if you think about it, there's really nothing wrong with work hard. it just shows a person's determination to do better, but the ever so passionate jihae takes it to a whole new level sometimes. she's known to pass out and fall asleep in the dance studio and even hiding injuries just so she could continue doing activities with the group. it also doesn't help that she's very ambitious to the point that she'll do anything to debut. a workaholic, she's often described inside the walls of pledis. they could only wonder what will happen to her when she debuts.

jihae wasn't like it initially, but after years of training and failing to debut with pristin, jihae has become her own critic. she notices the small little things that she thinks are wrong. from the way she does a certain movement or how her voice cracks from doing a simple note. she's overly critical of herself, though she could also be very uptight when it came to others. jihae had been one of the longest trainees so she had no problem pointing the flaws in the group. she didn't want any of the girls to lack as much as she does, and she didn't want anyone to risk her potential debut. when she's like this, her girls would point out how the warm jihae could be very intimidating. despite all this, jihae doesn't deal well with criticism especially when it comes to her superiors. she tends to get emotional, though she hides it pretty well. jihae had always thought, since she was one of the oldest members, that she to act stronger than the younger members, hence why she hides her negative emotions and why she doesn't open up as much as she used to when she first started training. when she does open up slightly, jihae finds it often tiring that she'd end up spend time by herself.

in the cold winter evening of december 27th in 1996, kim jihae was born to kim hyunsoo and oh chunhwa. the eldest of two kids, her younger brother kim taewoo was born fours years after and despite having a relatively normal childhood, jihae would consider the birth of her brother the happiest moment in her life. they've always had a close relationship from the start.

from as long as she could remember, jihae had always shown interest in music. perhaps it was because her mom's love for trot songs that she'd often put the radio on in the mornings or the fact that the kpop industry started as she was growing up. either way, she has always loved to perform in school productions and such. a born performer as the people around her would describe the young girl, jihae knew that she had to stand on a real stage one day.

in attempts to further improve herself and her talents, jihae begged her parents to enroll her in a dance academy. thinking that it was going to be just a hobby of hers, her father complied not thinking much about it. at that point she already wanted to try out and audition but it wouldn't be until she turned 17 when she actually tried out.

her father was strict in the way that he thought having his family close-knit would be the best for all of them. he had opposed initially, not wanting his daughter to live in seoul, but her ever supportive mother helped a lot in changing his mind. so in her last year in high school, jihae tried out and was sucessfully accepted in pledis entertainment.

　• jihae had always loved her brother even if he declines her affections now that he's all grown up, claiming it to be embarrassing. afterall, taewoo was jihae's first friend, or atleast that's what she claims.  either way ever since jihae has left daegu, taewoo has been more affectionate towards his sister in his own little ways such us messaging her every day or having a meal with her when he's in seoul. ironically, despite being named after g.o.d's kim taewoo who is perhaps their mother's most favorite kpop star, taewoo didn't share his sister's dreams of becoming an idol and opted to studying engineering instead.

　• jihae had originally been a part of the line up for pristin and was even supposed to appear in the first season of p101, if she had not hidden an injury in the first place, making it impossible for her to even stand by the time they were about to record the first episode. she was ultimately pulled out in the last minute. despite being removed in the line up for pristin and their eventual disbandment, she still managed a friendship between the members most especially nayoung, siyeon, yehana and eunwoo.

　• being one of the longest trainees in the group, jihae has watched girls come and go, some of them she had made friends with already hence why it was hard for her whenever somebody leaves. this is perhaps the main reason why she cherishes her current members the most, cause she knew how hard it was for them especially since most of these kids where younger than her. despite her obvious love for her groupmmates, jihae doesn't hesistate to point out the flaws her girls have when practicing which often results to some of the girls getting intimidated of her at first. but if you know jihae long enough, you would know that she's an absolute er for her dongsaengs despite her getting strict at times.

