The Calm before the Storm

Control

The boys returned to Luhan’s place where they applied some minor first aid to Baekhyun. He explained that he had been cornered by some bullies when suddenly light erupted from his body, scaring his attackers.

“I just wanted them to leave me alone,” the bandaged boy sighed as Luhan finished.

“At least you didn’t hurt anybody. Though I think your power understood how you were feeling, I don’t think you’d hurt a fly,” Luhan commented with a sweet smile.

Baekhyun was in awe over this new man who seemed to know him so well even though they just met. Then his eyes shifted to the other two who were watching the two of them very closely.

“So it wasn’t water like we hoped. We ended up with a human light bulb instead,” Sehun couldn’t help but joke with him.

The sweet expression on Baekhyun’s face disappeared with a smirk as he quickly responded, “If only you were as bright as me.”

Sehun wasn’t expecting that from him as Chanyeol broke out into a fit of laughter. Luhan stifled his own laugh though the expression on Sehun’s face was priceless. On the other hand the youngest wanted to come back with something witty but he was at a loss of words. Chanyeol wrapped his arms around Baekhyun, hugging him as he praised him between his laughs.

“Alright it wasn’t that funny!” Sehun snapped at Chanyeol who seemed to be dying.

“I agree it wasn’t that funny,” Baekhyun spoke up, pushing Chanyeol away from him, his heart racing quickly from the sudden hug.

“Well that aside, welcome to my home,” Luhan interrupted as he brought everyone back on track.

He explained everything to the new face just as he had with Chanyeol. Once everything had been said he made sure Baekhyun didn’t have any questions for him.

“So…am I really just a human light bulb to put it bluntly?” he asked with concern.

“I don’t know…with training we’ll see what else you can do with your light,” Luhan tried to answer him truthfully.

“Don’t worry! I’m sure you can do other cool things with your power!” Chanyeol reassured him as he patted Baekhyun on the shoulder.

The taller young man’s smile made Baekhyun feel more at ease, a warmth spreading throughout his body. He felt safe standing beside him, a feeling he hadn’t felt in a long time. He couldn’t believe the kindness he had towards him despite just meeting. Even offering to take him home wasn’t something he was used to. When they walked together Baekhyun was quiet, listening to the ramblings of the chatty Chanyeol.

“So, how long have those guys been bullying you?”

The sudden question caught Baekhyun off guard, his head snapping to look up at Chanyeol.

“Excuse me?”

“It’s obvious that wasn’t the first time. So how long?” Chanyeol explained before asking again.

“It’s been a few years…it was soon after I started college these guys I thought were my friends suddenly me when I stopped doing things for them. Because of them I’ve spent the past few years with no real friends. Isn’t that kind of pathetic? Someone at my age having no one,” Baekhyun explained as he tried to lightly laugh at his situation.

“We’re the same age right? Consider me your friend now. So if those guys try to do anything again just tell them you have a big scary friend who will kick their butts, alright?” Chanyeol confidently assured him before pulling out his phone. “Let’s exchange phone numbers so you can call me if anything happens or we can hang out so they can see you’re not alone anymore-”

Baekhyun cut him off with a simple question, “Why are you so nice to me?”

Chanyeol shut up for a couple minutes as he thought it over before answering, “I don’t know, I’m just drawn to you. Your power is light right? Well I’m fire so maybe your light instantly attracts me.”

The shorter man blushed in embarrassment at those words before Chanyeol added, “I’m a firefly and you’re the bug light!”

Baekhyun shook his head before chuckling lightly. He could understand the strange logic and was glad now that his power was light. It somehow attracted these new guys into his life and suddenly he wasn’t feeling as alone as he was before.

“Uh…you’re glowing again…” Chanyeol spoke up, pointing to Baekhyun.

He was right, the young man’s body was glowing a warm soft light. Chanyeol felt a wave of ease overcome his body, his eyes naturally closing after looking at the light.

“Ah, your light is so…comforting…” he exhaled before looking again at Baekhyun.

He couldn’t help but smile to himself as he watched the light slowly disappear and was replaced with the flustered actions of Baekhyun trying to stop his glow.

The two of them grew close almost instantly since that night, barely a week passing since they met. They hung out as Chanyeol promised, chasing away the bullies from Baekhyun who finally let out his real self. He no longer flinched around the others and joked with Sehun and Luhan when he would come over to train his power. He was a fast learner compared to Chanyeol, learning every day almost something new he could do with his light.

“Can you please stop stealing the energy for your light from my appliances? I have a whole source set aside for you,” Luhan reminded him.

“But my light comes out brighter when I use the energy from the lights instead of your generator,” he explained himself.

“What are you a light snob now?” Sehun joked with him before sending a cold draft his way.

Baekhyun shivered from the wind, sending the youngest a glare before going over to Chanyeol. The giant was busy controlling a small flame that was contained under a bubble, testing his ability to control fire that wasn’t his, when he felt Baekhyun slip his arms around him from behind.

“I’m cold warm me up!” he whined as he tried to warm up using Chanyeol’s natural warmth.

The sudden contact made Chanyeol’s heart race and his mind go unfocused causing the flame under the bubble to swell and flicker rapidly. The two jumped back from fear of the flame which quickly calmed when Chanyeol was no longer focused on it.

