The Switch

A few more days passed, Sunhee watched the dripping rain from the window. She was bored as hell. She tapped the window as the raindrops slowly raced down the glass.

“Morning, Sunhee,” greeted Dongwoon as he entered the living room with a cup of tea and a newspaper.

Sunhee lifted up her head that was resting on the window pane. “Morning,” she replied, softly.

“Why so weary?” asked Dongwoon as he sat on the lounge chair.

Sunhee looked at the antique clock up on the wall. “During this hour I would be at my office, making calls, typing schedules and stuff. To be here doing nothing, it feels weird.”

“What was your job again?” asked Dongwoon.

“I worked at the embassy as a translator. I’m also a storywriter. I post short stories on my blog,” replied Sunhee. She turned herself to face Dongwoon and looked at him.

“Why don’t you write stories now to kill your boredom?” asked Dongwoon, not glancing away from his newspaper.

Sunhee kept looking at him. “I don’t have any potential ideas. I have been imprisoned in this house for God knows how long.”

Dongwoon chuckled. “Do you want to go out?”

Sunhee’s face lightened up. “Where?”

Dongwoon checked his watch. “Well, since it’s still in the morning, I still have to go to work. Want me to arrange a dinner outside?”

“That sounds great!” Sunhee looked so excited, she couldn’t stop smiling. “What time will you be home?”

“Around 4pm.”

Sunhee stared at the clock. “Then should I sleep the whole day waiting for you to come home?”

It seems like Dongwoon was done with his newspaper. He shrugged. “I don’t know. Do you want to come with me to work? I could use some help in translating.”

Sunhee’s smile grew even wider. I miss working so much! Hell yeah, I would come!

“I would love to help!” said Sunhee.

Dongwoon smiled and folded his newspaper, only to see Sunhee’s precious smiling face. The rain has stopped and the sun shining through the window behind her practically made her look like an angel. He was dumbfounded for a few seconds before getting back to his senses.

“Uhm, great! You should go get ready, we’ll be leaving in half an hour,” said Dongwoon, clearing his throat.

Sunhee stood up. “Okay, doctor.”

She skipped her way up to her bedroom. Dongwoon shook his head and ruffled up his hair.

She sure is driving me crazy, in a good way.

Two hours later, Dongwoon and Sunhee arrived at the hospital. Dongwoon opened the door to his room where it was twice bigger than his study room back at home.

“Wow,” said Sunhee as she entered the room. Dongwoon smiled and closed the door. He walked over to his Mac and turned it on. He gestured Sunhee to come near. Sunhee nodded and walked to his chair.

“You see here, I got a few articles and some researches that need translating,” Dongwoon opened the files. Sunhee leaned closer to get a better view.

“So do you want rough translations or soft ones? When do you need them done?” asked Sunhee.

Sunhee’s mouth was so close to Dongwoon’s ear, it sent shivers down his spine. He uncomfortably scrolled down the cursor as he cleared his throat.

“There is no specific deadline, if you’re done with one article, I’d like to review it so you should bring it back to me once you’re done with it,” explained Dongwoon.

Sunhee nodded. Dongwoon felt like he didn’t get an answer so he turned around to ask again but he found his face so close to Sunhee that if he moved an inch closer, there was a huge probability that they would kiss.

Both of them were taken aback. Sunhee immediately stood up straight and took one step backwards while Dongwoon helplessly moved back to lean on his desk. The situation turned very awkward for both of them.

Dongwoon nervously scratched the back of his neck. “I’m… sorry I shouldn’t have turned all of a sudden…”

“No, I’m sorry, I was standing too close,” said Sunhee.

It was silent for a few seconds. So silent that Sunhee was afraid her heartbeat would be heard throughout the whole room.

“I…” Dongwoon stood up. Sunhee unconsciously took another step backwards. “I need to go see a friend. You can start working if you want.”

Sunhee looked down and nodded. Dongwoon carefully walked pass her and went for the door. As soon as he was out, Sunhee exhaled and fanned herself.

She looked at the mirror beside the shelves. Her cheeks were legit red. “Dear God, I hope he didn’t see this!” said Sunhee as she kept fanning herself. She then took a deep breath and started translating, hoping she could get the incident off her mind.