　• as one of the longest trainees in the group, jihae had the opportunity to become close with her mentors back when they were fellow trainees. she's closest with the hyung line (with seungcheol being from the same hometown, her entering the company around the same time as jeonghan + jisoo, and her being the same age as 96line), but having a best friend like kwon soonyoung guaranteed jihae a close relationship with the younger members too such as chan, seokmin and seungkwan. she's quite close to the boys that there's an inside joke between her and the 96 line in which they insist (with soonyoung being the one most insistent, that cheeky bastard) that jihae is younger than them as she has been born in late 1996. tecnically, you're born in 1997, they'd tell her. but jihae refuses to call   soonyoung oppa, especially since jisoo doesn't even call either seungcheol or jeonghan hyung when their birthdays are just a few days away. instead, jihae calls them sunbae just to annoy them because they hate it when she does that as it was weird for them to be called that way from someone who trained alongside them.

trainee life 
jihae has always been enthusiastic when it came to training. she was so eager to know more, to learn more and to improve so it was somewhat breathe of fresh air when the excited jihae arrived in pledis when most of the trainees are either stressed or thinking of quitting. eager to fully embrace her new life, jihae immediately put her hundred percent from the start.

soon enough, jihae realizes that training to be an idol may have had more downs than ups. from seeing fellow trainees withdraw due to the stress, watching as seventeen's debut gets pushed further and further, the unnecessary diet they have to her own internal struggles and insecurities to do better. it seemed like an endless list. 

her breaking point came in mid-2015 to late 2015. she was just very elated for seventeen to finally debut. those thirteen boys deserved it after everything they've been through. but she also wanted to step on that stage as soon as possible. so when pledis announced that she'll be joining p101 with other female trainees she has been training with, she got so excited she did not mention the pain she was experiencing in her ankle nor did she show how weird she walked because of it. nobody really found out about it until literal days before the first shooting for p101 came and when she can't stand up. pledis had no choice but to pull her out of the program before she could even have the chance to appear.

with a cast on her foot, jihae had her breakdown at an empty dance studio in pledis. she was so emotional that all the negative emotions she has been building up just came at that moment.  the dancer has never been a stranger to body pains but this was the first time that she got a serious injury that it scared her greatly. apart from hating herself for being stubborn, the guilt ate her up because instead of being happy for the girls for appearing on national tv, she was jealous. for the first time, jihae had put herself first without her even knowing, without thinking of others. all of those negative feelings just because she knows that it's more likely that the female trainees who appeared in p101 would be the same ones to debut next.

soonyoung was the one who sucessfully convinced her to take a rest. jihae protested at first, but in the end, she went back to daegu and was taken care of her mother until she could finally walk again.

when she came back, apart from soonyoung asking for her help in a performance he needed to do, jihae was added to sixteen. at first, jihae was more calm compared to when she first started training. after all she was still healing emotionally, but the more she got back to her training routine, the livelier she got. it helped that she had such lovely and supportive members. by the time sixteen tv ended, she was known to be that unnie who helped with the choreographies and that member who enjoyed goofing off with the rest of members by playing with the cameras.

much like most of the members of seventeen, jihae and soonyoung first met while training. jihae has always been so excited to train, but apart from the classes she's going to have, she was looking forward to meet kids around her age that shared the same dreams as her so she was the first one to approach fellow trainees who were born in the same year as her. out of all the 96 line, soonyoung was the fastest she got close to - jun was too shy because. of his lack of confidence in korean, wonwoo was intimidating as hell despite soonyoung insisting that wonwoo's a big nerd and jihoon was scary (she has heard from that sunbae, a tall kid called mingyu that the smaller jihoon had tried to kill him off with a guitar, what the hell was that all about?). despite seventeen's ever growing busy schedules, soonyoung and jihae had always bonded, which caused them to grow closer. perhaps it's their mutual interest in dancing, movies and shinee that their friendship has never suffered.

interactions 
honestly, it surpised jihae that soonyoung was chosen as her mentor. though it is true that soonyoung and jihae work well together, their chemistry and ideas are like puzzle pieces as it matches perfectly, there is also the fact that they're the craziest, most annoying duo when they're together. jihae tends to forget that she has an image to maintain and that she's one of the oldest in sixteen when she's around soonyoung. after all, the seventeen member reminds her of her younger years, when she was so excited to train with the then pristin members, of that ugly green wall that they used to have in svt tv. it's hard to be uptight all the time when your best friend was kwon soonyoung.

their friendship has no filter even when the cameras are rolling that jihae sometimes worry that their relationship might be taken in the wrong way. one might consider their bond weird as they'd often bicker for a minute, then laugh their asses the next. despite being the root of seungcheol's headache, the two dancers are quite serious when it came to choreographing and helping out their fellow members.

