On His Knee

On His Knee
(One Shot)

You x Jimin

“Will you marry me?” Jimin asked balancing on one of his knees the minute you were going to let all of your bottled up frustration be released and lash out at him after finally seeing him again for the first time in four months. “Will you marry me?” he asked again leaving you speechless, frozen in place. The angry tears that had been building up inside your eyes finally let loose and take its path as gravity pulls it down your face. The proposal is the most romantic thing he’s done after telling you to wait for him time after time. With a smile on his face, he slowly opens the box, slow enough to get your heart going with curiosity. From the ever so perfect lighting, the diamond sparks and flashes at your eyes here and there as his hands shake nervously awaiting your answer.

“Baby, remember when you said you’d eventually want to settle down and start a family?” he smiles warmly with satisfaction. “Yes,” you wiped your tears off your face and smile. “I remember.” You and Jimin decided to go watch a movie on your eighth date. It was about a man who stayed single the rest of his life after losing his first one and only love. He could not find that same genuine connection he had with her. He later met a girl with the same personality and same aura as his first love which made him want to protect and keep her safe. He gives her all his fatherly love only to find out she was actually her daughter. After the movie was over, the date wasn’t. You two headed to a coffee shop and reflected on the movie which lead you two to express to each other your views on marriage. “When I find the right man, I’d love to settle down and get married one day. I want him to focus on loving me and I want to focus on being a great wife to him,” you told him. “Me too. When I get married I want it to be special and with the person I know that I will spend the rest of my life with. That will be you won’t it?” he asked. “Of course,” you replied with no hesitation. That was the first time you and Jimin had ever talked about marriage to each other.

Your sister and brother in law were going on a business trip for the weekend so they left you with your bratty but beautiful 7 month old niece. You parents were at a funeral all day 5 hours away so home alone were just you and your niece. Since you were home alone you decide to call Jimin over. Helping you babysit your niece was just an excuse. “She’s so cute I keep wanting to kiss her bigcheeks,” he mumbled with his lips attached to her cheeks. You laughed at him seeing his sweetness. You saw the fatherly side of him that night. He wasn’t disgusted with changing her diaper, he didn’t make her cry at all, he mixed her bottle and fed her. His fatherlyside was just so warm and cozy. You thought to yourself he would be a great dad, maybe even be the great father of your kids in the future. Your niece finally fell asleep right around her bedtime. It wasn’t easy work taking care of a baby. After she went to sleep, you and Jimin flop on the couch exhausted. Jimin was the first to ask, “how many kids do you want to have?” “I want just a daughter and son,” you replied to him. “But I want 4 kids,” he volumed up. “But I only want two children,” you argued. “But I want four kids. The perfect balance. Two girls and two boys!” he argued back. “Can we settle on three then?" "Sure." "One boy, one girl and a surprise?” he tried to compromise. You laughed and compromised along,”sure, three kids is okay then.” How would your kids look like? Will he look more like him or more like you? If they had his eye smile, it would be kind of cute. Your son would probably have his beautiful, thick eyebrows too. They’re so handsome. You can't wait to see those good looking son or sons that will take after him.

Your hands raise to feel the ring that acts as a charm on your necklace. You feel and twirl it between your fingers. You yank the necklace right off your neck and let it hang from your hand while the ring lies inside your palm. It was a cold fall when you and he were sitting on a park bench just having a beautiful date celebrating your 200 days anniversary. You could hear the crunching of fallen leaves behind you as kids were chasing each other around playing tag. “It’s cold isn’t it?” he asked. “It is,” you replied with shivering lips.  He grabbed your right hand that had no place to hide from the cold wind with his warm hand and put it in the pocket of his sweater still  grasping onto your hand. “Better?” he asked. “Yes,” you replied. He squeezed your hands for fun to get your attention. “It hurts,” you  joked. He loosened the grip and just smiled at you. Your hands wiggle around in there since you were feeling something poke the back of your hands. No matter how hard you try to adjust your hands to feel comfortable, the thing just kept poking you. You pulled out  your hands and so does he. “What’s in your pocket?” you asked. “It keeps poking me and it hurts.” “I don’t know. You should check,” he  replied seriously. Your put your hands in there wandering around to feel it and pull it out. “What’s this?” you ask him. “It’s a promise ring,” he excitedly answered. “A promise ring?” You couldn’t be any happier. “You’re making me a promise?” The smile on your face could not be any wider. “I am,” his smile just as wide as yours. The soft hearted person you are, you try to hold your tears back because  it was a happy occasion. You hug him as tight as you could and a tear slipped down your face while your smile stretches from one ear to  another. For a second, you forgot it was cold and freezing. All you could feel was his chest against yours and his chin on your shoulders keeping you warmer than the sun ever could.

From outside the room you and Jimin were in, you could hear chanting, “KISS! KISS! KISS!!” echoing down the hallway. The noisiness fills the air before you could even give him an answer. You suddenly remember your first kiss with Jimin. It was the twelfth date in. He took you to a soccer field to play soccer because he was trying to get ready for a competition. He also wanted to teach you how to play because you’ve never tried it before. “Sit,” he demanded for you to sit at the corner of a bleacher. He got down to his knees and pulled out from his backpack and surprised you a pair of puma cleats and socks. He took it freshly out of the box and placed it on the floor. He took off your shoes and put on the socks and new cleats. He tied the shoelaces for you as well. “Nice and tight,” he said pulling the laces hard. “It fits you perfectly,” he said satisfyingly. It felt weird when you stood up for the first time in those shoes. It’s nothing like wearing heels. You sat on the ground across from him and stretched along. You laid out your legs symmetrical to his creating a diamond shape. After stretching, he makes you run 3 laps with him to make you get use to the shoes. You still weren’t all that comfortable yet but you were good enough to jog in it. He taught you how to kick the ball from side to side with the inside part of your feet. From nowhere, he decided to steal the ball from you. Unfortunately, your legs tangle with his causing him to lose balance and fall towards you. You fell with your back on the ground and he fell right on top of you. That was the first time his face was that close to you. You stare in his eyes with a surprised look as his stares right back at you. His head slowly fall towards yours after having had a hold of it already. You see his head coming so your quick human nature reaction was to close your eyes to keep them safe. Not missing out on the chance, he pecks your lips quickly and got up. You open your eyes to wonder what just happened. You could see him shyly smiling sitting up next to you looking far into the distance. You got right up and swung around to the front of his face and kiss him right back. You pull away embarrassingly while smiling and so did he.

