Rocketing Away

Description

Him and I - we believed.

We believed that we could soar above the skies. We believed we could reach for the stars. We really believed that if we tried, we could travel to places that others could only dream of going. Travelling became ‘our’ thing. However, slowly yet gradually, our travels stopped. Because everyone knows that while we can go wherever we want, there will be a time when we are forced to return to our original starting point.

Plot: Well, there is not much dynamic to the plot –which is fine on one hand, because this genre of fanfiction might not lean heavily on plot. But on the other hand, it might not benefit you that much in this semi-contest, because there are some other slice-of-life with more memorable concept or storyline.

Nonetheless, what I think is very good from your entry is that everything seems to be realistic enough –this is an element that other authors seem to forget in writing this kind of fanfiction. The flow is also commendable –sometimes a bit too slow, but actually, there's justification for that pace, so I don't think it's disadvantageous for the story.

There are some of unexplainable things, though, mostly on the real reason behind Yongseo's breakup. Yes, there are differences, and 'changed things' and some other implications, but I don't feel like the reason is sufficient to have a couple break up for more than 3 years or so. The reasons are there and implied, but not exactly clear. While this may be a preferential approach, to me, the lack of real breakup reason makes me feel like what's all the angst is all about then? Shinhye's breakup with Yonghwa is also not that elaborated.

I must say I love the ending though. I love the hints and the subtlety about it –it kind of makes it more romantic that way –and at the same time, realistic too.

Character: You got a high score here thanks to Seohyun. I absolutely love how dimensional you make her –especially with the flaw and the very humane emotion she thought when Shinhye came to her house. I loved how she was jealous and it added up to a nasty trait in her –but that does not make me hate Seohyun. In fact, I appreciate her way more that way. I thought that Seohyun would be quite typical, but her realistic actions, feelings, and thoughts really make me attracted to her characterization.

Yonghwa, however, as a main lead, is kind overshadowed by Seohyun. I understand that maybe this is because this story takes Seohyun's perspective more (despite it being a 3rd POV story), but on the other hand, that can't be a justification, because Yonghwa is kind of a main character here too. I like the minor part about him when we got to know his perception on drinking booze and all though. I think you should add those subtle scenes more –which would make the readers unknowingly got to know your characters more. I won't comment much on Shinhye, because while she suffers from a similar weakness that Yonghwa's character has, I think the main priority should still be Yonghwa first at this rate.

Style: I like it. There's a sufficient amount of contemplation that I enjoy in the stylistic of the writing. I like how the tone of the writing also subtly change when the characters call for more anguish –the writing style gets to be a bit cynical and I think it's fitting. I also like how you keep the style true to the realistic approach of your plot. The lack of metaphors are fitting –and even without the figure of speeches or languages, the writing style is still quite enjoyable. There are times when it feels a bit draggy or slightly boring, but that's not major and overall, I still manage to enjoy your stylistic in this fanfiction.

Suggestion:
• You might want to add certain scenes that would make everything a bit less bland. I do believe that realism still can be achieved that way. Maybe scenes when they were dating, or others.
• Shinhye is not exactly elaborated –aside from the fact that she was Yonghwa's girlfriend after Seohyun. I think you could have added more dimensions to her, even she was 'only' a supporting character. The same thing goes to Yonghwa.

Favorite Parts:
• It's a realistic fanfiction, I really commend it for that.
• Seohyun's bad traits. I really love how her flaw makes her so human as a character.
• I also like those brief sentences you put as scene separator. I think they are lovely and meaningful ^^