if there was one thing s love about jeonghan the most, it is how reliable and supportive he is of his dongsaengs. he is the first person they go to when they're in trouble, or even just when they are down and they don't tell anyone because yoon jeonghan is that observant. he could tell s' feelings (or anyone really if he observes them enough) especially as they bond more and more. despite his constant support, jeonghan never expects anything in return as he truly love giving back and sharing his time and energy to family and friends. you could also trust jeonghan to always say the truth. he believes that there is no point in lying. he means everything he says despite him also having a teasing, playful side.

jeonghan has grown so much in the first year of his training to his current state. he used to not speak unless spoken to and would be caught in the camera just staring into the nothingness. the only people he used to talk to during his first month of training was jisoo and jihae. he was that shy. he does still say that whenever he meets someone knew, he'd be shy around them until they become closer. there are some traits he shares with jihae and that is how private and sensitive he is. he has the same reasoning at her, thinking that his position in the group as one of the oldest should make him one of the strongest emotionally. he also tends to take criticisms to the heart.
 

history 
a few months after jihae starts training in pledis, yoon jeonghan arrives and gets accepted as well. back then jeonghan wasn't as close to seungcheol as they are now, with reasons such  as seungcheol being intimidating as he has been the longest trainee at that moment and he was already close with other trainees such as jihoon, wonwoo and ex-trainee doyoon. jeonghan had difficulty making friends due to his shy nature, but then the enthusiastic, ever excited kim jihae comes along, dragging that poor american trainee with her. jeonghan had always thought how cute she sounded whenever she called jisoo by his english name back when she feared that she might offend him if she ever called him by his korean name.

it didn't take long enough for jihae to get close with soonyoung. still, she never forgot about her first two friends. her 'batchmates' as she'd call the trio as they entered pledis around the same time, they'd usually hangout during their breaktime, sneaking off to the convenience store four blocks away from the pledis, secretly buying riceballs and chocolate milk for her. there were times it was just jeonghan and jihae, jisoo had additional korean classes, much to the dismay of the other two.

at that point, jihae knew she had crush on jeonghan. apart from how pretty he is, jeonghan slowly showed his true self to s now that as the time passes, the closer they all get. he was cheeky, always teasing the other members and even considering them as friends than dongsaengs. he was always so determined to do his best despite how anxious he gets with their weekly evaluation, and he also showed how caring he was with his fellow members. despite her feelings, jihae had never thought of confessing to him. she has seen fellow trainees being caught having relationship resulting to them getting kicked out of the company, and the last thing she wanted was to find a company that was willing to take her in. it was probably for the best, since jeonghan also knew how he felt. he would have accepted her feelings if she had confessed.

despite hiding her feelings, jihae didn't want to leave jeonghan when he was suffering the most. the boy was getting stressed day by day, even to the point thinking of dropping out. fortunately, jisoo, seungcheol and seungkwan managed to convince him to stay, and despite jihae telling herself that she'll be happy for him whatever his decision will be, she couldn't help but to feel relieved. since then, she promised to help him in her own little way, and because jeonghan has admitted that dancing was not his forté, jihae promised to help him improve. so every night, after their usual daily practice, jihae and jeonghan would stay longer in the practice rooms.

this continued for two years. then one night, just days before seventeen started filming seventeen project, jeonghan confesses his feelings. they had literally just finished an intense dance routine, panting as they laid in the cold floor of the dance studio. jihae silently thanks her exhaustion for her lack of words, but she knew she had to say something eventually. she tried to pass it a joke, but as she looked back at jeonghan, she knew he was serious. her heart broke despite the confession because despite liking him back, she'd always choose her dreams first.

"people like us are not supposed to be thinking about these things." she told him.

"i know. i just wanted to let you know." he sighs.

thankfully, seventeen got busier after their debut which meant she didn't have to worry about him for a while depite the confession replaying at the back of her head all the time. but when you're close with the members and has a bestfriend as crazy as kwon soonyoung, jihae was bound to cross paths with the boys. not to mention pledis was not that big of a company so there really was no escape despite her constant excuses that often gets her away from hanging out with seventeen.

now, she finds herself stuck with jeonghan and despite her heartbeat getting faster when he's around, jihae knew how to not get attention with how awkward they were now so she acted normal and civilized with him when the cameras are rolling. still, members who knew how close they were can tell that something was off with them.
