The message ringtone of his phone echoed in his bedroom while Hyesung was doing one of his morning routines, fixing his precious
hair. He glanced around the room to find the whereabouts of the now-quiet device and saw it lying on his bed cover. Dragging his
legs to the bed, he picked up the phone and a smile appeared on his face immediately.
It was Minwoo …
“Hey!!! Don’t forget about this evening! ^_^ and Morning!”
It was that entire message saying. Just Minwoo reminding him about this evening event.
Yes. This evening event …
Their High School Reunion … after all those years …
Just by the thought of it flashing on his mind, Hyesung found himself smiling widely again with his heartbeats becoming a little
faster.
He had been waiting for it since he knew about it from Minwoo last month. He had never been a sociable type, like Minwoo, since
his high school days. Well, he was not the one until now. However, he loved the idea of meeting his old friends and classmates again
after these 17 years. He was curious enough to know how they had been doing and how much they had changed.
He lost most of the contacts when he moved to Seoul for his university education and the only one left was Dongwan, his only best
friend since middle school and later, he had bumped into Minwoo in a restaurant a year ago. Since then, the three of them became
closer than before.
Actually, Minwoo was not his close friend in high school. They were just classmates and due to their different interests, they had
not had the chance to be close. But, being a social butterfly and having an easy-going personality, Minwoo had known the entire
class and Shin Hye Sung had not been the exception. That was why when he had seen the latter in that restaurant, he had
recognized him immediately and been the first one to go over to greet, the first step to being close buddies in a year.
When Minwoo had brought the topic of reunion on the table, Hye Sung had been simply excited and encouraged him to make that
happen. Without losing his social skills even till now, Minwoo managed to gather most of their classmates in a mere single month and
then, here was the highly anticipated reunion for Hye Sung in this evening.
After replying a short “Yes” and “Morning” to Minwoo, Hye Sung picked up his bag and car keys before wearing his shoes and exiting
his apartment. Working as a Lecturer at a university did not make him a rich guy but it still helped him to be able to list a decent
apartment and a domestic car under his possessions. Originally, he rarely spent money and it was not because he was stingy but
because he was not interested in any money-costing activity. That was why he was still being able to survive comfortably in this big
city, Seoul.
After greeting colleagues and greeting back to some students on his way from the parking lot of Hankyung University to History
Department, finally he got to his table and started preparing for another day at work. Thankfully, he had only two lectures to give
today and done all the preparations since last night so for now, he could relax and spend his time imagining the scenario of the
coming event.
Oh… How he wished that the evening would come fast …
Eric stopped tapping on his laptop keyboard when he heard the knocking on his office door. After his “Come in”, Ms.Han, his
secretary, came in wearing her usual polite yet business-like smile.
“Mr.Mun … It’s lunch time … So … if there’s something you want to have …”
Ah? It’s already lunch time?
He glanced at his watch and saw its shorter hand pointing at 12. He must have been really immersed in work not to be able to notice
hours flowing fast.
He glanced back at his secretary who was standing near the door and still waiting for his answer.
“It’s ok, Ms.Han … I’ll just go out for lunch … I also want to see this surrounding … Thanks for asking me … and go and enjoy your
lunch …”
He nodded with a faint smile after his words and his secretary went out obediently, giving a light bow to him.
Well, this may be the perfect day for studying the neighborhood of his office building. Since he had been promoted as the head of
Korean Branch and come back to his mother land from America, he had been too busy to deal with his new colleagues and to catch
up with ongoing projects of this branch. The whole past week had been full with meeting after meeting and he had spent his lunch
time in his office with just fast-food. That was why he decided to go out for lunch today since the hectic part of taking over the
new position had already been over.
He went out of their office building which was a three-storied building in a quiet yet classy neighborhood after grabbing his hand
phone, jacket and wallet. He just left his car keys because he wanted to stroll around and find a good place for a decent lunch.
Eric noticed that there were many office buildings like theirs in this neighborhood and among them, some cafes and boutiques could
be seen with their own unique vibes. Then, a sight of one boutique through the glass window caught his eyes while passing it. It
had a great decoration and based on the styles of clothes being displayed, Eric thought the owner must have a good taste in fashion
and styling. Suddenly, he had an urge to check it out and a few more minutes to his lunch time would not do any harm, he thought.
As soon as he entered the shop, the melodious sound of the piano playing welcomed him and a few seconds later, a short yet
handsome guy appeared from behind of the counter.
He must be the owner, Eric thought. According to his casual yet stylish outfit. And at the same time, weirdly, he reminded Eric of
someone he knew but he could not recall who.
“Welcome. Can I help you?”
After those words, that seemingly owner of the boutique stared at Eric and due to his sudden stare, Eric got a little bit annoyed and
avoided his stare giving a look at the nearest items displayed.
