Chapter 1: New school

 

Narrator:

_____ is excited about her new school. It is 7:58 in the morning. (Mum) Mrs. Lee drove _____ to school. _____ quickly hopped out of the car and gave her mum a kiss.

 

‘Bye mum.’ _____ said

 

‘Bye, sweetie. Have a nice day!’ Mrs. Lee said

                                

‘Well, I think the bell is going to ring in any minute, I’m going to go now.’ _____ said

 

‘Okay, take care.’ _____’s mum said

 

_____’s POV

While I was walking, I saw lots of people chatting, they were staring at me like ‘Who is that chick?’ I opened the door and looked for the principal’s office; I sat down on the chair and waited for the principal. I saw a kid getting bullied, I felt sorry. Then a minute later, the principal arrived. He introduced himself and I introduced myself.

 

‘Hi, I am Mr. Chai. I am the principal, nice to meet you.’ The principal said

 

‘Hi. I am _____. Nice to meet you!’ I said ‘So, what class am I in?’

 

‘Oh! Sorry, I forgot. I’m just going to my office and check. I’ll be back in a minute.’ The principal said

 

I was waiting then suddenly a group of boys came in and sat down in front of me. I looked at this guy with the bright brown hair; he looked at me and smiled. I smiled back then I looked away. The principal came back and gave me a piece of paper which tells me what room I am in.

 

‘Here you go.’ Said the principal as he handed me the paper

 

‘Kamsa Hamnida.’ I said

 

‘Hey, just to make it easier for you. These boys can show you if they are in the same room as you.’ The principal said

 

‘Room 8. Is anyone in that group from room 8?’ I asked

 

‘Hm, I think Yesung and Leeteuk are. I’m not quite sure if I’m right. Are you Yesung, Leeteuk?’ The principal asked

 

‘Yep. You got it.’ Leeteuk said

 

‘What he said.’ Yesung said

 

‘Great. Can you guys show _____ room 8 then?’ The principal asked

 

‘Sure.’ Leeteuk said

 

‘Yeah. What he said.’ Yesung said

 

‘Good. You guys can go now. Have a nice day _____. I hope you’ll enjoy this school.’ The principal said

 

‘Come on, let’s go.’ Leeteuk said

 

I followed Yesung and Leeteuk, they were really quiet but then we started talking.

 

‘So welcome to Mandau. How are you?’ Leeteuk asked

 

‘Oh, I’m good.’ I said

 

‘We’re actually working on a research today, I think.’ Yesung said

 

‘Okay. Good.’ I said

 

‘Yeah, I’m going for an A.’ Leeteuk giggled

 

‘Good luck with that.’ Yesung said trying to make Leeteuk feel bad

 

‘We’re here! _____, is it? Well, you can sit anywhere you like.’ Yesung said

 

‘Okay, thanks.’ I said

 

There was only one seat left at the second front row and it is next to this boy. He’s cute, well he’s okay. I sat down the chair next to him and I introduced myself.

 

‘Hi, I’m _____. You are?’ I asked

 

‘Oh, hi. Sungmin, m- my name’s Sungmin. You new?’ The person said

 

‘Yes, I’m new. I don’t really like being a newbie and- Wait! I know you. Well, I’m not quite sure if you are that person. I just, I know you.’ I said

 

‘You do?’ Sungmin asked

 

‘Yeah, I think I saw you getting bullied. I think that was you. Who were bullying you?’ I asked

 

‘Um, well. This group. They’re really popular and rich. They like to bully me a lot. Yeah.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Oh, so. Who were they?’ I asked

 

‘Oh, Yesung and his friends, Leeteuk, Donghae, Eunhyuk... They bully me a lot. They’ve been doing it since I moved here.’ Sungmin

 

‘Did you just say, Yesung and his friends?’ I asked

 

‘Yeah. What about it? Um, anyway. Our class is actually working on a research today. I’m not quite sure but.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Yeah I know. Yesung told me. The guy that bullied you. He and Leeteuk showed me the way to this room.’ I said

 

‘Really? Wow. I can’t believe that they did that. I’ve never seen them being so nice to a newbie.’ Sungmin asked

 

‘They didn’t really do it. I mean, I was in the office then they came in. The principal said it would be easier if they show me the way to this room.’ I said

 

‘And they said okay? Fine? Did they?’ Sungmin asked

 

‘Yeah. They did.’ I said

 

Sungmin’s POV

Is she telling me the truth? Yesung and his friends are never like that to new people. Wow. Anyway, this girl _____... She’s nice. No one’s been like that to me before.