“Guys can you not play around, things could get dangerous if you joke around like that,” Luhan scolded them.

The three younger men nodded their heads knowing that he was right. The proof was always in front of them that their powers could easily devour them. Breaking the moment Chanyeol heard his phone ringing from his bag and ran over to answer it.

“Jongin-ah! Sorry sorry I know…tomorrow? Yeah I can meet tomorrow…sure let’s meet there…yes yes I’ll make it up to you with my treat…ok bye!” he talked eagerly into the phone piquing Baekhyun’s interest.

“Was that your friend from the coffee shop?” Sehun asked.

“Yeah, tomorrow he wants to meet up so I’ll probably come over late. Is that ok with you Luhan?” Chanyeol asked.

“Its fine with me don’t think you can skip entirely though!” he answered playfully before going over to turn the flame off.

As he approached his world suddenly felt like it was shaking around him. He collapsed to his knees trying to regain some stability. His ears could no longer hear the cries of the others around him calling out his name. He looked up to see Sehun crouched before him, his hands cupping Luhan’s face as his mouth rapidly moved without anything coming out.

They’ll be sorry…how could they do this to me?

The unfamiliar voice rang in Luhan’s head before the violent shaking and silence ceased. Finally the concerned words from the others flooded his ears.

“I’m ok don’t worry!” he quickly answered not listening to anything they were actually saying.

“You sure don’t look ok, what just happened to you?” Baekhyun asked.

“Did you hear another voice again? Did another power activate?” Sehun fired off more questions.

“I heard something but before that it felt like my world was shaking, it was like being in an earthquake all by myself. I was overcome with an intense emotion and it wasn’t good…if that was a power awakening it’s going to be destructive. I think we should search for it before it deals some heavy damage to the people,” Luhan explained as he was helped up.

The next day Chanyeol met up with his friend as he promised. The two settled at a table inside this time as Jongin joked that if they were outside another person would steal him again. The two played around like usual, but Chanyeol couldn’t keep him mind from wandering time and time again to the thought of the others in search of the newly activated power. He really hoped they would find it before it caused any damage like Luhan had predicted.

“You know something seems a bit different about you lately. Maybe it’s because we haven’t had as much time to hang out since you got involved with those new guys,” Jongin spoke up as he averted his gaze from Chanyeol to the vibrating phone on the table.

“Sorry,” Chanyeol apologized before answering the phone.

“Luhan’s not feeling too good about something. Look outside, those clouds out there are looking ominous and he thinks it might have to do with another power,” Sehun spoke quickly on the other line.

There was a sudden roll of thunder that seemed to shake everything. Everyone in the shop looked around as Chanyeol darted for the window. He looked out and saw the dark clouds above, having formed so quickly when it was supposed to be hot and sunny the entire day.

“I’m going to have to agree those clouds came out of nowhere. Give me five minutes and I’ll be out looking with you guys,” Chanyeol quickly responded before hanging up.

He whipped around when he felt someone grab his wrist only to see Jong In staring up at him sternly. There was another roll of thunder before it suddenly began to downpour outside.

“Where do you think you’re going? Wait for the storm to blow over,” the younger man advised as he held onto Chanyeol tightly.

“Sorry but I have to be somewhere right now,” he brushed him off before heading out the door.

Jongin followed after him outside, the rain drenching them both as the wind picked up.

“Go back inside!” Chanyeol yelled over the storm.

“Not without you! You’re dumber than I thought coming out in this!” Jongin snapped as he tried to shield part of his face from the rain.

Suddenly there was a bright flash and the two were sent flying, but before they hit the ground the two were caught just barely by Luhan. He set them down gently as Sehun used his wind as a barrier against the rain.

“Whoops got a little too close there,” an unfamiliar voice giggled.

Sehun watched as a couple figures approached them slowly. The one who giggled wore a mischievous smile on his face as the other young man beside him wore a displeased expression.

“Jongdae I told you to be careful, I don’t want to hurt anyone,” the displeased man addressed the other.

“Oh come on Joonmyun you can’t blame me, lightening isn’t exactly something you can control so easily,” Jongdae whined jokingly before he pointed to the sky.

Another flash of lightening came down towards the group. They braced for the impact except for Baekhyun. He jumped up quickly, extending his hands out, focusing on the lightning bolt. Chanyeol opened his eyes just in time to see the bolt redirect to Baekhyun’s hands, sending the young man flying back. His heart dropped hearing his scream before he was out of sight.

“Baekhyun!” he yelled as he quickly abandoned the wind barrier in search of his friend.

“Wait!” he heard the others call to him, but he couldn’t stop. He had to make sure he was ok.

“Is this what you’re looking for?” Chanyeol turned to see Joonmyun behind him.

Above him was a water sphere with an unconscious Baekhyun within it.

“Put him down!” Chanyeol growled as his hand lit up with fire.

“Calm down tall and angry, I just want to talk,” the shorter man calmly answered.

Chanyeol relaxed his shoulders slightly, the flames at his hand calming down slightly as he decided to give him a minute to talk before unleashing his wrath.
