aeri is one you could call a wallflower. with her observant quiet eyes, she tends to notice the things one doesn't usually see such as hidden emotions and subtle actions. this is why it's easy for her to help and support others. she may be shy but aeri won't hesitate to help out emotionally or physically and she's happy to spent some time and energy with anyone who needs it. a hardworker, aeri puts her passion in everything she does. she is quite serious about completing a task or becoming better in something, hence why she was willing to train for so long. aeri firmly believes that the harder she trains the better the lives of her family becomes. aeri is also quite the artistic type, having being gifted with the ability to draw and paint. she enjoys going to museums and find it relaxing when she does art.

with her being artistic also comes her being imaginative. this comes in handy when aeri wants to draw something, but not so much when it comes to everything else. her mind tends to think most of these ideas that she'd often space out and wouldn't realize she was doing so. while aeri is always happy to help the people around her, ironically she does tend to get too altruistic. she doesn't want to burden people so she tends to refuse help even though it gets too much for her sometimes.

apart from being too altruistic, she is shy towards people she doesn't know much, hence why she doesn't want to tell people about her problems and is quite private. aeri has troubles making friends because of this. the fact that she's also sensitive doesn't really help. she doesn't really say anything about her feelings and prefers to keep it to herself. after being bullied at school, she's not very trusting easily and is suspicious of people when they try to get close to her.

before knowing more of aeri, it is necessary to start off with the life of her mother yoo chaeri.

back when chaeri was just a teenager, the kpop scene was just taking off and watching girl groups such as s.e.s and fin.k.l made chaeri want to do the same. luckily for chaeri, she was gifted with a beautiful voice which earnned her a spot in a newly established company. but perhaps it's the buzz of being in a big city like seoul or her then unruly personality that chaeri found herself getting further and further away from her dreams.
 

at the age of 17 chaeri found out she was pregnant, making her dreams of becoming a singer impossible. it didn't take long for her to get kicked out of the company. to make matters worse, her then boyfriend dumps her before aeri was even born. feeling hurt and wronged, chaeri promised herself not to let her baby pass through the same as her.

in gangwon, chaeri gives birth to her daughter yoo aeri on the 30th of june, 2001. to makes end meet, chaeri would take various jobs just to earn money. from waitressing to cleaning houses, she didn't hesitate to do whatever it is necessary just to see her aeri smile. while doing so, aeri was taken care of her grandparents.

despite her young age, little aeri was already aware of how hard her mother worked even though chaeri tried not to show her tiredness. because of this, aeri kept quiet about the bullying she had to endure back at school just because she didn't have a dad and because she wore hand me downs to school. kids could be vicious sometimes.

aeri's dreams of becoming an idol started in middle school when she realized how much music comforted her. she started thinking that maybe she could help people like her, lifting their spirits by simply singing songs. luckily for her she inherited her mother's gift of singing so she wouldn't have to have any vocal lessons and such. 

but much to her aeri's shock, chaeri had strongly denied to let her go to seoul. they have a close relationship but it wasn't like they don't fight. but this time, she was actually scared of her mother. for some reason, she got so mad at her and she didn't even get an explanation why. but chaeri has always been so soft for her daughter. after a conversation she had with her own parents about back then when they allowed her to move to seoul herself. in the end she did allowed aeri to audition when she turned 15 and even went to seoul with her. the smile on her daughter's face when she passed her audition was worth every hardship she's ever faced.

this give chaeri hope. maybe aeri will have better luck than her in the industry.

trainee life 
the training period was hell, but it wasn't like aeri didn't expect it to be exactly like that. after all, her mother was once a trainee too. no matter how much time has passed, there were still things that will never change when it comes to the training system kpop companies has. before moving to seoul chaeri has warned her that training was no joke. that she has to be strong mentally for it. that she was welcome back home anytime if she changed her mind. but hearing her mother say those things was what aeri precisely needed. she wanted to be a much stronger person and aeri knew she would be if she endured the training period.

still, there were a lot of times she had wanted to quit. the bullying she had to face back in school was much worse, but it didn't make her training any less than bad. she always had this anxiety of having less talent than the other, that her voice wasn't enough, etc. the constant stress of being a trainee was always on her mind, but the thought of her mother working hard doing various jobs just to make ends meet would always come up to her mind. aeri swears she's not going to let her mom struggle anymore. that one she debuts and manges to earn money, she'll finally take it easy.

luckily for aeri, her fellow trainees were mostly a delight to practice with. she must say, it did take her time to call them friends, and not all of them were as friendly as the others. but as they were suffering for the same dream they somewhat formed a bond that aeri will forever be grateful for. at the start of 16tv, aeri used to just stand around awkwardly or practice by herself but as time passes, her older or more energetic members would play with her on and off camera. by the end of the broadcast, you could see how much she's grown in all aspects.

first meeting 
when aeri got accepted in pledis, seventeen had just debuted so aeri never met any of the boys and most probably wont now that they'll have busy schedules, much to her delight. don't get her wrong, aeri admires her sunbaes a lot. but she knew if she met them she'll be starstrucked and make an embarrassment of herself, which is odd because they've literally just debuted.

fate likes to play with aeri because it didn't take long for her to meet some members of the boy group.

while seventeen were preparing for their mansae promotions, aeri was with seunghwa and some other older trainees when they stumble upon seungcheol, jeonghan and seokmin. it was awkward for aeri as she couldn't look them in the eyes. the boys didn't seem to notice though.

aeri didn't think of it any less than one of her embarrassing moments that she'll have to bury at the back of her mind when she's about to fall asleep.

interactions 
in all honesty, jeonghan didn't think he was fit to mentor someone. but whenever he sees yoo aeri he has this urge to help the younger girl not just when it comes to the industry, but in life as well. she painfully reminds him of what his trainee self used to be and if he had not gotten the support that he had from his friends, he wouldn't have had debuted with them. not that the female trainee doesn't try to befriend her, but jeonghan knew he had to push a little.

s tells him that it's a relief that he's aeri's mentor. 

jeonghan has a younger sister, which is why he treated aeri as such in the beginning. but the ever shy aeri couldn't even look at him in the eye without feeling embarrassed. still, jeonghan treated her with care like how he does to his sister.

seeing that he doesn't any ill intentions, it didn't take long for jeonghan to make aeri to feel comfortable with him. sometimes the members would catch them laughing by themselves, aeri even looks at jeonghan in the eyes now without feeling flustered. by the end of the program, they're comfortable that jeonghan even teases her like the way he teases his dongsaengs.

　• the girl doesn't hide the genuine smile that forms in her lips upon the mention of their debut. "i am slightly anxious, but mostly i am excited. very excited. i've always wanted to debut with the girls so i have no other words than to say other than i'm really excited!" she grins brightly.
