Rocketing Away

It turns out that there will be no travelling, not anymore. I want to keep it that way. Travelling was ‘our’ thing.

She doesn’t know why but she supposes that she is now somehow close friends with the girl that he is currently seeing. Considering that their social circle of friends frequently mingled and socialised, it is no surprise to her when she found out that some of her older unnies had taken a bit of a liking to Park Shinhye.

Park Shinhye, the girl who is pretty. Park Shinhye, the girl who is tall. Park Shinhye, the girl who is kind. Park Shinhye, the girl who is generous. Park Shinhye, the girl who can unknowingly charm a lot of people, including her unnies and for a moment, herself as well. Park Shinhye, the girl who might have a shot in the showbiz when it came to acting and therefore more successful than her when it comes to careers. Park Shinhye, the girl who he cannot stop being around because she just happened to be every guy’s dream. Park Shinhye, the girl who she has unconscious slight hatred feelings towards because everyone seemed to like her because she was just being herself.

Because of this, Seohyun tends to generally avoid Park Shinhye without trying to seem rude. Her unnies, especially Tiffany unnie, can see what she is doing and only wears an amused look on her face whenever Shinhye tries to  include Seohyun in whatever activity it is but Seohyun always finds it in her somewhere to refuse and blurts out the lame excuse, “I’m busy that day.” She has used that excuse so many times that she is sure that Shinhye knows that it isn’t an excuse anymore.

So they are acquaintances but they are never really that close with one another. Both are closer to other individuals within their social group. So Seohyun is very shocked when she opens her door one night and sees a sobbing Shinhye on her doorstep, looking as if she has just been walking through the rain before she got here. Even though Seohyun does feel somewhat resentful towards the pretty wanna-be actress, she does have a heart and compassion is her virtue as it is her weakness. There is something utterly… poor and sympathetic about Shinhye that makes Seohyun want to embrace her no matter how close they are and how awkward their actual relationship is.

With tears ruining her porcelain face, the drenched girl accepts a warm blanket and some tea from the young painter. Instantly she feels warmth spread through her from being in this apartment. There is something about the painter and her apartment that spreads warmth to others unlike anything else anyone encountered.

In a gentle voice Seohyun asks the question that has been bugging her since the girl turned up on her doorstep, “What seems to be the matter?”

Still shaking from the rain outside, Shinhye acts like a dignified actress and takes a slow sip from her tea. She doesn’t answer for a moment and doesn’t say anything. Resting the cup in her lap, she stays silent, staring off into space. Seohyun patiently waits for an answer even though she isn’t quite sure if she wants to know what the other girl’s problem might be.

“Yonghwa oppa and I…” Shinhye starts off awkwardly. Seohyun, who normally shouldn’t care about these type of things, finds herself hanging onto every word that the girl has to say. “It was never really meant to be,” she finishes gently.

Despite the fact that the poor girl comes to her house, someone who isn’t even remotely close to, and confesses of her break-up, the painter who only painted as her heart desires cannot find it in herself to be somewhat sympathetic for her. Despite the fact that the poor girl comes to her house with tears streaming down her face and her clothes drenched, Seohyun still cannot find it in her to be somewhat sad for her. Despite the fact that she is supposed to be sad and under normal circumstances she knew that deep down she would be sad, she isn’t. In fact, Seohyun feels lighter and freer. In a long time, she smiles a true smile.

Three sharp knocks on the door take her attention towards it as she glances up from the drama that she is watching. Shinhye is already asleep in the guest room after talking about how she thought their relationship was going fine and that nothing could possibly go wrong. Grudgingly, she gets up from her comfortable position on the couch and stands up and heads towards the door. She takes a quick glance at the clock, noting the late hour. Who could be visiting her at midnight?

She opens the door gently and is surprised, like earlier this evening, to see him on her doorstep. She sees his facial expressions and she just knows what he is going to say.

And in the end all we needed to be was a bit older, a bit wiser and a bit more mature so that we could travel again without falling.

Plot: Well, there is not much dynamic to the plot –which is fine on one hand, because this genre of fanfiction might not lean heavily on plot. But on the other hand, it might not benefit you that much in this semi-contest, because there are some other slice-of-life with more memorable concept or storyline.

Nonetheless, what I think is very good from your entry is that everything seems to be realistic enough –this is an element that other authors seem to forget in writing this kind of fanfiction. The flow is also commendable –sometimes a bit too slow, but actually, there's justification for that pace, so I don't think it's disadvantageous for the story.

There are some of unexplainable things, though, mostly on the real reason behind Yongseo's breakup. Yes, there are differences, and 'changed things' and some other implications, but I don't feel like the reason is sufficient to have a couple break up for more than 3 years or so. The reasons are there and implied, but not exactly clear. While this may be a preferential approach, to me, the lack of real breakup reason makes me feel like what's all the angst is all about then? Shinhye's breakup with Yonghwa is also not that elaborated.

I must say I love the ending though. I love the hints and the subtlety about it –it kind of makes it more romantic that way –and at the same time, realistic too.

Character: You got a high score here thanks to Seohyun. I absolutely love how dimensional you make her –especially with the flaw and the very humane emotion she thought when Shinhye came to her house. I loved how she was jealous and it added up to a nasty trait in her –but that does not make me hate Seohyun. In fact, I appreciate her way more that way. I thought that Seohyun would be quite typical, but her realistic actions, feelings, and thoughts really make me attracted to her characterization.

Yonghwa, however, as a main lead, is kind overshadowed by Seohyun. I understand that maybe this is because this story takes Seohyun's perspective more (despite it being a 3rd POV story), but on the other hand, that can't be a justification, because Yonghwa is kind of a main character here too. I like the minor part about him when we got to know his perception on drinking booze and all though. I think you should add those subtle scenes more –which would make the readers unknowingly got to know your characters more. I won't comment much on Shinhye, because while she suffers from a similar weakness that Yonghwa's character has, I think the main priority should still be Yonghwa first at this rate.

Style: I like it. There's a sufficient amount of contemplation that I enjoy in the stylistic of the writing. I like how the tone of the writing also subtly change when the characters call for more anguish –the writing style gets to be a bit cynical and I think it's fitting. I also like how you keep the style true to the realistic approach of your plot. The lack of metaphors are fitting –and even without the figure of speeches or languages, the writing style is still quite enjoyable. There are times when it feels a bit draggy or slightly boring, but that's not major and overall, I still manage to enjoy your stylistic in this fanfiction.

Suggestion:
• You might want to add certain scenes that would make everything a bit less bland. I do believe that realism still can be achieved that way. Maybe scenes when they were dating, or others.
• Shinhye is not exactly elaborated –aside from the fact that she was Yonghwa's girlfriend after Seohyun. I think you could have added more dimensions to her, even she was 'only' a supporting character. The same thing goes to Yonghwa.

Favorite Parts:
• It's a realistic fanfiction, I really commend it for that.
• Seohyun's bad traits. I really love how her flaw makes her so human as a character.
• I also like those brief sentences you put as scene separator. I think they are lovely and meaningful ^^
