When We Merge

"Where are you bringing me, Bambi?"

"To eat."

"Dear sir, my mom cooked two plates of eggs, one plate of shrimps, two plates of fish, three plates of vegetables, one bowl of soup, and a whole ing chicken. I ate them."

"And so?" Luhan ignored your words and continued pulling you along to who-knows-where.

"So I'm not going to become a fat deer like you."

"Your mom cooks well, but I'm still hungry," he stops walking and spun around to pout.

You reached out your hand to ruffle his hair. He ducks his head and let you sink your palm into his soft, warm honey bangs. He chuckled, grabbed your wrist and pulled you towards him, to which you gasped and automatically stepped back.

But then you failed because then again, he was, after all, a deer (category: male) who was stronger than you.

"Lulu, what are —"

"Shhh," Luhan pressed a finger to your lips, and you were about to cringe when you felt the uneven beating of your heart.

What the is happening?

"I want to eat," Luhan stares into your eyes, and you felt completely under his gaze. You seemed so small in front of him, and what's more, you felt yourself shrinking.

"A-and?"

"Will you eat with me?"

"F-fat d-deer."

"So I'll take it as a yes."

Luhan leaned in even closer for good measure, and your noses were so close till it was almost touching. You didn't know if he realised, but you felt stuffy and hot. He was so close that you could almost reach out to cup his face and kiss him senseless. But you stayed where you are, with no move to back out or to take it further.

And he stayed the same.

"Hold my hand and let's go," his breath mingled on your skin. You unconsciously stuck out your tongue and swept it across your dried lips, gulping when a small smile graced his own.

But then he just had to lean in further and place his mouth near your ear, and his breaths hit a sensitive spot between your neck and earlobe. You arched your back, your eyes widening as you felt a tinge of electricity shoot up your spine and down again, resting beneath the place between your legs.

Bambi, you've no idea how much trouble you've caused.

", I'll buy you another Pororo item if you would eat with me."

You didn't know whether to kiss him or to slap him.

The both of you stayed silent as he continued pulling you along, probably because you were still stunned about how intimate the both of you were, and Luhan's mind was probably filled with food to even speak.

Along the way, you began to question yourself. Since when were you that close with him? Was he sending you signals? Did he do it out of food? Does he like me? Do I like him back?

And then something hit you. Could he possibly be flirting with you?

You didn't know Luhan well enough to judge him; it was him that was always getting to know you more, and not the other way around. You wanted to know him better (so you could judge him), but you didn't know where to start. You knew it would end up with you spewing profanities or talking about grapes and Pororo, so you kept your mouth shut, not intending to speak to Luhan. Yet.

"WE'RE HERE!" He screamed in your face, making you cover your ears in shock.

Well, he was back to his own crazy self. Where was the manliest and iest Bambi just a few minutes ago? You couldn't help but sigh in disappointment; you really wanted to be treated a little more differently than always getting spit in the face with vulgarities.

Because you're still a girl after all. And which ing girl in this ing world wouldn't want to be showered with some love and seduction? Okay, maybe NOT you, but it was better than receiving words every, single day.

"What are we eating again?"

"MEAAAAAAAAAT."

You blinked; Luhan likes meat? Well, that wasn't hard to know, since he's practically carnivorous (you found that out just today when he was eating with you and your mom – he had so much hatred in his eyes when looking at the vegetables - judgemental freak), and so he pushed open the doors to the store, before beckoning you to follow him in.

"Ma'am, a table for two please. As usual, table 7."

It wasn't exactly the most romantic or cleanest eatery, but the atmosphere was highly comfortable and enjoyable for all customers. A large 'Welcome!' was hung at the entrance, with waves of bright colours running through it. The shop was slightly cramped, but the spaces between each table was wide enough for two people to get through it and for some privacy.

You tore your gaze away and turned to look at Luhan instead, who was holding the menu in one hand and gesturing wildly at the old lady boss with the other. The two of them seemed to know each other well, for they were laughing away, as if chatting about the old times. You caught on something about someone falling off the swing, so you frowned but soon lost interest and looked down, fumbling with the sling on your bag.