 

‘Well, here comes Mr. Jack. Our teacher.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Wow, he’s tall.’ _____ said

 

‘Uh-huh. Yes, he is.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Hello, I’m Mr. Jack and I think that we have a new student! Why don’t you stand up and introduce yourself?’ Mr. Jack said

 

I stood up and introduced myself.

 

‘Hi, _____ imnida. I studied in Australia. I’m fifteen and it’s really nice meeting you all.’ _____ said

 

‘What school did you go to before?’ Mr. Jack asked

 

‘Perth High. I studied in Australia.’ _____ said

 

‘Good. Anyway, you can sit down now.’ Mr. Jack said

 

I sat down, I looked around and everyone’s eyes were on me. I felt uncomfortable.

 

‘Now. We are doing a research today.’ Mr. Jack said

 

_____’s POV

Half of the class cheered, unbelievable. In my old school everyone would say ‘Argh! I’m not that smart.’ I am starting to like this school. It’s a lot better than my old school.

 

‘We are doing a research today about North Korea and you will need a partner. Now, can you please go and find yourself a partner. Yes, I forgot. It is due next Tuesday and please hand it to me on that day.’ Mr. Jack said

 

Everyone got out of their seats and looked for a partner. Damn. Who am I going with? I’m new! New people do not get along with people straight away. Well, I’ve been talking to Sungmin and all that. I should ask him.

 

‘Hi. Um, Sungmin. Would you like to be my partner?’ I asked

 

‘Sure! I- uh, I’d love to.’ Sungmin said with a smile on his face

 

‘So, any ideas?’ I asked

 

‘I can’t think with Yesung and his friends staring at us. It’s uncomfortable!’ Sungmin said

 

‘Why is he staring at us? Can’t he just mind his own business?’ I asked

 

‘Maybe he likes you. I’m unsure. Let’s just ignore him.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Sure. Wait, aren’t we going to use a computer? It’s a lot easier.’ I asked

 

‘Oh! Um, wait here. I’ll be back!’ Sungmin said

 

Sungmin left. I’m here sitting alone. Here comes Yesung. What’s up with him?

 

‘Hey.’ Yesung said

 

‘Um, hi.’ I said

 

‘So how are you so far?’ Yesung asked

 

‘I’ve been very good lately.’ I said

 

‘You made a new friend.’ Yesung said

 

‘Sungmin? Yeah, he’s sweet and kind.’ I said

 

‘I see. Well, he’s okay.’ Yesung said

 

‘Why are your friends pointing at us?’ I asked

 

‘They’re just joking around. Just ignore them.’ Yesung said

 

‘Oh, I remember. Why do you and your friends like to bully Sungmin? I mean, come on. He’s a nice and sweet guy!’ I said

 

‘Um, I don’t know. They think that he’s a geek.’ Yesung replied

 

‘For your information, he is very sweet, kind and friendly! You guys should stop bullying him.’ I said

 

Sungmin is back with a laptop; finally, maybe it’s his.

 

‘I’m back.’ Sungmin said

 

‘I have to go now. See yah!’ Yesung said

 

‘I knew it. He likes you!’ Sungmin said

 

‘He does not like me! He just came here and asked me something. So, is that yours?’ I asked

 

‘It’s for you.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Okay, why are you giving me a free laptop?’ I asked

 

‘Each student should have one.’ Sungmin said

 

‘You mean everyone in this school has one?’ I asked

 

‘Yeah.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Do I need to pay for it? I mean. I don’t have any money at all. I didn’t bring any. It wasn’t on the list.’ I said

 

‘Ha. You don’t need to pay for it. It’s free!’ Sungmin said as he smiled

 

‘Are you serious?’ I asked

 

‘Yes, I’m serious. Now, take it. I’m just going to get mine.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Sure. Take your time.’ I said

 

Wow, free laptop! In my old school, we only have five computers and we only get ten minutes of it. Here comes someone that I seriously do not know.

