Over one hundred years prior to the beginning of the story, giant humanoid creatures called Titans suddenly appeared and nearly wiped out humanity, devouring them without remorse or reason. What remains of humanity now resides within a country surrounded by three enormous concentric walls: Wall Maria (outermost), Wall Rose (middle), and Wall Sina (innermost). Inside these walls, humanity has still not lived in peace as the fact of Titans are still wandering around out of the wall and there is still some possibility for them to actually strike in, eventhough they are known for being 'retarded'. The threat of a giant 60-meter (200 ft) tall Titan called the Colossus Titan to mysteriously appears and breaches the wall, is also something to be feared about.

Very little is known about the Titans and their origins. All that is known is that they are giant humanoids that vary between 3 and 15 meters in height, with the exception of the so-named Colossus Titan, and they instinctively attack and devour ordinary humans on sight. However, they apparently do not require food for sustenance, as they do not prey on other animals and survived for one hundred years in a human-free environment prior to the inner wall breach. Most of their energy has been found to come from sunlight, though they remain active, however sluggish, in the absence of light. They wander , though they lack any reproductive organs and he majority of Titans possess masculine types. Their skin is tough and difficult to penetrate and they have the ability to regenerate after a short time. Their only apparent weakness is a spot on the nape of the neck where, when cut deep enough, effectively kills the Titan. This revelation led to the development of  the Vertical Maneuvering Equipment which allows trained humans to navigate quickly in a three-dimensional space. Although it permits great mobility to a skilled user, it carries a large risk of overtaxing the muscles, requiring extensive physical conditioning and agility.

Due to the fear of Titans, Humanity's defense against Titans is a full-time, professional army trained to deal with Titans. The military is divided into three divisions: the Survey Corps, which explores outside human territory to hostile areas in a bid for expansion, lately receiving a new mission from the Capital to research the Titans and where they originate from; the Garrison, which patrols and maintains the Walls keeping Titans out and acting as the first to engage the Titans if the gate is destroyed; and the Military Police, the top-ranking soldiers who serve as the personal guards for the king and maintain order within the Walls.

To be in one of these three devisions, each recruits shall do their trainings under the Training Corps. The training usually takes up to 2 years, depending on how good and skillful the soldier is. After they graduate from the Training Corps, these new recruits would then given the choice to continue to do their duty to defend the humanity by joining the Military Devisions, or to come back to their homeplace. Once a soldier chosen their next path to one of the Military Devisions, they would need to do another training based on their specialized devision. 

But, what would  happen when the Titan strikes the Wall again and showed that  these soldiers are not ready or prepared enough  to defend the Humanity? Each soldiers from the three different devisions would be drawn back to the Training Corps and they would need to redo their training, together with  their juniors whom just entered the squad. These special soldiers might have known better things about Titans and more skills, but these new recruits are not the type of  people to underestimate with.

With this fact, what kind of adventure will the thirty people have as they need to do their training in the Training Corps? Will they graduate and be prepared to face the Titans? Will the 1004th Training Squad be the best graduating class ever recorded in the History of Human Kind?
