ficlet - two captains (i)

shut out

"So what happened in the bullpen today?" Dongwoo heard Yonghwa ask from the other side of the fence. The slightly older man giving Dongwoo a grin as soon as he had given him a glance, acknowledging his presence, before he had went to focus on hitting the ball before him again.

The events of that afternoon had led him to the batting cages so that he could practice his batting. Dongwoo needing to cool off and clear his head bit, slightly angry about what had happened that day. Even though Sunggyu had every right to say what he did, because as harsh as Sunggyu had seemed, he had been right. Even if it had hurt Dongwoo to see Myungsoo's face transform from one that was asking for praise turn into one that was horrified and almost fearful by what he had just done. And as much as it was the fault of those two idiot first years, Myungsoo had let himself get distracted when he shouldn't have.

Finishing up the last pitch, solidly hitting a ball that had probably hit a max speed of 150km, a testament to how much Dongwoo had improved and how much worth he was to potential teams, Dongwoo finally put his bat down to come out of the cage to talk to Yonghwa. Voice even and eyes serious as he took off his gloves while he leaned against the fence, "Sunggyu challenged one of our newest recruits and it didn't go as well as he had hoped..."

"Mmm, Coach Mithra did tell me something like that, but he didn't seem too worried either. But I take it that Sunggyu didn't take things very well?"

Giving a small huff of a laugh, Dongwoo turned to him, "No and Sunggyu had every right to, it's barely been a couple of months since Heechul. And as much potential Myungsoo has, it's untapped and it's going to take some work to get him up to par, especially for games."

Nodding his head to what Dongwoo had just said, taking in the tension that was placed across the other's shoulders, knowing that the other was just showing a brave face. The face that everyone on the team usually showed, even when they didn't feel brave, Yonghwa didn't pull attention to it. Not because he didn't care, but because he knew that Dongwoo didn't want him to see the emotions he couldn't hide. Even if Dongwoo was one of the members on their team that showed their emotions like a brand at times.

Dongwoo was upset and while Yonghwa was sure that he wasn't upset with Sunggyu, he was obviously upset at the fact that Myungsoo had lost a chance to prove himself. Because as much as Myungsoo could go up the ranks and prove himself to others, it would take a lot more to prove himself to Sunggyu. Especially after failing his first test with the other man since Sunggyu wasn't the type of person that gave second chances that often.

"I see, that might be a problem if he can't do that, but what do you think?"

Sighing, Dongwoo could only give it a few thoughts, thinking back to that breaking ball and the reasonably strong stance the other had sported. He couldn't find much fault there, especially since Myungsoo had the fundamentals down and with hard work and confidence, Dongwoo felt like Myungsoo could improve if he had wanted to. But did he want to?

He didn't know, but if he did, then it was definitely possible.

"If he wants to win, if he wants to become the best, then he'll do it. But if he doesn't, then I don't think he will." Dongwoo eventually admitted before going on to ask, "What do you think? Have you met him yet?"

Shaking his head no, but knowing that it wasn't completely true. Especially since he had seen a thin boy, someone that he had assumed to be Myungsoo a couple of minutes prior to his meeting with Dongwoo, practicing his pitching, completely drenched in sweat, he could tell that the other had drive. The other wanting to improve so much, to show others that he could play, that Yonghwa couldn't help but feel confident about him. Even if there was no definite reason for why he had felt that way.

Something had been there and people would have to be blind not to see it.

"I haven't talked to him, but I think he'll be okay, just have to give him a few days to acclimate... I have a good feeling about him, even if he needs some work. And I'm sure Sunggyu will come around as well, because if the kid has an inkling of talent like Coach thinks, he'll definitely change his tune."

Feeling that Yonghwa was right, his heart feeling a bit lighter than it had earlier, Dongwoo could only reply with a small smile of his own,"I guess you're right and we'll just have to see how he takes to training. Today was just a bad day and I'm sure he'll bring his A-game tomorrow."

Giving the other a small grin, Yonghwa could only pat him on the shoulder, "That's the spirit, no need to be down about such things, alright? We still have a few months left before we have to really do anything, so why be so glum? Where's the Dongwoo that I usually see bouncing off the walls with energy?"

Chuckling at the sentiment, even if most of it was Yonghwa's way of trying to cheer him up, Dongwoo couldn't help but change the subject, "Still here, so don't worry... But do you want to see what I've been working on?"

While Yonghwa could only agree in return, "Of course, just let me go grab my stuff."

Only for Dongwoo to call out as he started to walk away, Dongwoo showing his real colors as a co-captain, "Bring Myungsoo as well, I'm sure you saw him earlier."

Grinning, Yonghwa could only do as he was told.
