Little Miracle

Like a Scarecrow

Holding it against Aunt Kim, a motherly and proud smile appeared on her face as she brought her hand up to take it in her hand, the scanned picture of the child Jae Eun was hiding from her.

“You’ve promise me you won’t tell my parents or Taekwoon parents about this,” Jae Eun made a face, unsure if she should feel happy about Aunt Kim knowing the facts that she tried hard to seal from everybody knowledge.

“And don’t tell Jung Taekwoon-sshi too that Ahjumma knows our secret.”

Aunt Kim nodded, not really listening to her.

“What the doctor says?” her eyes continuously glued on the scanned picture. She began to fall in love with the little miracle she just seen.

“Healthy, my baby is healthy,” Jae Eun replied, feeling warm all of sudden. She brought her hand on her lower belly as she caressed it gently.

Giving back the picture, Aunt Kim pulled Jae Eun into a big and warm hug. Jae Eun was startled but her muscles began to loosen as she patted the back of the older woman in front of her.

“Taekwoon is going to have a child himself,” Aunt Kim spoke softly as she the back of Jae Eun gently. A mixture of feelings flooded in and she couldn’t help but to be overwhelmed by her sudden emotion rushing in.

“I’m happy that he trusts me in taking care of you,” she said, in tears.

Hearing that, Jae Eun softened as she quit patting and kept her ears open.

“I’m sorry,” Aunt Kim broke her embrace and let go of Jae Eun. She instantly wiped her tears and forced a smile, “This is just overwhelming, ignore me.”

Jae Eun grabbed her arm, “There’s nothing to sorry about. I’m happy that Ahjumma knows…It’s not a bad decision to let Ahjumma knows, at least there are more people can take care of me and my baby.”

Aunt Kim pulled her motherly smile again as she nodded, “Hurry, call Taekwoon about your baby’s first picture.”

“Yes?” Jae Eun appeared distracted all of sudden.

“He must be happy to see it, don’t make him take a long time to see it,” Aunt Kim encouraged with glistening eyes.

Jae Eun seemed hesitant for a moment as she initially didn’t tell Taekwoon about the appointment, “But he’s at work. I don’t want to bother him while he’s at work.”

“He won’t mind,” Aunt Kim insisted placing Jae Eun in a difficult position.

Nodding, Jae Eun found a way to stop Aunt Kim to continuously begging her. “I’ll send him the picture. See?” Jae Eun then captured the picture by her cell phone and chose another person to send the picture instead to her husband.

Showing that the picture had been sent, she observed Aunt Kim’s facial expression, hoping that she wouldn’t notice that she didn’t send it to Taekwoon, but instead to a friend.

A friend that she had not seen since the last time he appeared in front of Taekwoon’s house door.

Han Sanghyuk.

Aunt Kim seemed happy after being convinced that Taekwoon received the picture and Jae Eun couldn’t help but to feel guilty behind the older woman.

Not long after sending the picture of the ultrasound picture, her cell phone vibrated.

“This is the first time I see an ultrasound picture of a little wonder! Wow, the child is beautiful as her mother, I’m afraid I will fall in love straight away as soon as the little wonder is born. You won’t mind to have a handsome son-in-law, right? Wait, what if a little prince came out? Kekeke. I’m just kidding. It’s been a while, how are you? – Hyuk”

A small smile appeared on her face as she read the text message she just received.

“Don’t worry, we’re healthy. Thanks for asking. Hyuk-sshi.”

‘SEND’.

---

The next day, Jae Eun kept staring on the scanned picture of her little miracle. Taekwoon still had no idea that she had an appointment yesterday and that Aunt Kim already knew about their little secret.

She remembered how Aunt Kim examined her from the top of her head down to her toe with a pair of suspicious eyes. She held her breathe; fear that her secret would be revealed in a blink of an eye.

“Why should hide a good news?” she spoke. Jae Eun stared at Aunt Kim as at the same time she wondered if Taekwoon had said anything about her condition to Aunt Kim.

She was in her three months pregnancy and nothing seemed obvious as far as she concerned and anyone couldn’t tell if she was pregnant if she showed them her belly.

“What am I babbling about… I don’t want to get fired,” Aunt Kim suddenly said as she turned to wash the coffee cup.

“Ahjumma.”

Aunt Kim froze and slowly turned towards Jae Eun, eyes scanning the lady of the house.

“Can you accompany me to a hospital? I have an appointment…”

A breathy chuckle escaped Aunt Kim’s mouth, she looked satisfied, “I know my reading can’t be wrong.”

“What reading? Ahjumma, do you know how to read people’s mind?” Jae Eun panicked.

Laughing, Aunt Kim shook her head, “That’s incredible if I have that kind of superpower.”

“Then… How do you know?”

“It’s just I can sense it in a way…” Aunt Kim replied and quickly finishing her task in the kitchen.

Since Aunt Kim herself also have children, perhaps she could tell just by looking someone. At least, with that thought, she didn’t have to worry much about breaking the secret.

Now that even Aunt Kim knew about her condition, she wondered when she would be ready to tell her parents and her parents in law about what she supposed to be good news to the people that expecting the first grandchildren in their family.

She hadn’t really had time to discuss about this to Taekwoon since she didn’t see him much even though they live under the same roof.

Sighing out loud, she placed the ultrasound picture of her little wonder into her pregnancy diary. She hadn’t written anything on the first page of the book and she didn’t feel like to write anything. Closing the diary, she hid it under her pillow and wondered if she really was ready to welcome the child into her life.