 

‘Hey.’ The person said

 

‘Hi, um. Sorry, do I know you?’ I asked

 

‘Sorry, my name is Eunhyuk. Yesung’s friend.’ The person said

 

‘Yes of course. What brought you here?’ I asked

 

‘Oh, nothing. It’s just that Yesung has been staring at you for like five minutes. Do you even know him?’ He asked

 

‘Kind of, he and Leeteuk showed me the way to this room.’ I said

 

‘Yes. Sweet, okay, I get it now. Here comes that geeky dude. I have to go now. Bye.’ He said

 

‘He is not a geek you-!’ I said

 

Sungmin is back and he is carrying his laptop with him. He gave Eunhyuk and curios face.

 

‘Why was Eunhyuk talking to you? Seriously, something is going on.’ Sungmin said

 

‘I have no clue! Okay, never leave me, this time if you leave me. I’m coming with you. I don’t want to talk with them. They are just creepy! Eunhyuk just called you a geek. I mean, you’re friendly and sweet.’ I said

 

‘Yeah? Thanks. Well, turn your laptop on and it will tell you your password.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Kamsa Hamnida.’ I said

 

I turned my laptop on, got the password. This school is sweet!

 

‘So, you got it?’ Sungmin asked

 

‘What? My password? Yeah. I’m on. Where do I go now?’ I asked

 

‘You press that purple cube and then you just type whatever you want on the box and it’ll show you something about it.’ Sungmin asked

 

‘Oh, okay. Just like Google.’ I said ‘So, this research is about North Korea. Well, do you know anything about it?’  

 

‘Yeah! Of course.’ He said

 

Yesung’s POV

Why is it that every time I see _____ talking with someone, I feel jealous?

 

‘Hey, Leeteuk? If- um. If you always see a girl talking to someone and you feel a little jealous. Does that mean you like her?

 

‘Ha, jealousy. Ne. Yes.’ Leeteuk replied

 

That means I’m jealous and I like her? No, can’t be happening! Why should I be interested in this newbie?!

 

_____’s POV

Everyone was there sitting on their chair, working hard. Never seen this before.

 

‘So, I have a question. Do you have any sisters or brothers?’ I asked Sungmin

 

‘Yeah! Glad you asked. I have a sister called Sunny. She’s 13 and I’m 15. At recess, I’ll introduce you to her.’ Sungmin said

 

‘What a cute name.’ I said

 

‘Yeah. Sunny.’ Sungmin said

 

Sungmin’s POV

_____ is so sweet. She asks about my life and she said that I’m friendly and sweet. No one has ever said that to me before. I’m glad that she moved here in Mandau.

 

‘Three more minutes and its recess.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Cool, I am so hungry right now.’ _____ said

 

‘Same.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Hey, I’m on this website about North Korea. There is lots of interesting facts. Here’s the link.’ _____ said

 

‘Kamsa Hamnida.’ Sungmin

 

Yesung, Leeteuk, Eunhyuk and Donghae are coming here. What?! What?! What for? Um, no. They might bully me. I can’t let them bully me in front of my new friend _____. Just calm down. Calm down. Here they come! Just act like you haven’t seen them.

 

‘Hey.’ Eunhyuk said

 

_____’s POV

Why are they here? They are supposed to be working on a research. Yesung’s friends? Are they here to bully Sungmin? Not happening this time.

