Chapter 3 - The date
Collision: A Broken & A Frozen HeartJung Soojung entered the not
-too-shabby-but-not-too-chic-restaurant,
not knowing what to expect. Was her date
going to be nice? Was he going to
understand that she would never be
interested? Or was he going to insult
her for not showing enough interest?
Inside the restaurant, Kim Jongin was also
wondering the same thing. He was not
interested in whoever was going to be seated
in front of him. He only came because his friend
forced him to.
She looked around to see if anyone matched the
description that her brother gave her.
“Handsome, tall, looks really scary, oh and if you still
cannot find him, he’s really tanned. So that would
probably help in locating your date.” There were a lot of
good looking men but there was one who stood out.
Like Soojung, he gave off that cold aura, the one that
indicated his lack of willingness to talk to anyone. He was
also extremely good-looking. And, he was less fair than
most of the patrons in the restaurant. She walked over to
him and asked,
“Sorry to bother you, but are you waiting for someone?” She
mentally cursed herself for forgetting to ask Sejong what
her date’s name was.
“Yes I am. I’m waiting for my date. This is not a bar, please
do not try to pick up men so shamelessly in such a fine restaurant.”
The man retorted.
Soojung felt offended. She wasn’t wearing anything inappropriate,
so why would he assume that she was here to hook up with guys?
Gritting her teeth, she walked away and whipped out her phone to
call her brother. Deep inside, she was desperately hoping that the rude
man was not her date.
“Sejongie, what’s the man’s name? I forgot to ask you before I left.”
“Oh, his name is Kim Jongin.”
Meanwhile, Jongin ,after being approached by the woman
who seemed to be in the wrong venue, was getting impatient,
He glanced at his watch and stood up. He was about to walk
past the lady on the phone when he heard her mutter his name.
“Kim Jongin?” Soojung mumbled, wondering who he was.
“I’m Kim Jongin. What do you want with me?”
“I’m your date.” What bad luck for the both of them who started
out on the wrong foot.
The duo sat opposite each other, not saying anything.
No one was trying to start a conversation. They ate their
foods silently. It would have continued on that way, with
Soojung not looking at the man, and Jongin staring at
Soojung, comparing her to his beautiful ex. She was
undoubtedly prettier, but Jongin was so in love with
his old flame, that in his heart, no one would come
close. The silence was broken with the ringing of Jongin’s
phone. He glanced at Soojung and answered it.
“Sejong. Why did you call?”
Hearing her brother’s name, Soojung looked at him.
He knew Sejong? Was Sejong the one who forced him
to go on a date? That brat. He clearly told her that
his friend knows someone who might go on a date.
He lied. When he hung up, Soojung decided to say
something.
“You know Sejong?” That clearly startled him, he must
not have expected her to speak.
Her tone was different from when she asked him a question
at the start. The first one was filled with uncertainty. It was soft,
almost melodious. But this, this was flat, emotionless, monotonous,
it wasn’t as pleasant to hear as the first one. Jongin
compared her voice to the ex. Then he stopped. Soojung was not
worthy of being put in the same category as her.
“Yes. He is my friend. Why do you ask?”
“I was just wondering how you knew my brother.” She calmly replied,
taking a sip of her drink.
Did that mean that the motherly figure in their family was her?
She was the one who constantly texted her brother, making
sure he had eaten? He would have expected someone a bit more, soft.
Someone who looked caring. She did not look anything like what he
had envisioned in his mind.
“ Are you the one who always asks him if he has eaten?”
She nodded. “He’s talked about me?”
“Yes. He described you as someone who wouldn’t date.”
When he heard no reply, he proceeded to ask,
“Why is it that you won’t date?”
Soojung quietly ate her meal.
“Is it because of your parents’ divorce? You shouldn’t let it
affect you. If you’re going to shut everyone away just because
of a divorce, you’re gonna end up alone. Also, you don’t actually
know what happened to them, so you should probably le-”
“Let me tell you something, Mr Kim Jongin. You do not
know me, I do not know you.
Therefore, I don’t go around judging you because, like I said,
I don’t know you. So, could you please not comment about
something that you are not familiar with? Unless that’s why you are
alone, because you are so insensitive.”
She went back to eating, this time, in a more hurried manner.
She wanted to get out of his sight. He was rude. He did not
care about other people’s feelings. Who was he to judge? Did he
know what she had been through as a child? No. She was right.
She shouldn’t have agreed to come. He was just another one
of those people who will never understand.
“You say you don’t judge. Yet you are assuming that I am
alone because of this. Is that not a bit contradicting?” Jongin’s voice
had now gone deep and cold. Almost similar to...Soojung’s.
“Listen. I’m not interested. You are clearly not interested as
well. Why not we just stop talking to each other and pretend
that we had fun on this date? I need to keep my father happy, you
need to tell Sejong that you also had fun, because he would
tell my father.”
“Why should I lie for you? I barely know you. I don’t care
if your father is not happy.”
“Fine. Don’t. Here’s half the bill. I’m leaving first.” Soojung had enough.
She stood up and left the man sitting there with a smirk on his face. She
was definitely better than the unethical woman who
had just left the restaurant.
Jung Soojung was walking in the alley leading to the main pedestrian
street. She saw a couple fighting and scoffed. Meeting Jongin
made her all the more certain that she should never give
her heart to someone else. They would just end up like them.
Fighting. Betrayal. There would be no one to trust. She scoffed once
more, she couldn’t believe how insensitive he was. Sejong
was friends with that kind of guy? She made a mental note to tell
Sejong to stay away from men like those. Why was he so
insensitive anyway? Did something happen to him as a child too?
Soojung was so deep in her thoughts that she didn’t realise the footsteps
behind her.
“Hey babe.” A man tried to her from behind.
Soojung spun around, shocked.
“Don’t touch me.” She tried to act tough but it was no use.
“Let’s have some fun tonight.”