You felt two pairs of eyes staring at you, and you looked up to find Luhan and the old woman looking in your direction.

The old lady had a few creases between her eyebrows, and some parts of her hair were already distinctly white. She had a small smile spread across her lips, and her eyes formed into two, tiny slits when she looked at you while nodding.

"Are you his girlfriend?" She opens to ask.

Dead silence.

Somehow, Luhan was stuck in between. This has never happened before. Either is was an immediate 'yes', or a clean 'no'. This time round, he felt helpless, and so he kept his mouth shut.

You unconsciously started to blush, an obvious tinge of pink appearing on your cheeks. You felt blissful yet upset at the same time. You were happy that he didn't reject that embarrassing statement straight away, but then he didn't agree to it either. You shut your eyes tightly, your hands curled into fists at your sides. So what does he mean and what does he want? Suddenly, you felt desperate for an answer.

Blame your hormones.

So you were planning to let him answer that, but Luhan seemed lost in own world no matter how many times you kicked him under the table. (He would usually glare and mutter a '' under his breath.) But he was quiet. This was really unlike him.

Growing worried and a tad impatient, you narrowed your eyes and called out his name softly.

"Luhan?"

No response.

"Bambiiiiii."

Plain silence.

"Holy cow. Luhan!"

Still nothing.

"GODS, YOU , WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?"

You slammed your fists against the table, planning to startle him and snap him out of his whatever trance, but you didn't know you were so violent until you heard a PANG! sound that you realised...

The ing vinegar bottle fell to the ground and a puddle soon formed on the ground.

A few heads turned but Luhan still had no response. Hell, he didn't even blink. You swear you were going to suffocate if you didn't get a glass of water. You reached out and gulped the liquid down hungrily, feeling it slide down your tight throat.

"Uh," the old woman tapped your shoulder, her creases on her foreheads increasing as she lifted her eyebrows. "That boyfriend of yours is okay, right?"

You immediately choked on your water, and only that was when Luhan finally looked up (your heart stopped) and answered.

"Yes, she's my girlfriend."

— — —

"Ma'am, a table for one please. Oh and, can I request for something?"

She turns to glance questioningly at you, and you couldn't help but notice that her hair has now large patches of white and her skin gnarled like the bark of a tree. But her smile doesn't change; it was still as sweet.

"Table 7." That's it. Just two words, and she gets it.

She lead you in, and all the while your eyes wandered around the place, taking in the aroma that never failed to make you feel heady.

There were minimal changes, just that a few posters and family photos were taken down. The tables were placed with equal distance, still being slightly cramped but with sufficient privacy for every guest seated. You felt a lump rise up your throat as you approached the same table, and you sat down with your legs crossed, staring at the empty seat beside you.

How you wished he was there right now, smiling like an idiot and talking about someone falling off a damn swing.

— — —

My girlfriend. My holy, ing girlfriend.

His words kept replaying itself in your mind, and you stoned, having the aftermath of someone indirectly confessing to you. In a meat shop. With cooked meatballs in front of you.

How in the world did this happen?

You poked your chopsticks through a meatball, and it rolled over the grill and straight into the fire.

Poor meatball. It's on fire.

You peeked at Luhan who was avoiding your gaze and stuffing himself with meat. The atmosphere couldn't be any more awkward and tense.

You honestly felt a bubbly feeling building up inside of you when he suddenly blurted that out. That you were his girlfriend. It felt good to get confirmation, but all the same, you wondered whether it was too abrupt. Both of you were clearly getting along well (like brothers and sisters – with an extra tinge of violence) and were comfortable being close around each other, but you were afraid that this sudden burst of confession would prevent the both of you from being just like before. Like, there would be a thin, translucent wall stuck in the middle of your friendship (you don't even know whether to use that term or not anymore). You enjoyed the joking and horsing around, and you would be utterly devastated if he shuts you out and starts avoiding you for the rest of his life, and worse, getting autism or something.

"Bambi?"

"Hmm?" Luhan chewed and hummed in reply, but he didn't look up.

