Agent & Dr. C - Season 2

“That’s it, I’m calling the police,” said Luna, grabbing her phone which was on the coffee table, in Sooyoung’s office.

“For the fifth time, you don’t need to call the police. I am the police,” grumbled Kyuhyun, pinching the arc of his nose, clearly exasperated.

“Well then, do something,” exclaimed Luna. “I want to fill in a missing person report,” she said, crossing her arms and looking at him defiantly.

“You can’t file in a missing person report. You have to wait twenty-four hours before you can do that,” calmly explained Kyuhyun, sitting back in his couch and closing his eyes.

“Well then, I’ll call Changmin oppa,” skulked Luna, unlocking her phone. “He probably has more power than you do, anyways.” Kyuhyun’s eyes opened instantly at the mention of Changmin’s name.

“Why would you do that?” he asked, anger written all over his face.

“Because you at being the police,” accused Luna, scrolling down her contact list. Kyuhyun looked at the ceiling in frustration and sighed loudly, if Luna’s behaviour was like having a child, fatherhood wasn’t meant for him.

“It’s only been half an hour,” reasoned Kyuhyun. “I’m sure she’s stuck in traffic or something.”

“She’s never late,” protested Luna.

“There’s a first time for everything,” replied Kyuhyun, sitting back in his couch.

“I’m sure it’s all your fault,” accused Luna. Kyuhyun looked at Luna sternly and didn’t even bother to answer. It would take too much energy. He shrugged and let her ramble about all the worst-case scenarios that could have happened to Sooyoung. Kyuhyun closed his eyes, looking for inner silence. The detective was exhausted. A couple of weeks had passed since he first heard Sooyoung crying his name in his dream, yet he couldn’t help but wonder about its meaning. The screams had come backed to haunt his dreams several times afterwards, but he still couldn’t understand what was happening and why she was calling for him. A sudden chill went down his spine and Kyuhyun sat up, his spine forming a perfect straight line. The thought that maybe it was a premonitory dream sent his body on high alert. What if Sooyoung was calling for him at that exact same moment and for once he couldn’t hear her? What if she was in danger and he couldn’t do anything to save her? Death did follow him. The sound of an opening door made him jump on his seat and he quickly turned around. Sooyoung barged into her office with a cup of coffee in one hand, documents in the other, and her purse snugged in the crock of her elbow.

“I am sorry I am late,” she puffed out, making it obvious she had made a run from the parking lot to her office. “I had a meeting,” she announced, placing her cup of coffee, the documents, and her purse on the desk.

“We had a meeting?” exclaimed Luna, franticly turning the pages of her agenda, looking for a mention of the meeting.

“I had a meeting,” corrected Sooyoung, grabbing the documents. Kyuhyun’s trained eyes looked at Sooyoung in wonder, as her long fingers delicately opened the lower right drawer of her desk and tapped what seemed like a password for a safe. His eyes focused on the documents she carefully placed in the safety box.

“What’s that?” he bluntly asked, when she had closed the drawer.

“Nothing,” shrugged Sooyoung, sitting down at her office desk, slowly sipping her dark coffee, as she challenged Kyuhyun’s stare. “Why are you here?”

“A dead body was found at a gym in Gangnam,” explained Kyuhyun, giving up on the staring contest.

“Why do bodies always appear first thing in the morning?” exclaimed Sooyoung, rolling her eyes.

“It was a 24 hour gym,” explained Kyuhyun, surprised at the sudden change in attitude.

“Let me guess, there are no witnesses,” smirked Sooyoung, knowing all too well the drill.

“None whatsoever,” replied Kyuhyun, enjoying the sudden spark in Sooyoung’s eyes.

“Well then, let’s get this murder solved, so we can go home early tonight,” said Sooyoung, clapping her hands, and getting up from her chair. To say that Kyuhyun was in shock was an understatement. Luna groaned something under her breath in disapproval and glowered at Kyuhyun. She quickly gathered her belongings and followed her teacher who was already walking towards the elevators.

If the morning events had been usual, the car ride had a tint of normality. The usual silence was present, at the exception of Sooyoung lazily playing on her phone. Kyuhyun concerned looked into his rear-view mirror and met Luna’s gaze. She shrugged and mouthed something that led him to believe she was blaming it on him.

“A gym employee found a dead body this morning, when he setting up the room for his morning class. Officers on site have secured the perimeter and are waiting for you to look at the body, before sending it to the lab.”

“Was my body touched?” asked Sooyoung, briefly taking her eyes away from her phone.