 

‘What are you doing here?’ I asked

 

‘We’re trying to be nice and asking you to have lunch with us.’ Eunhyuk said

 

‘U, no. I’m having lunch with Sungmin. Sorry.’ I said

 

‘Yesung, Leeteuk, Donghae! Should we take the geek?’ Eunhyuk whispered

 

‘It’s cool.’ Yesung whispered back

 

‘What he said.’ Leeteuk and Donghae said

 

‘Um, what about this. You and your gee- I mean. You and Sungmin can have lunch with us! What about that?’ Eunhyuk asked

 

‘Sungmin. Do you want to?’ I asked him

 

‘Um, okay. Sure. Can my sister come?’ Sungmin asked

 

‘Um. Sure. Why not?’ Eunhyuk said

 

‘Let’s go.’ Leeteuk whispered

 

They’re leaving, finally! They were wasting time, oh look! It’s recess. Yes, wasted so much time. Anyway, I can’t wait to meet Sungmin’s sister.

 

(Bell rings)

 

‘Wow, what freaks.’ I said

 

‘You may all go now.’ Mr. Jack said

 

‘Haha. Yeah. I can’t believe that they asked you and me to have lunch with them! That is the first time. First time! First time that they ask some geek and a new person to have lunch with them!’ Sungmin said

 

‘Hey! Don’t call yourself a geek. You are not a geek! Anyway, what is so surprising about it?’ I asked

 

‘Hello? They are like the richest and most popular people anyone in this school knows. Anyway, let’s go. It’s recess.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Oh, yeah. Let’s go.’ I said

 

Sungmin’s POV

Wow! I can’t believe that Yesung’s group just asked me and _____ to have lunch with them. I can’t believe it. But- what if they bully me? Don’t worry! _____ is always with me. She’s been very nice, kind and friendly to me, I want to buy her something from the cafeteria.

 

‘Hey_____. Do you have anything for recess?’ Sungmin asked

 

‘Yeah, I have a biscuit.’ _____ said

 

‘Don’t worry about that! I wanna buy you something.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Awwww. Thanks but it is okay. Don’t worry. It’s cool!’ _____ said

 

‘No, I mean. You’ve been very kind and friendly to me. You deserve it.’ Sungmin said

 

‘But we might be late.’ _____ said

 

‘Late for what?’ Sungmin asked

 

‘Remember? You’re going to introduce your sister to me. By the way, where is she?’ I asked

 

‘She’s right there. With the blonde curly hair. That’s her carrying a pink wallet.’ Sungmin said as she waved to Sunny

 

‘Oh, she’s really pretty.’ _____ said

 

‘I know. She’s coming here.’ Sungmin

 

‘Cool.’ _____ said

 

I am so happy to have _____ as a friend. She’s been very kind and sweet, I am so happy. I’m so excited to introduce her to Sunny. I wonder what Sunny will say about her. She’s here!

 

‘Sunny! This is _____. _____ this is my sister Sunny.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Hi _____! I’m Sungmin’s sister. Nice to meet you!’ Sunny said

 

‘Wow, you’re really pretty. Um, sorry. Nice to meet you.’ _____ said

 

‘Here, let’s sit down.’ Sungmin said

 

I sat down next to _____ while Sunny sat in front of us. I am having a great time with them two!

 

‘So, when did you guys start?’ Sunny asked

 

‘Start what?’ _____ asked

 

‘You know. How long have you two been going out?’ Sunny asked

 

‘Wha- Sunny! _____ is my friend. I’m not- She is just a friend! She’s new and yeah.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Haha, totally what he said.’ _____ said

 

‘Oh, I’m sorry Oppa and _____. I didn’t know. Wow.’ Sunny said

 

‘You are very funny. Um, _____? I’m just going to get something, okay?’ Sungmin asked

 

‘Sure! I’ll wait here.’ _____ said

 

‘I’ll make sure she’s safe.’ Sunny said

 

‘Thanks, I’ll be back in a minute.’ Sungmin said

 

_____’s POV

Sungmin left to get something, anyway. Sunny is very funny and pretty! I want to get along with her. I think she is very kind and pretty.

 

‘So, do you have any friends?’ I asked

 

‘Yeah, her name is Sooyoung and she’s not here today.’ Sunny said

 

‘You do know that Sungmin always gets bullied by Yesung and his friends, right?’ I asked

 

‘Yeah. I know that! No one really bullies me. Once actually, this girl bullied me and I just ignored her. She doesn’t go to this school anymore.’ Sunny said

 

‘I feel really sorry for Sungmin. Oh, he’s back.’ I said

 

Sungmin’s back and he’s carrying three milkshakes. Wow, what a sweet guy!