"Bambi!"

"Y-yeah?" He still didn't look up.

"Are you an ostrich?"

Luhan let his head hang low for a few seconds, before sighing and lifting his head to look at you. His face seemed confident and not at all nervous or embarrassed, but beneath the table his hands were a wringing mess (which he hoped you didn't notice). He was shaking and feeling all jittery. Thousands and millions of dumb (and couldn't be dumber) questions crossed his mind, which didn't help him but made him feel worse and more helpless.

What if you rejected him? What if you decided to avoid him? What if you didn't want to see him again? What if you viewed him as a freak? Can he be a deer god and turn back time? Holy cow, what if —

"Back to earth, Bambi. Stop spacing out, you're scaring me."

You snapped your fingers and waved them right in front of his face. He jerked back, almost toppling off his chair if you didn't reach out and grab his arm in time. His eyes rounded like the meatball on fire and he slowly turned to stare at you. He pointed his finger towards his arm which has your hand wrapped tightly around it.

"Did you just touch me?"

You narrowed your eyes and nodded hesitantly, still not letting go.

"Yes Bambi. An angel just touched you. Are you happy?" You rolled your eyes, while Luhan continued gasping loudly at your hand.

"What the is wrong with you? We've touched millions of times."

"Woman, that sounds absolutely wrong —"

"Well, ostrich, you're being like a psycho that just escaped from the mental hospital so would you please close your mouth?"

"Hold on, Bambi is enough for me and I do NOT need another ty nickname."

You laughed silently, glad that Luhan was back to his own self. But one problem... He was still traumatised.

"Woman, tell me what I said."

"You said I was your girlfriend. Honestly, do you fantasise about me?"

"I do —"

"I'm utterly flattered."

"I was going to say I do not until you cut me off —"

"Bambi, relax, I will take your words to heart."

Luhan groaned and laid his head flat against the table. You giggled and poked the side of his face.

"I like the distressed side of you, Bambi. But really, do you mean it?"

Luhan sat up straight after hearing your serious tone. He bit his lip.

He felt like dying. Goodness, he wrecked his life and his entire appetite. He doesn't even know if he means it. Do I like her? Do I not like her? Do I hate her? Do I not hate her?

He didn't even have time to control his thoughts when you cleared your throat and looked at him square in the eyes.

"Do you need confirmation?"

"W-what confirmation?" Luhan jumped a little and stared incredulously at you.

You sighed before inching closer to him, dragging your chair along with you. Luhan visibly flinched (either by the scraping noises the chair made while being dragged, or by how close the two of you were) and gulped, with you noticing how his Adam's apple was moving down then up, then down his throat again.

"What confirmation?" He repeats, sounding much more definite than the last time he spoke.

"You know, to make sure you really do like me —"

"I don't have to smash my face against the wall again, right?"

"Hell, no!"

You propped both of your arms on the table and stared intently at him. "To get the confirmation you want..."

Luhan clasped his hands together in nervousness as he waits for your answer, while you placed your head between your palms and smirked.

"Kiss me."

— — —

You couldn't help but occasionally glance at a boy sitting at the far end of the eatery. He was oddly and eerily familiar, but you couldn't seem to put your finger on it.

Who was he?

You shook your head to clear away the thoughts and made a reach for the vinegar bottle. But then being your usual clumsy self, you accidentally knocked over the bottle, earning a few heads glancing your way.

You felt yourself redden and look up, realising that the mysterious male was looking right at you. His expression was, well, blank. It was as if he was faceless, or with an opaque mask shielding his face. He had whitish-blonde hair, a sharp nose and a distinct jawline. His mouth was curved into a thin, straight line that was seemingly parallel to his eyebrows, giving him a distant and intimidating look. You frowned and looked back down into your bowl and stared for a moment.

Something inside you clicked, and you immediately slapped your chopsticks down onto the table.

That day. That day in Luhan's classroom. That streak of blonde that flashed past the windows.

Your head snapped up immediately and you expected to see him staring back at you.

But by the time you looked up, he wasn't there anymore.