“I was assured you’d be the first one to touch it,” reassured Kyuhyun, making a sharp left turn.

“Good,” said Sooyoung, returning her attention to her game. Kyuhyun glanced at her quickly and shook his head in wonder. He had wished for a normal co-worker for as long as he could remember and now that he had one, he was hating every single moment of it. For the rest of the ride, Sooyoung hardly took her eyes away from her phone’s screen. Luna even had to give her a slight nudge on her elbow when they arrived at the crime scene. Sooyoung mumbled an apology and instructed her student to suit up. Kyuhyun patiently waited for the duo to get ready and then lead them under the yellow police tape and into the fitness center. Sooyoung couldn’t help but notice that the sounds of her forensic team hard at work had replaced the usual up beat music found in every gym. She then followed Kyuhyun to the second floor. The detective calmly lead them into a large room, where Sooyoung could only assume was a room used for group classes. Her expert eyes quickly scanned the room, looking for any signs of the body. She noticed that a large glass window separated the room from the main hallway. Therefor, the classroom had a lot of open spaces, thus making it hard to commit a murder with any kind of privacy.

“Follow me,” ordered Kyuhyun, leading them to the far right corner of the room. Sooyoung nodded and looked at their reflection in the mirrored wall that ran parallel to the glass window, what an odd trio she thought.

“This is as far as I can go,” declared Kyuhyun, looking at a set of doors.

“You mean…” replied Luna, confused. Kyuhyun slightly raised his eyebrows defiantly and crossed his arms. Not wanting to lose another moment, Sooyoung placed her gloved hand on the door’s handle and slowly turned it. A strong smell of iron, indicating blood, filled the vicinity once Sooyoung had fully opened the door revealing a state of the art storage room. Kyuhyun scrunched his nose in disgust and covered his nose and mouth with his notepad, hoping it would keep the smell away. Sooyoung looked closely at the body, oblivious to Kyuhyun gagging in the background.

“Blunt trauma to the head,” she declared, getting closer to the body. “It looks like our victim was hit in the back of the head, which would probably be cause of death. Autopsy will be able to reveal if it was the force of the impact that killed him or blood lose.”

“So it’s a he?” inquired Kyuhyun, writing down the information on the notepad.

“Yes,” confirmed Sooyoung, looking at the equipment around the body. “The weapon the killed him could have very well been one of these weights.”

“You want them brought to the lab, I am guessing?” sighed Kyuhyun.

“You know me all too well,” teased Sooyoung, looking over at her student. “Dr. Park, is everything okay?”

“I found this in his hand,” she said, handing her over a scrunched up piece of paper. Sooyoung took it and looked at it in wonder.

“Everything happens for a reason, Mr. Kwon,” she read out loud.

“Guess we’ve identified a third of the victim’s name,” grumbled Kyuhyun, handing over a bag of evidence to Sooyoung, who delicately placed the blood stained paper in it.

“I think I might know who this is,” she mumbled, looking over at the victim’s face. “Kwon Jinwon.”

“Who?” asked Kyuhyun, wondering if Sooyoung hadn’t started memorizing the identities of each Korean citizen.

“Kwon Jinwon, I read an article about him this morning, in the paper. He bought some land in Myeongdong to develop some high-end condominiums, but there was a lot of opposition coming from social justice groups, but most importantly other investors. They are claiming it wasn’t a fair sell and that he bought off the seller even before the land was on the market. From what I understand, whoever builds there will make a fortune. The lot is well placed, the neighbourhood is said to be the next Gangnam. Everyone wants in.”

“Why kill them, though?” questioned Kyuhyun.

“I don’t know! You are the detective figure it out,” said Sooyoung, getting up and taking her gloves off. “Dr. Park please ask the technicians to bring all the evidence to the lab and can you please bag the body?”

“Where are you going?” asked Kyuhyun, when he saw Sooyoung walking away from the crime scene.

“Downstairs, I need to renew my gym membership,” she said, walking away and leaving her two co-workers behind.

“She’s never walked away like that from a crime scene,” mumbled Luna, dumbfounded. “It’s all your fault,” she accused, sending a death stare to Kyuhyun. “Be careful, or you might end up like this guy.”

“Is that a death threat Dr. Park? Because, I could arrest you for that,” warned Kyuhyun. Luna stuck her tongue out in frustration and returned her attention to the dead body.

“Are the lab techs looking at the weights?” calmly asked Sooyoung, measuring the size of the fracture, on the skull of the victim.

“Yes,” answered Luna. “They said they would notify us as soon as they found traces of blood. What’s the size of it?”