 

‘Hello and I am back with three milkshakes. Here is yours Sunny. Here’s yours _____ and the last one for me.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Thanks. You are so sweet.’ I said

 

‘Kamsa hamnida.’ Sunny said

 

We were talking, we were all happy then suddenly Yesung and his friends came and sat down with us. Every time I am having a great time, they always come.

 

‘What do you want?’ I asked them

 

‘Oh, nothing. We’re just tired that’s all.’ Donghae said

 

‘Go sit somewhere else please.’ I said

 

‘I agree! Go sit somewhere else.’ Sunny said

 

‘Shut up.’ Eunhyuk said

 

‘How dare you talk to my sister like that?’ Sungmin said as she stood up

 

‘Haha.’ Leeteuk laughed

 

‘Stop laughing!’ Donghae said

 

‘You guys, just leave us alone. Okay? What do you want from us?’ I said

 

‘You guys. You heard _____, let’s go.’ Yesung said

 

‘Thanks.’ I said to him

 

‘You’re welcome.’ He said

 

Sunny is crying. Aw, I hope she’s okay. Why do they have to keep showing up and ruin everything?!

 

‘Are you alright, Sunny?’ Sungmin asked as he put his arms around her

 

‘I just don’t like the fact that they’re always like that! They think that they’re so- You know.’ Sunny said

 

‘I know. I hate that! Wait, Sungmin. Remember? We’re going to have lunch with them and Sunny is coming.’ I said

 

‘WHAT?! I am not having lunch with those- T- those freaks!’ Sunny said

 

‘It’s okay. We’ll cancel it.’ Sungmin said as he sighed

 

‘No, you’ve always wanted to have lunch with them Sungmin, I think. We will have lunch with them and if they bully us or anything, we go and look for another table.’ I said

 

‘I think that’s a good idea.’ Sunny said

 

‘Yeah, thanks _____. Really!’ Sungmin said

 

(Bell rings)

 

Narrator:

The bell rang, Sunny walked straight to her class. _____ and Sungmin walked straight to room 8. Sungmin sat down while _____ talked to Yesung.

 

‘Hey.’ _____ said

 

‘Hey.’ Yesung said

 

‘Look, me, Sungmin and Sunny are going to have lunch with you guys, right?’ _____ asked

 

‘Yeah, sure.’ Yesung said

 

‘Well, we don’t want you to bully is or anything. Just normal lunch, normal talk and no bullying.’ _____ said

 

‘Sure, anything for you.’ Yesung said as he winked

 

‘Ugh. Never do that.’ _____ said as she sat down

 

‘Did you tell him?’ Sungmin asked

 

‘Yeah, he said ‘Anything for you.’ Then he winked. What a freak!’ _____ said

 

‘He likes you. Trust me.’ Sungmin said

 

 

_____’s POV

Okay, I was lying. He’s not a freak and I didn’t mean to say ‘Ugh.’ I kind of like him. I think he’s cute and okay. When he winked at me I nearly fainted but if I did, he would definitely know that I like him. Does he like me? Oh! Okay, I am not that crazy about him. He’s okay- Fine. He’s fine!

 

‘Sungmin, what do we have now?’ I asked him

 

‘Maths.’ He replied

 

‘Cool.’ I said

 

Mr. Jack came in and told everyone to go to room 2 and grab their stuff.

 

‘What are we doing? Where are we going?’ I asked

 

‘Maths. They probably moved the room to another room.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Okay.’ I said

 

Everyone got their stuff and walked straight to room 2. There was a lady with blonde hair in front of room 2’s door and she introduced herself.

 

‘Hello, I am Mrs. Kyu and I am your new Math’s teacher. Come on in and sit wherever you want.’ Mrs. Kyu

 

‘Hey, Sungmin. Sit next to me!’ I said

 

‘Sure.’ Sungmin said

 

Narrator:

Everyone came in and sat down. _____ and Sungmin sat at the front row next to each other. Yesung and his friends were on the very back. Mrs. Kyu gave everyone a piece of paper and told them to write their name on it. Everyone wrote their names on it, after that Mrs. Kyu collected them and put them in a box.

