Our story starts off in South Korea, or what is left of South Korea.

 

 

The country was split into 12 Districts, ranging from 1 to 12. The districts did not have their own particular names, after all, they did not have any living significance. The twelve districts were simply the living tools for the luxurious life of the Capitol, each specialising in a specific form of work labour to keep the Capitol living: such as Fishing for food, Textile for clothing, Masonary for armed protection.The higher the District number, the poorer the District. Although an uprising had been made towards the Capitol, the Capitol was by far too powerful. The first rebellion was long ago, and so was District 13, crumbling into the grounds as if it had never existed.

 

 

Hense, as punishment to keep the Districts in fear, it was agreed that each year, the twelve districts ruled under the Capitol shall offer up two children to be sent to the Capitol, where they will fight for their own survival in the bloodbath of The Hunger Games, proving to the Districts that the Capitol will always have power over them. So much power that they can inhumanely send their children to their death.

 

 

There wasn't much to live for, Baekhyun thought, but taking responsibility for the wellbeing of his family was enough encouragement to keep him afloat. Witnessing the manslaughtering of their own father had taken a huge toll on the entire family. His mother had taken the hugest impact, internally mentally unstable to the extent where she is unable to work, leaving her to dwell in the depths of the dark abyssal of the traumatic past.

 

 

It was at a young age that Baekhyun swore to step forward for his family, the only thing he had left that he really cared for. His mother and his little brother Baekbeom was the only thing he had left in his life, and Baekhyun will go to his full extends and potential to relentlessly love and treasure them, keeping them away from any harm what was to come. Who knew harm was to come so soon.

"Happy 12th Birthday to my precious little baby Toucan." It was a silly nickname Baekhyun had given to Baekbeom at a young age, but he couldn't help but to simply adore the simplicity of the name. The coloured beak really represented his cheerful and lively personality, not to mention the long beak really reflected on his nature of always having to stick his nose into Baekhyun's business. Not that he mind his eager little brother really, it just came to show the strong bond that they had with each other."

 

 

"I know this isn't much but here." With that, Baekhyun kneeled down to the tiny height of his little brother, pinning the slightly rusted golden pin on the inner collar of his button up shirt.

 

 

"A Phoenix?"

 

 

Baekhyun simply laughed at the giggly eyes looking back up at his height in utter innocence and confusion. He really couldn't help but ruffle the messy locks of Baekbeom as the little child pouted, not amused at being teased by his big brother!

 

 

"It sure is, kiddo. Although the Phoenix had much more of a meaning back then...much more of a meaning...but today it symbolises many things. The life of a Phoenix is very simple. Upon its death as it burns into ashes, it is said that those ashes are to be reincarnated into another life, a new start for a Phoenix. Well, this is for you. Even though you may fall to the grounds with utter disappointment, loss of hope or anything for that matter, remember that the scabs may hurt, but you are still able to stand back up strong, and start again. This is the symbol of resilience."

 

 

Although Baekbeom still seemed slightly puzzled from such a philosophical lesson, nevertheless, he smiled, showing the same beautiful crescent eye smile that they both shared. A gift that was eternally to be with them by their father.

 

 

'Father, I hope your resting well. I will take over from here. I hope you're proud of me..'

 

 

Even with his mind set through the pride he had for his family, it wasn't enough to miss out on the fear lodged through the younger boy below him, body shaking as if an early winter breeze had struck the boiling summer time. Eyes unconcentrated as he securely held the pin amongst his palm, it was visible to any mans eye that the fragile boy was scared.

 

 

Baekhyun kneeled down and took all of the boy in, knowing exactly what the boy had occupied in his mind.

 

 

"It's the reaping today..."

 

 

That was true and it couldn't have been in any worst time. Instead of getting to spend the entire day together, spoiling his little brother with love and affection, they had to attend the Annual Reaping for the Hunger Games, where two tribute's name will be reaped out of a pool of names of District 12 children.

 

 

Baekhyun gave a reassuring squeeze on his delicate shoulders, proving to him that things really will be okay.

 

 

"There are hundreds of other children here in District 12 and your names only in there once, they're not going to pick you."

 

 

It was obvious Baekbeom was extremely hesitant on believing his brother for once but his brother had never failed and disappoint him, so why now?

 

 

"Are you sure?"

 

 

Baekhyun stood up and stretched up the knots in his body, letting out a tired yawn and stretching his arms in the air, eventually flailing them around to loosen up.

 

 

"What are the odds, Little Baek."
