Chapter 6 - Taunting.
Collision: A Broken & A Frozen HeartKim Jongin stared at the lady sitting diagonally
in front of him, beside Soojung. His eyes shifted
to the man smiling by her side. Her ‘fiance’. Had
she not said that she would be leaving for work?
Why did she come back engaged? Jongin was so
busy with his thoughts that he did not hear
Soojung calling him.
“Jongin?”
“Hmm?” He went back to reality and realised
that all of them were looking at him.
“My dad was asking you a question.” Soojung
forced a smile.
“Oh, sorry. What was your question?”
“I was telling Nayeon here that you were going
out with my Soojung. Tell us, what do you think
of her?” Soojung’s father grinned.
She’s nothing compared to my Nayeon and she
will never make my heart beat as fast again.
She’s an ordinary girl who has no emotions at all.
I will never like her. Not in a million years.
Jongin hesitated to answer as he glanced at Nayeon’s
smug face. As if she was doing it on purpose, she made
a big show of linking her arms with Dokyeom’s. He
gulped and his pride took over. He took a deep breath
and swallowed the words that were initially threatening
to come out.
“Soojung? To me, she is the most beautiful person
I have ever met. Nothing, no one can compare to her.
She is not only breathtaking on the outside, but also
on the inside. Her heart is the most precious thing.”
Jongin was taken aback. He did not expect such
honest words to flow out of his mouth like water. Just
what made him do that? And then he realised. He was
talking about Soojung, but his heart was beating for
Nayeon. He was not describing Soojung.
He was describing Nayeon.
If Kim Jongin was taken aback, then there would
be no words to portray how much shock Jung
Soojung had experienced. There was such sincerity
in his voice and she wondered, whatever made him
say those things about her? When clearly, he had
expressed his clear dislike for her. Unless, her intuition
was right. That he had an ulterior motive. She looked
at his face which was full of, pride. His eyes had softened
as he was speaking. Surely, it must be because of
another thing?
Mr Jung, also did not see it coming. He had thought
that Kim Jongin was cold, distant. Like his daughter.
It made him wonder why Soojung liked him, when
they were so alike. He kept quiet about it on their first
meeting because Soojung seemed to like him very much.
However, now, through the look in the man’s eyes, it was
evident that he was not a book to be judged by it’s cover.
Mr Jung eyes crinkled at the corners, he could rest assured
now, his daughter would be happy being with a man who
could see her for who she really was. Not Jung Soojung,
who doesn’t give a care in the world. Not Jung Soojung,
who has no emotions. But Jung Soojung, who is much
more fragile than she makes herself out to be, who,
underneath all that glares and stoic face, has a heart of gold,
who loves her family more than herself, and who deserves to be
loved for all she was worth. That was the Jung Soojung that
Mr Jung hoped Kim Jongin would be able to see, and
to him, he did.
“I like you, Jongin. I’m glad that you are able to accept
Soojung. I know it can be hard, but I do hope that you
will make her happy.”
Jongin snapped out of it when he heard Mr Jung say to
him. Every part of him was yelling in agony, telling him
to be true to himself. But what’s done cannot be undone. He
sneaked a peek at Soojung, who was staring at him with an
unreadable expression. It might have been meant to be difficult
to read, but somehow, one way or another, Jongin was
able to understand her.
What are you saying? What is your intention? I don’t
care what you say, I’m not falling for your act.
He shook his head. Trust Soojung to have trust issues. However,
he was secretly relieved that she wouldn’t believe him. He
did not know what to do if she has misunderstood.
He replied by staring straight at her, giving an insignificant smile
which no one would notice, but trust Soojung to do the opposite.
While everybody else was fawning over Kim Jongin’s seemingly
honest speech, Nayeon was not about to fall for it. She could
read him better than anyone in the room. The way he glanced
up at her while speaking? The way he visibly gulped before
speaking? Those were all tell-tale signs that he was
definitely thinking of her. She observed him as he and
her cousin shared a few looks that ,contrary to what Nayeon
thinks, was indecipherable. She took a sip of her drink and
slyly smiled, she was going to enjoy this.
----
“We have so much trash, it’s definitely going to make our house
reek. Can someone throw it out? I’m busy washing the dishes.”
From the kitchen, Soojung requested.
No one was saying anything. Sejong and Sooyeon were both
occupied with what they were doing. Sejong was texting someone,
and Sooyeon was doing her homework. Nayeon and Dokyeom
were in their own world, acting intimately, as if they were never going
to see each other again. The sight suffocated Jongin. He causually
stood up and volunteered, wanting to get out of the house for some fresh air.
“I’ll do it. Where’s the trash?” He walked into the kitchen, surprising
the girl. Jongin was the last person she’s ever presume to be up for the job.
“It’s going to be heavy, why don’t you go with someone?”
What was she doing? Why did she sound so concerned? Soojung
wanted to beat herself. She should have just pointed to where the
trash was. But since Jongin had the initiative to do it, she figured
why not be just wee bit kind?
“It’s fine. I can take it on my own.”
“I’ll do it.” The newcomer surprised both Jongin and Soojung.
“Nayeon, why? You are our guest. We shouldn’t make you do
these things.” Soojung smiled.
Jongin inwardly scoffed. Was he not a guest too? But then
again, he did volunteer.
“Please Soojung. I don’t mind doing it. Besides, I want to
get to know my cousin’s first ever boyfriend. Come on
Jongin, let’s go.” She dragged the unsuspecting male out,
along with the garbage.
Jung Soojung could do nothing but stare at their retreating
figures. Why did she feel that something was off? Somehow,
her hawk like eyes managed to capture Jongin’s body stiffening,
ever so slightly. She shrugged it off, maybe, just maybe, Jongin
was uncomfortable.
Nayeon grinned to herself. They were now out in the open, and
Jongin was walking silently next to her.
“You cannot fool me.” She broke the silence.
“Who’s fooling who?”
“You don’t like Soojung, let alone love her.”
“I like her. Who are you to say otherwise?” Jongin was obviously
trying to keep his cool.
“Prove it.”
Jongin went quiet again.
“See? You don’t love her at all. Why are you trying to hide it?”
“What are you saying? I-”
“Prove it Jongin. At the end of the year, I will be having my
wedding. Bring her there. If you really like her, you would be
in a relationship for a long time. I don’t want to see acting,
fake love. I want to see you in love with her. Truly. If you don’t,
then I guess you were lying. And we both know how much ego
you have. Remember. End of the year. Bye!”
With that, she skipped off happily, not wanting Jongin to
detect any sadness in her. As much as she was going to enjoy this,
she still felt down. She had to do this. She did love him.
But that was before. It was in the past. Dokyeom was her present and
her future. She wanted to see her first love happy as well. She wanted
him to move on. And this was the only way.
Kim Jongin was left in his thought. At the end of the year. How?
Just how was he going to make Soojung fall in love with him in
6 months?
