I'm A Guardian, You're A Human

Guardian

[Three days later]

It was a Sunday, and MyungSoo was sleeping in.

I got up and decided to make breakfast.

I was almost done when the doorbell rang.

Who could it be?

I hurried out to open the door, and what I saw made me want to slam the door close.

There standing at the door were my parents, SungYeol and the head Guardian.

“Wha..what are you doing here?” I stuttered.

They pushed past me and barged into the apartment.

“Please, not here” I begged.

My plea fell on deaf ears as my dad barged into MyungSoo’s room and soon returned with a confused MyungSoo in his grasp.

“Oppa!”

“KyoWen ah, what’s going on? Are you okay?” he asked.

“I’m fine” I fibbed.

I didn’t want to have him panicking.

Dad then flung him onto the sofa.

I rushed forward to his side.

“Lee KyoWen, I believe you know why we are here today?” said the Head Guardian.

“Yes..”

“And, do you have anything to say for yourself?”

I turned to look at MyungSoo.

He was looking back at me, worry written all over his face.

I then turned back to the head of Guardian.

“Yes, I do no regret what I did”

SungYeol turned away from me, while both my parents gasp in shock.

The head Guardian on the other hand, was as calm as always.

“And you know the consequences, don’t you?”

I nodded.

“KyoWen ah, what’s going on? Who are they?” asked MyungSoo.

“It’s okay. It will be over soon” I assured him.

Deep inside, I knew that it would really be over.

But not in the way we want it to be.

“Very well, you have made your decision, and I shall respect that”

“Bring him in!” boomed the head Guardian.

SungGyu oppa was hauled in by two Guardian guards.

“SungGyu oppa!” I called out.

I never wanted any of this to happen.

“Let him go!” I shouted.

“You want me to let him go?” cooed the head Guardian sadistically.

“Please” I begged.

“He just wanted to see me happy… there’s no wrong in that…”

Tears were beginning to fall.

MyungSoo wrapped his arms around me, and I just buried my face against his chest.

I couldn’t take this anymore.

I pulled back from MyungSoo and turned my attention toward the head of Guardian.

“I relinquish my duties and my status, I hereby want to be released”

“KyoWen!” screamed SungYeol.

“Do you know what you are doing?” yelled my mum.

“Yes, and I have decided” I muttered quietly.

“KyoWen…”

My heart broke when I heard his voice.

I turned to MyungSoo, tears staining my cheeks.

“I’m sorry” I whispered.

SungYeol then marched up to us before he pulled MyungSoo off the sofa by the collar.

“What the hell have you done to my sister?!”

“You’re ruining her life!” he screamed.

I tried hard to pull them apart, but to no avail.

“Will somebody please tell me what is going on!” demanded MyungSoo.

He cast me a pleading look, and I just looked away.

I couldn’t tell him.

“She’s a Guardian! She’s not human!” cried out SungYeol.

I winced; I never wanted him to find out.

“A guardian?” asked MyungSoo, confused.

“Yes, we’re all guardians. Our duty is to watch over our assigned human. And KyoWen is your assigned guardian” explained the head Guardian.

I buried my face in my hands; I didn’t want to see his expression.

“Please… just release me, and do not harm them” I begged.

“KyoWen ah, stop asking to be released!” shrieked SungYeol.

He had a pained expression on his face.

I know he loves me, and I love him dearly too.

But I can’t let them harm SungGyu, and definitely not MyungSoo.

I looked at MyungSoo whom was sitting there dazed.

Trying to digest all that he has just been told.

“KyoWen, do you really want to be released?” asked the head Guardian.

“Yes, on the condition that nobody else gets hurt for my actions” I stared him straight in the eye.

“Very well. I’ll spare them, but you’ll have to be released”

I nodded in response.

“You have fifteen minutes to say your goodbye’s before the release will take effect” and with that said, the head Guardian left.

I turned to look at the people around me.

My parents were crying, SungYeol was devastated.

MyungSoo was staring at me, unable to accept the fact.

SungGyu oppa, reached out for my hand.

“I’m sorry SungGyu oppa… thank you, for granting me a few days more with MyungSoo” I smiled at SungGyu as tears slid down his cheeks.

“You’re very brave…if only I had the bravery you have”

He reached over and hugged me and we both silently cried.