“I can’t imagine what my life would be like without you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you baby. I’m ready to settle down and start a life with you. I love you. Will you accept my proposal?” Jimin, still on his knees, proposes. “I want to have our wedding picture at the entrance so that when you enter the house, you can see it right away. So that the visitors know it’s our house,” you excitedly state your plans to Jimin. “That sounds good. And we can have matching slippers too,” he joins in. “Can we have a red love seat couch and a glass coffee table. I want the house to be very contemporary like,” you tell him. “I like it!” he replies. “Wouldn’t it be nice if we have a puppy too?” he continued. “Aww. A puppy? What should we name it?” “If it’s white and a girl, how about we call it Snow? Like Snow White,” he suggested. “I love it! And if it’s chubby or round, we can call it Egg because it’ll look like it's always rolling,” you said to Jimin while touring around the furniture and home store as a date. You reach the beds and he jumps to lay on there first. “Join me,” he called. You take off your purse and put it on your stomach as you lay next to him gently. His hands reach out to pull it towards the middle of the bed and set his hands on top of yours and while just lying on there. You start to notice your heart beat a bit faster. “How about this one?” he asked. “No. It sinks in too much,” you replied. After getting up, you two sleep on about another 4 beds. Each time you lie  down next to him, your heart starts beating faster and faster. The thought of sleeping next to him everyday excites but also scares you. Will you really get to lie next to him like this for the rest of your life like you are now?

“Are you willing to spend the rest of your life with me?” Jimin questions you. You can’t help but drown in your own tears trying to gasp for air. He watches as you ball your eyes out. He knows the pain of delimma you’re going through. He understands this isn’t the easiest decision considering what’s been happening lately. He just kneels praying for the answer he wants to hear but knows the chances are slim. You try to calm yourself down but it’s not easy. Beautiful, happy memories flies by in your head like they were all just created yesterday. Your chest tightens feeling like your lungs are being squeezed. Your eyes spills tears one after another without even having to blink. You feel so bad for feeling this way.

“When are you going to text me back?” you text Jimin. “Can you call me?” you text him again 2 days later. “Honey, can I bring you lunch tomorrow?” you text again. “I’m busy. I’ll call you when I have time,” he finally replies. This is what have been going on for the last 3 months now. Short answers and false hopes. You stare at your phone waiting for him to call every single night until you fall asleep. The distance gradually grows and your paths are splitting further and further apart. You see him updating his statuses on social network yet he doesn’t have the time to even call you which saddens your heart. And when he does it’s only for about 5 minutes long, sometimes not even 2 minutes. His texts only arrive once or twice a week and it’s always “I’ll call you later” or “I’ll call when I have time”.

Things seemed to have changed so much over such a short period of time. You long for his tired voice during late night phone calls and hugs during frustrating times. You wish he’d still be there for you like he use to but his career is taking over his time. Sometimes you feel like a responsibility or a burden to him rather than his lover. The space between you and Jimin grew so much it's far too hard to see him in the distance anymore. After so many restless nights, you’ve finally come to a conclusion. You can feel deeply in your heart that you are no longer needed in his life. Stranger seems to be a word soon to be the definition of your relationship as the length between you and him have been stretching for quite some time. He loves you. You know that all too well. You love him too. That is why you have to let him go. The thing that would hurt most is knowing that you are the one holding him back from becoming the person he has always wanted to be. Maybe it’s time to release yourself from his loving bond. If it’s meant to be, you will meet again at some better time and maybe you can fall in love all over again just like how it was the first time around.

“Baby,” he cried. You can’t even look at his eyes at all staring to the right then to the left of him. You finally find the strength to look into his eyes. His eyes, red and puffy, were quietly pleaing you. Strips of ocean-like tears drawn dismally on his face. You look up to the ceiling again to help get a grip of your emotions. That image of his crying face engraves in your head even though you’re trying to look away and distract your thoughts. He calls you one more time, “baby.” Tears roll down the side of your cheeks and touch the lobe of your ears. You look down at him once more.

“Sorry.” That was all you could say. You know it’s only a promise only made to be shattered one day. You wipe your tears away with your sleeves and lean towards him. You take his hand, open it and place the necklace with your promise ring onto the center of his palm. The palm you’ve touched many times; the palm that you thank for keeping your palm warm when it was cold out. “This is for the best,” you tell yourself sure that it was the right decision. With closed eyes, you kiss his forehead for what felt like the longest yet shortest 3 seconds of your life. Without realizing, one last tear drops from your face and fall onto his skin. You unlock your lips from his forehead to turn towards the door. Before you open that door, you clutch onto your chest bursting out in a silent cry so he wouldn’t hear. Was it guilt or was it sorrow? Your hold the door knob tight and it turn to open. While walking away in what seemed to be the longest endless hallway, a loud noise was made echoing to reach you. The door shuts and you tell yourself, "don't look back. Don't look back."
