jung Soojung
Hey, have you received the flowers?
He locked his phone and waited. He did not know why he was
being so jittery while waiting for her reply. It was only Soojung.
He was not texting anyone of great importance yet he was
acting like that.
After a few minutes of what seemed like eternity, his phone
gave the long-awaited signal. She had replied.
From: Jung Soojung
I did.
Wait. That was it? Two words? Could she have been more
hostile? The man had to take several deep breaths to calm himself
down. He needed this.
To: Jung Soojung
Did you like them? Make sure to water them daily, they are real flowers,
just like my interest towards you.
Having sent such a mushy message, which was unlike him, he cringed
and writhed in embarrassment. To regain his pride, he had to lose them first.
Jung Soojung tutted in irritation. Just like interest towards you? There was
something going on with his mind. Maybe a screw became loose?
She turned to her side and stared at the flowers in the bin. They seemed
to gaze at her with puppy dog eyes, begging her to give them love and
care. It was like they were calling out to her. Why would Jongin send
her real flowers? Now that she knew those flowers had a life, she would
be forced to take care of them. She glanced at them once more before
punching out a reply.
To: Someone
No. I threw them away.
Kim Jongin felt like he was going to obtain high blood pressure when
he read the message. He guessed it was going to take more than just
flowers and sweet words to make her fall. He was prepared to go through
all that. He was prepared to lose him pride in front of Soojung. What
he was not prepared for was losing it in front of Nayeon, who will
assume he was still not over her.
Jung Soojung smiled as she sent the message. Seeing no response
from him, she presumed that he was frustrated. She continued
with her work, occasionally glancing at the flowers in a vase
with water on her desk.
The action was not missed by someone. He gritted his teeth,
seething in anger. Just who was the guy?
He was never going to lose to someone like that.
Never.
