ficlet - physicals (i/ii)

shut out

Myungsoo could only look around nervously as he waited for one of the players in front of him to get their physical. Unused to the fancy office that was surrounding him as doctors back home were usually much smaller, more compact, and filled with cheap knick-knacks that an office like this would never have. So he was more than a little bit afraid to get the place dirty or heaven forbid break something since the office was all soft creams and neutrals, but looked and felt terribly expensive. So he couldn’t help but be a little bit on edge as he waited, hoping the physician wasn’t as uptight as his office seemed to be.

Twiddling with his thumbs, he almost jumped out of his seat when the boy next to him leaned over to whisper something in his ear, “Dude, that chair isn’t going to swallow you whole, you know?”

Hand making it’s way behind his neck so that he could rub the back of it, he quietly turned his head with a sheepish smile on his face, “I - uh, I know. Just nervous.”

Seeing the other player - no, Lee Sungjong, as he was introduced earlier by Coach Mithra, give a small laugh and smile of his own, the other easily replied, “Ah, I see. Wouldn’t worry too much though, I heard Miss Kang is super nice and professional about things, so no need to be nervous.”

Giving a nervous laugh, Myungsoo could only nod, only for Sungjong to smirk, “But don’t get on her bad side, then she’s evil.”

Eyes widening and stomach almost dropping to his knees at the other’s words, Myungsoo couldn’t help but blanch in surprise, “What?! But you just said she was nice… And now she has a bad side? How do I not get on her bad side? I don’t want her to dislike me…”

Smiling at Myungsoo’s reactions, at how cute he was, Sungjong couldn’t help but chuckle. The slightly taller boy being more than a little glad that he had someone like this on the team, even if he seemed a little too naive and gullible. Sungjong was definitely going to have some fun with him.

“As long as you listen to her and don’t do anything stupid, then you’ll be fine… At least that’s what Sungyeol-hyung tells me.”

Almost sighing in relief, especially since Myungsoo was quite the good listener, the tension in Myungsoo’s shoulders dissolved a little bit. Not realizing that Sungjong was just playing with him, even if his words were true. Because according to Sungyeol, Miss Kang could be evil, but she was only evil for a good cause. She didn’t want people to get hurt or do anything stupid when it came to playing, recovering, and anything unhealthy related to nutrition, whether it was losing or gaining weight. And looking at Myungsoo who was all skin and bones, even thinner than himself, despite being all wiry-muscle, he knew that Miss Kang was going to set him up on something.

It was kind of impossible not to, because baseball needed strong, healthy players, and Myungsoo looked as if a strong gust of wind could blow him over… Hopefully it was just because he recently had a growth spurt, rather than something much worse.

”Seriously, just make sure you listen to what she has to say, especially when it comes to nutrition or injuries, then you’ll be fine. So no worries, alright?”

Nodding, Myungsoo could only give him a small smile in response. Only to be called by one of the nurses a second later, Sungjong silently waving him off with a soft “Good luck” in response.

Myungsoo could only return the wave as he finally made his way to a separate room to have his height and weight taken. The nurse almost tutting when she saw the numbers, knowing that Miss Kang was definitely going to notice that and force the player on a diet that would help him gain weight, even during her husband’s intense training regime. But seeing the other boy frown, especially at the number 57 on the scale, she couldn’t help but call him away and usher him into the next room, forcing him into the patient’s chair with a stern, “Now wait here, Miss Kang will be by in a moment, alright?”

Politely giving a “Yes, ma’am,” before seeing the nurse nod and shut the door, Myungsoo was stuck waiting, nerves lighting up with worry again.

Hopefully Sungjong was right and that the woman was nice enough, because if she wasn’t… Well, Myungsoo didn’t know what he would do.

So quietly fiddling with his thumbs, he could only sit and think about everything that had happened that day as he waited.