She wasn’t confident enough to be a mother, especially a good mother.

Would she be able to be a good mother to the little wonder that was growing as time passed?

She hoped so…

And how she hoped that Jung Taekwoon would be a good father too…

She didn’t care if they continue the marriage without love between them, as long as the innocent child got the attention and love from both of the parent that responsible for the birth.

It was sad that, for now…

The little miracle grew without attention from the father who made the miracle happen…

If only she could undo what happened.

Her cell phone vibrated, startling her.

Hyuk’s name showed up as the caller ID. A huge question mark appeared on her face, why was he calling at broad daylight. Wasn’t he supposed to be at his work, doing whatever his work supposed to do?

“Hyuk-sshi,” she called as soon as she put her cell phone closed to her ear.

Immediately, she stood up to her door and to the main door. Opening it, her eyes met with Hyuk’s car right outside the gate. Hyuk who was standing against the gate caught her eyes; he smiled as soon as they made an eye contact.

“Can I come in?” he asked through the call.

A chuckle escaped as she crossed her arms against her torso, “Let me see…”

---

Aunt Kim and Hyuk recognised each other and Hyuk was especially surprised to see her in the house. Seeing that, Jae Eun felt a bit relief to let Hyuk entered. That way, Aunt Kim wouldn’t judge of her bringing other man into her husband’s house.

“What bring you to here?” Jae Eun questioned, pleased to have a visitor. “Does Jung Taekwoon-sshi know that you’re coming?”

Hyuk took a sip of the juice Aunt Kim just prepared for him, “Can’t I drop in on my friends’ house for a minute and bring this cute cakes to her?”

He placed the box in front both of them as he carefully opened the box. Jae Eun’s eyes focused on the box, she swallowed, excitedly anticipating what’s in the inside.

The moment Hyuk revealed how the cakes look like, watered.

She really wanted to have the sweet cakes taste in as quick as possible. “Wow,” she praised as she brought her hand to the cake to take a but Hyuk prevented her.

“Hyuk-sshi, you can’t do this to a pregnant lady!” she protested right away making Hyuk laughed.

“You should have a hand mirror with you and take a look of yourself now,” he laughed again.

Jae Eun crossed her arms against her torso with turned to a pout. “Look how happy he is to pick on a pregnant lady…”

His laugh ceased as he got up to have some forks and small plate so that she could have the cake properly. “Do not touch the cake before I get the plates, stay behave.”

Jae Eun nodded but then as soon as Hyuk disappeared from her sight, she placed a finger on the white cream and has a taste secretly. Hyuk then came and took a seat, scanning the cake. Jae Eun pulled a poker face and looked away.

“Foul play, I can see the mark you left, Hwang Jae Eun-sshi.”

Hearing that, Jae Eun couldn’t help but to burst out a big laugh.

“I shouldn’t have bringing you a cake, look how quick you change in front of the cake,” he complained as he cut the cake and placed it nicely on the small plate. Holding it to Jae Eun, a wide smile plastered on her face as she wasted no time devouring the irresistible sweetness.

Hyuk only could smile on her sight, happy to see her eating well.

“Wait…” Jae Eun stopped eating.

Hyuk arched his eyebrows in response.

“You didn’t answer my question about Jung Taekwoon-ssi, did he know you’re here?”

The happiness she got from the cake a second ago diminished, she began to wonder if Taekwoon aware that his friend was at his house with his wife.

She felt bad all of sudden.

“Right, you should be at work right now, why are you still here?”

Hyuk nodded, “I’m the son of the boss, I can go out anytime I want.” He acted cocky jokingly. “And yes, I met him at lunch today.”

“You guys met?”

Hyuk responded with another nod, “Aren’t you wondering why I come bringing you a cake out of nowhere? I heard it from him that you like cakes.”

He grinned. She nodded, satisfied. To be honest, she didn’t think much about why he brought a cake out of the blue; she just thought it was an act of kindness of a human being.

“Well, thank you for the cakes. It’s delicious and beautiful,” she grinned back.

“It’s my pleasure. It’s an honour to be able to bring beautiful and delicious food to the little one so that the little one can grow up beautifully too.”

“I should have known earlier you didn’t come to see me, I’m hurt,” Jae Eun joked.

Hyuk laughed, “But really, I was so surprise to see the picture you sent to me. It makes me appreciate and believe to God’s miracles.”

Jae Eun smiled softly, “Thank you, it’s good to hear that you like it. I was afraid to get response like ‘What is that you send? I don’t get it.’ “

“It can’t be,” Hyuk laughed and so Jae Eun.

“And oh, I told Taekwoon hyung about how beautiful his child is and he looked at me confuse. He must be shock to know that I saw the picture too. I thought you told him that you’re sending me the picture,” he continued laughing.

Jae Eun’s heart sank all of sudden. Her laughter stopped and her face fell, “Yes…?”

Hyuk who didn’t notice something was going on continued to laugh, “You should see his face at that time when I show him the picture you sent.”

“What did he say about it? Did he say anything…?”

Hyuk stopped his laugh as he placed his hand on his stomach, feeling the ache spreading. “He said he always know it that both of you will make a beautiful child. What a jerk. He’s funny.”

Jae Eun forced a smile; she knew Hyuk just made her life difficult.

But she didn’t blame him for something he didn’t know.

It was herself to be blame; she should not have sent the picture to anyone else and just kept it in her cell phone.

Her eyes averted on the wall clock, not really want to know what time was it, but thinking, how should she face Taekwoon after this?