 

‘Now. I will call out a name and I will pick a piece of paper for you and whoever’s name is on the paper is going to be your partner.’ Mrs. Kyu said

 

Sungmin’s POV

Damn! I hate this. What if I get paired up with someone in Yesung’s group?! Oh no.

 

‘What if I get paired up with one of Yesung’s friend, _____?’ Sungmin whispered

 

‘Oh no. Um, just ignore whoever’s the person you’re paired up with, just like Sunny. She did that.’ _____ whispered back

Narrator:

Mrs. Kyu called out Yesung’s name. _____ was looking worried; she didn’t want to end up getting paired up with him. _____ closed her eyes.

 

‘Sungmin? Sungmin. You are with Yesung.’ Mrs. Kyu said

 

‘No.’ Sungmin whispered

 

‘Ha.’ Yesung quietly

 

‘Okay, um. Donghae. You are with Minho.’ Mrs. Kyu said

 

‘Eh, he’s okay.’ Donghae said

 

‘Let’s see. Eunhyuk. You are with _____.’ Mrs. Kyu said

 

‘No, no! This dude?’ _____ said

 

‘Haha.’ Eunhyuk laughed

 

‘Leeteuk, you are with Jessica.’ Mrs. Kyu said

 

‘I’m with a girl? Oh damn.’ Leeteuk said

 

When Mrs. Kyu finished she told everyone to sit next to their partner. Sungmin was not feeling well at all. _____ was feeling uncomfortable.

 

‘Hey, you okay?’ Yesung asked Sungmin

 

‘What? Me? Yeah. I guess, I just don’t get along with- I’m okay.’ Sungmin said

 

‘You look really worried. What’s wrong?’ Yesung asked

 

‘I’m just not comfortable.’ Sungmin said

 

‘Uh-huh.’ Yesung said

 

‘So, do you have- Never mind. No, um. Do you have any feelings for ____? I’m just asking...’ Sungmin asked

 

‘She’s okay. I think she’s kind of pretty. So, you guys are friends and all that.’ Yesung said

 

‘Yeah, she’s been very nice to me lately.’ Sungmin said

 

‘I can definitely see that.’ Yesung said

 

When everyone was with their partner, Mrs. Kyu told them what they are going to do.

 

‘Okay, it’s just simple. You and your partner will share this sheet full of problems and you will have to answer them all. You only have ten minutes to do it. Here you go.’ Mrs. Kyu said as she handed out the sheets

 

_____’s POV

He sat next to me so close, I moved.

 

‘Now, I have to share a math sheet with him and answer all these questions? And ten minutes with him?’ I thought

 

‘Hey. What’s up?’ He asked

 

‘*Sighs I’m good. Now, less talking and more working.’ I said

 

‘Okay. Whatever you say, ma’am.’ Eunhyuk said

 

‘Don’t, ma’am me. Just help me do this!’ I said

 

‘Fine, fine. Chill. I’ll help you, okay.’ Eunhyuk said

 

‘Good, thanks. Now, what’s the answer for this?’ I asked him as I pointed to the question

 

‘Hm, forty-eight plus thirty-eight? Um, wait.’ Eunhyuk said looking confused

 

‘Ah...’ I said

 

‘I GOT IT! It’s 85. Now, what are you going to say about that?’ Eunhyuk asked

 

‘It’s wrong. It’s 86 you fool. Now, write the answer down under the question.’ I told him

 

‘Whatever.’ Eunhyuk said

 

I looked at Sungmin, I hope he’s alright. I wish that everything is going fine.

 

Sungmin’s POV

Wow, Yesung changed. He’s different, he changed. He’s acting so nice! Now, I’m not scared of him or his friends. I can’t wait to have lunch with him and his friends! I have one question and I really want to know the answer. Why did he change and why is he acting so nice to me and _____? Hm...