“You might want to tell them to look at the kettlebells too,” murmured Sooyoung.

“Why?” asked the apprentice, looking up from her notes.

“Well for starters, the fracture is fairly close to a perfect circle, whereas the weights at the gym have a hexagonal shape, meaning?”

“Meaning the fracture would also have an hexagonal shape,” concluded Luna, writing down the findings.

“Judging by the size of the fracture, which is 721mm, the kettlebell must have been at least 20 pounds. Now, if you add the strength of our killer and the force of gravity, since it looks like the assailant was taller than our victim. We are talking about a force strong enough to kill instantly.”

“So he didn’t bleed to death?” inquired Luna.

“No, he died on impact,” confirmed Sooyoung. She looked at her intern write down quickly what she had just said and took the clipboard away from her to sign cause of death.

“Please write down the report as soon as possible,” she said taking off her gloves and leaving the room and her intern behind for a second time that day.

“Where are you going?” asked Luna, afraid it was going to become a habit of Sooyoung to leave her behind without a word.

“Your father will want an update,” grumbled Sooyoung.

“My father?”

“Agent Cho,” replied Sooyoung, closing the door of the examination room behind her.

Back in her normal work clothes, Sooyoung quickly made her way to the conference room, where Kyuhyun had promised he would be. It was only at that moment that Sooyoung realized she had never been invited into his office. Sooyoung gave a quick knock on the door and didn’t wait for an answer before opening it. It was the same meeting room they had used for their case of the Cheonggyecheon Stream. She found Kyuhyun and Agent Lee already sitting at the conference table. She lightly bowed and sat in a chair facing the pair.

“Cause of death is a kettlebell,” she announced, after straightening her skirt, which had ruffled when she sat down. “The assailant came from behind and hit him on the back of the head. Whoever did it was slightly taller than Kwon. The technicians are looking for traces of blood on a kettlebell, once they find some they’ll do a DNA analysis. Hopefully it will be a match and I’ll have the weapon.”

“Good, Sunny has been looking at the security tapes and I did an interrogations just after lunch.”

“And?” inquired Sooyoung, slowly realizing the investigation wouldn’t be over as quickly as she hoped.

“I talked to the Mr. Kwon’s aerobic instructor, who was also the one who found the body this morning. He said Kwon was eager for him to leave the room, after their class ended, and assured him he could finish cleaning up. The instructor admitted he wasn’t against the idea, because he had a date, right after the class, and didn’t want to be late.”

“Security footage confirms his story,” continued Sunny. “We can see him meeting a woman in the lobby of the gym and afterwards we can see them leaving together.”

“At what time?” asked Sooyoung, piecing together the events of the night.

“Just after 11PM,” replied Sunny, looking at her transcripts.

“A bit late for a date,” countered Sooyoung.

“Not if you are going clubbing,” challenged Kyuhyun.

“I guess so,” mumbled Sooyoung. “Anyways, it couldn’t have been the instructor. Our killer is taller than Kwon and I estimate that time of death was at around midnight.”

“That means he stayed in the classroom for at least an hour after his teacher left,” commented Sunny. “Wasn’t there a class after them?”

“The gym’s schedule indicates that the aerobics class from 10PM to 11PM was the last class scheduled there,” replied Kyuhyun looking at the papers in front of him.

“So he was probably going to meet someone there, after his class. That’s why he was so eager for his instructor to leave,” continued Sunny.

“Sunny, can you look if the security cameras caught someone going in after the class?” asked Kyuhyun.

“On it,” replied Sunny, grabbing an electronic tablet, which was connected to the room’s audio-visual equipment.

“Wouldn’t the doors lock automatically after the class ended?” reasoned Sooyoung, looking at the images being projected on the white screen.

“Probably,” replied Kyuhyun, still looking at the papers in front of him. “But, he could’ve opened the door from the inside.”

“I found something,” interrupted Sunny, blowing up a video on the screen. “Here, at 11:12PM, you can see him opening the door for a woman.”

“Booty call?” chuckled Kyuhyun, scribbling something down on a piece of paper.

“It looks like it,” mumbled Sooyoung. Fortunately the glass window permitted them to have a fairly decent image of the classroom. The victim and the woman had moved to the far right corner of the room, but it was obvious they were sharing a passionate kiss. Sunny nonchalantly fast-forwarded the kissing scenes, which slowly started to look like preliminaries as time went by, bestowing a sense of awkwardness in the conference room. Kyuhyun cleared his throat and shifted his weight from one side of his chair to the other trying to avoid eye contact with Sooyoung, who was fidgeting in her own chair. Sunny started the video again when the two individuals stopped and moved towards the storage room.

