The Royal PretenseSehun instantly felt his mouth dry up.
"What did you say?" he croaked slowly. His mother sighed.
"We want to talk about your coming-of-age."
"So what about it?" Sehun crossed his arms, feigning indifference, but deep down, his stomach churned, and his palms became sweaty. His heart rate went up in anticipation of the words that would soon come out of his parents' mouths.
His father spoke. "As you know, according to the traditions, you will need to marry in the next year. You will soon be of age, so your mother and I thought that it would be a good idea to discuss it."
"Do you have any opinions about your impending marriage?" his mother asked. Sehun shrugged, unsure what to think or say. He knew this was coming for a while now, but he hadn't prepared himself for this conversation. More than anything, he was not able to come up with an adequate response or solution to the predicament that he was currently facing.
The Queen, seeing no response from her son, continued, "We want you to be happy. We truly do. That's why we are asking you what you want. Typically, your father and I are supposed to arrange your marriage, but we want to consider your thoughts."
What a lie. Sehun thought to himself. What a fricken lie. His thoughts drifted to Hana. Their relationship was still so ambiguous, and Sehun, himself, was not even sure of what he wanted. He definitely liked her more than a friend and under normal circumstances, would consider dating her. But marriage was a totally different story. Maybe. It was too early to decide.
Bringing himself back to reality, Sehun replied, "I'm not sure yet, but I'll think about it. I hope that is okay with you, father, mother." The room fell silent for a moment, and Sehun's parents slowly nodded and muttered their agreement.
"When I came of age, I remember my dad-- your grandfather, that is-- chose three different girls for me to choose from to get married to." The King's eyes wandered off as he reminisced the past. "Luckily for me, I fell in with your mother, who happened to be one of the three women, and married her."