As we pulled apart, I told SungGyu to look after my parents and SungYeol for me.

“Oppa…” I called out to SungYeol.

He looked up at me, tears staining his cheeks.

I remember the last time SungYeol cried was back when he was six, and our pet phoenix died.

Seeing him crying again today, only did I realize how vulnerable he is.

I reached out to him, and he came forward.

“I’m going to miss you” he said, in between sobs.

“I’ll miss you too…”

He then ruffled my hair for the very last time.

I smiled at him, “Thank you”

It was finally time to say goodbye to MyungSoo.

I slowly walked over to him, not wanting to startle him.

“Oppa…” I called out softly.

He looked up at me, and I reached out to hold his hand.

He didn’t pull back, instead he gripped on tight to it.

“I’m sorry for lying to you” I started.

“I never intended to fall for you. I was just going to carry out my duties..”

“And..” my eyes were filling up with tears again.

“Shhhh…” hushed MyungSoo.

“It’s okay.. We could start over”

I felt a lump form in my throat as he mentioned start over.

“We…can’t…”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m being released…. I’ve given up my life..”

“Wh..what?” he stuttered.

“That can’t be it. That’s not true”

I turned to look at the rest of the people in the room, they then understood and left.

Leaving just the two of us.

I wrapped MyungSoo into my embrace as he started to cry.

“It’s going to be alright” I comforted him.

“How is it going to be alright when you’re leaving me”

“You won’t remember me after I’m gone”

He looked up at me, “No!”

“It’s for the best. You’ll forget everything starting from the day we met until today”

“But I don’t want to forget!”

I hushed him.

“Could we not talk about this? I don’t want to spend the last few minutes this way..”

My eyelids started feeling heavier.

I could feel my strength beginning to drain out of me.

I then fell limp on the floor.

“KyoWen!”

“KyoWen ah, don’t sleep, please!”

MyungSoo crouched over me, I smiled.

He gently cradled me into his embrace as I feel life slowly slip out of me.

“Myung..MyungSoo oppa…” I stuttered.

“Yes?” he managed, with tears rolling down his cheek.

“I..I…I’m sorry” I whispered.

“Don’t be, you didn’t do anything wrong”

“I shouldn’t have fallen for you.. if I hadn’t, you wouldn’t have to go through this”

He hushed me and just pulled me closer to him.

It felt like paradise being there with him.

If I had to go, at least I would be with the one I love.

“I don’t regret the past three months we have spent together. It’s three of my happiest months spent” he replied, silently my hair.

A small smile forms on my face as I reach out to touch his face.

“ I love you..” I whispered.

“I know, I love you too” he replied, more tears rolling down his cheek.

“You have to live your life to the fullest, okay?” I told him, as I slowly felt weaker.

MyungSoo didn’t reply, he just held me close to him.

“Oppa… promise me…” I urged.

“I won’t” came his reply.

“Please” I begged.

“No”

“Oppa… I’m a Guardian, and you’re a human. We weren’t mean to be”

“Don’t say that!” he screamed.

“Promise me….” I managed with my very last breath.

I then went completely limp in his arms.

Tears poured out continuously from MyungSoo’s eyes, unable to accept his lost.

“I…I promise you…” he silently muttered under his breath.

It was then that he felt a warm breeze engulfed around him.

And a familiar scent breeze by before he was left completely alone in the building.

[A Year Later]

“MyungSoo oppa” a girl with long wavy hair called out.

MyungSoo, turned and smiled at her.

“HyeMin ah” he called out tenderly.

“Where are we going today?” she asked, as she interlocked their fingers together.

“I don’t know. Where do you want to go?” he replied.

“Hmmm… the mall?”

“Okay”

As the couple were heading towards their parked car, a girl that looked really familiar was heading their way.

As she walked by, MyungSoo couldn’t help but stare.

A familiar scent was in the air.

“KyoWen ah, wait up!”

A boy about MyungSoo’s age was running after the girl.

“Yah, Nam WooHyun, aren’t you slow for a guy” joked the girl.

“Well, you’re just fast” he replied, as he place a peck on her cheek.

Not knowing why, MyungSoo felt a tinge of jealousy in his heart.

“Oppa, what’s wrong? Do you know them?” asked HyeMin.

“Oh, no… let’s go”

And that was the last time the two ever met.
