I hummed to myself happily, spreading jam on my toast. It was another bright morning in Incheon and the birds outside were singing
heartily. I smiled to myself and looked at the clock. I yawned and ate my breakfast on the sofa, stretching my legs out across its whole length.
I reached over to pick up my phone and text my younger brother who was supposed to arrive in Jeju that day. ‘Hey little bro! Are you safe
and well? Text me back when you arrive there, arasso?’ I walked over to the coat rack and pulled on my coat, taking the dog lead from
one of the pegs. “Yoshiko!” I called out my puppy’s name and heard him running eagerly toward me instantly.
My grey and white Maltese, who I bought from a dog breeder in Japan (hence the name), was always eager for walks. Honestly, it was nice

forget to charge it. Chung-Hee was like that; he’d forget all the small things but remember most of the important things.
However, he knew how much his noona would worry, so I had confidence that he’d remember eventually. I was walking past an
electronic store, which had several large televisions playing different channels. Before I knew it, all of them had switched to the same channel;
the news. I was going to keep walking when I caught sight of the news flash. ‘South Korean ferry Sewol has capsized on its journey to Jeju.’
A sharp sting of pain pierced my heart as I pulled out my phone again, realising that this was most likely the reason why he hadn’t text back.
If he was on there, either he was being evacuated or he was dead. I pulled gently on the lead and head back home with Yoshiko,
anxious to get home. I had to check. I had to see if he was one of the