“Do we have another angle of that?“ asked Kyuhyun.

“No we don’t,“ growled Sunny. “I can try and triangulate?“

“There is no need,“ replied Kyuhyun. “If we can prove that she was the only one there when he was killed, we have our killer. He died instantly, right?“ he asked, turning his attention back to Sooyoung.

“Affirmative,“ replied Sooyoung.

“Let’s wait and see what happens,“ ordered Kyuhyun, staring at the screen. The trio waited for a period of fifteen minutes before they saw the woman come out of the storage room. They then saw her small frame quickly exit the room.

“Can we run a facial recognition on her?” asked Kyuhyun, his tone sounding more like an order. Sunny mumbled something in agreement and grabbed another electronic tablet. Sooyoung watched the petite-framed woman skilfully manoeuvre herself on the government’s database, which had the identities of each Korean citizen according to their passport and identification cards.

“Found a match,” Sunny announced, after a few minutes, blowing up an identity record. “Her name is Choi Najeong, married to Cho Donggyun,” announced Sunny.

“He’s one of the investors,” exhaled Sooyoung, amazed at how quickly the case was getting solved.

“That gives us motive,” added Kyuhyun, getting up. “I’ll go ask the judge immediately for an arrest warrant.”

“There is only one problem,” interrupted Sunny. “She’s five centimeters shorter than our victim.” Kyuhyun slouched back in his chair, growling something under his breath.

“Did someone else go in after her? An angry husband, maybe?” asked the man in charge of the investigation.

“I can check,” offered Sunny, starting the video from where they had left it. Sooyoung stared at the screen, giving the impression that she was analyzing the video, but she wasn’t. Her eyes had gone out of focus and she was recalculating her findings.

“Stop the video,” she ordered, after much internal deliberation. “Choi Najeong is our killer.”

“You just said the killer was taller than him,” countered Kyuhyun, starting to doubt his colleague. Was Sooyoung capable of framing an innocent person in order to finish with an investigation early?

“She was wearing heels in the video. Those heels are at least six centimeters and would put her on par with him. I am sure that if we retrieve them we might even find traces of blood or his DNA on them.”

“Doctor Choi, you never fail at impressing me,” announced Kyuhyun, closing his case file, and getting up. “I’ll be expecting your report as soon as possible.”

“Luna is on it,” she answered, offering him her best smirk, proud of herself. Kyuhyun chuckled at her confidence, bid farewell to Sunny and Sooyoung, and left the room, ready to make an arrest.

“He still doesn’t remember?” asked Sunny, when Kyuhyun had left the room. Sooyoung’s eyes opened wide in surprise and she looked at Sunny in disbelief.

“Kyuhyun and I did our police training together,” explained Sunny. “We are more than just coworkers.” Sooyoung sighed and looked in the distance.

“It seems like all the world knows except him,” she muttered. Sunny gave her a sad smile, pain was written all over the doctor’s face.

“You are a doctor. I am sure you can find a way of making him remember, before it’s too late,” encouraged Sunny.

“Trust me, I’ve tried everything,” replied Sooyoung, finally making eye contact with Sunny.

It was Friday night and Kyuhyun had finally closed the case of the murdered investor, yet he was back at the same gym where the businessman was killed. He stood behind the glass window and looked at the women practice their exercises. He was waiting for the love of his life to finish. He stared at her body as she stretched and moved her body to the rhythm of the music. Somehow, just by looking at her from behind, he knew it she the woman that he loved. It amazed him at how quickly he managed to identify her out of all the women in the classroom. She was truly the one. Suddenly, he felt something poke his and he jumped in surprise.

“What are you looking at?” asked Victoria, her yoga mat bag strapped around her chest.

“I thought it was your classroom,” he answered, confused.

“Silly rabbit,” teased Victoria, pinching his cheek lightly. “I was in the other classroom,” she said, pointing at the one next door. “Whatever, let’s go. I am starving! I heard there is a really nice taco shop around here, let’s go try it!” she insisted, pulling on his hand. Baffled Kyuhyun followed, but he still allowed his gaze to wonder towards the woman he was starring at. As if on cue, the woman turned sideways, evidently laughing at a comment her neighbour had said. Kyuhyun’s heart skipped a beat when he recognized Sooyoung’s smile. He wanted to smile back, to wave at her, but he remembered she wasn’t looking towards him and Victoria was already pulling him away, away from the woman who haunted his dreams.