“Sorry … But … Mun Jung Hyuk?”
Eric startled at hearing his Korean name and immediately turned his head back to the direction of the voice. He rarely used his
Korean name in these days and mostly went with his American name, Eric, since he had got to U.S. So, the ones who knew his
Korean name were only his family, close friends and … well … the ones who had known him before he had left Korea.
“Yeah … I’m Mun Jung Hyuk … You know me?”
“Wow! It’s really you … How many years had it been now? 17 or 18? Anyway … I’m Minwoo … Remember me? Lee Minwoo … From Class
A …”
The owner’s enthusiastic greeting with his now disappearing eyes due to his wide smile knocked the old memory back into Eric’s
head.
Ah…. That was why he had been feeling he reminded him of someone he knew …
Lee Minwoo … the cool guy … in his high school …
“Oh … Minwoo … Sorry for not recognizing you …. It had been so long since I left … Wow! It’s really nice to meet with you again
…dude …”
Eric stretched his hand for handshake but instead of it, a hug came from the short guy and he could not help but just hugged
Minwoo back.
“I heard you went to America and thought you just settled down there … didn’t expect to see you here again …”
Minwoo still could not brush away his amazement from seeing Eric until he invited him to take a seat.
“Actually …. I’ve just got back here a week ago … since I got a promotion at Korean branch … but my family’s still there … So … at the
moment … I’m living here alone …”
“You already got married?”
He was taken aback of Minwoo’s blunt question but remembering that guy’s open personality, he just shook his head with a little
laugh.
“No … I’m still single … I mean … my parents and my elder sister’s family are still in U.S …”
“Oh … I see … Well … same here … I’m still single … and free … Hahaha …”
Minwoo’s heartily laugh made him also laugh and that really felt good like he had been back to his teenage days.
“But … You know what … Jung Hyuk-ah … We met at just right time … because there’s a reunion of our class this evening …”
“This evening?”
“Yeah … since you’re back here … you must join us … without fail … You ok? I believe everyone will be happy to see you again …”
Eric smiled widely and nodded at his old friend saying “Of course”.
Reunion? It sounded fun …
The evening Hye Sung had been waiting for finally came and after dropping by at his own home to take a quick shower and change
into more casual clothes, now he was in his car on the way heading to the jazz club where the reunion was going to be held.
He had to go there alone since Dongwan had an urgent business trip arranged by his company and had to cancel to take part in the
event at last minute. Both of them got furious after hearing the news, especially Hye Sung. However, Dongwan had succeeded in
making his friend calm again by promising him to treat a dinner at his favorite restaurant when he came back.
When he arrived at the location, only a few were already there and they immediately got along with one another, recalling their high
school memories while drinking wines and having snacks. Hye Sung was later joined by the “host” Minwoo and after whining about
Dongwan’s absence to Minwoo, the shorter one left him with other old friends to enjoy the time.
More and more classmates were arriving and after an hour, Hye Sung was having a great time chatting with old friends and laughing
like an 18-year old student forgetting his current position as a lecturer. He had been timid and introverted in his school days but as
he was getting older, Hye Sung wanted to have fun more and go back to his carefree teenage days.
When he was being carried away in a chat with a friend from a publishing company, he had a glance Minwoo coming to his direction
tugged along by a tall and handsome guy behind him. Seeing the stranger, he suddenly had a heavy feeling in his chest without
knowing the reason. Maybe he had drunk too much already?
But, keeping his gaze at that stranger, the feeling was getting heavier and heavier.
His tall and muscular figure …
His a little dark skin …
His charismatic and confident gaze …
Out of all, his smirk …
Summing up all those facts, an answer dawned upon the lecturer’s mind and he shook his head unconsciously.
It can’t be …
Please …
Then, while he was getting frozen with his own thoughts, without him realizing, Minwoo and that stranger approached the table he
was sitting at.
“Nice … Shin Hye Sung … It had been too late to run now …”
Minwoo’s voice entered his ears and his words just made his worst nightmare true …
“Hye Sung-ah … Do you remember Jung Hyuk … Mun Jung Hyuk … from our class?”
“Of course … I remember … Stupid Minwoo …”
He cursed at his innocent friend in his mind without answering back. At that time, the stranger kept staring at him and at last, a
smirk that Hye Sung had been so used to appeared on his face gradually.
“Oh … … I hate that smirk …”
Being the ignorant person, Minwoo did not notice Hye Sung’s strange silence and he turned his head towards that “stranger”.
“Jung Hyuk-ah … You know Hye Sung? Shin Hye Sung? He’s from our class, too …”
“Of course … I know him …”
That devil’s words made Hye Sung breathe deeply and bite his inner cheeks not to let out his frustration. But, the next words
coming from him totally crushed Hye Sung’s perfect reunion evening.
“Long time no see … Sesame …"
